MIYC Christmas Boat Parade Christmas Boat Parade Big Success and MIYC Opens its Doors to the Community A Poem by Henry Stanley
Twas but weeks before Christmas and all through the town, people were saddened when the parade was turned down. But up sprang Peggy and Pete with a plan all their own, and all Marco rejoiced that their parade had not flown. And we knew in a moment it must be Grand Pelican -- backed by Angela and Jon and their can-do Club clan! We whistled and shouted and call'd them by name: “ Now Princess, now Bodacious, Lady B & James Blonde 001 for you! Now R. Wellington, Grand Pelican..and Fire Rescue and Police units, too!" To the Marco River we go! Down..round..and past Isles of Capri. Now parade away, cruise away; a hearty Ho-Ho-Ho to you..& to me!
Parade organizers, Peggy & Pete Frazier aboard their beautifully decorated Grand Pelican
Our own Pete & Peggy Frazier organized the Marco Island Christmas Boat Parade when the official one was cancelled. The City was supportive of the Frazier's plan to follow a modified parade route, which avoided waterways deemed to be potentially hazardous in the aftermath of Irma. On Saturday evening , December 9th, Peggy and Pete, long-time participants in the annual boat parade with their trawler Grand Pelican, rounded up and organized all the participating boats near the Club. Approximately 10 vessels participated, from the massive Marco Island Princess captained by Cedric Davis, down to open pontoon boats whose crews were fully exposed to the elements on the raw evening. But true to Frazier form, the rain and wind ceased, the skies cleared, and the waves calmed down just in time for the event. The festively decorated boats gathered at the Jolley Bridge at 6 p.m. The Marco Princess led the parade as it passed by the Marco Island Yacht Club, proceeded west past Factory Bay, past Pier 81, and then on past the Snook Inn to Hideaway Beach. The boats then crossed over to the Isles of Capri side and returned to the Yacht Club at 7:30 p.m. Also among the participating boats were the Marco Princess, Bodacious, skippered by Billy Glenda; Lady B, James Blonde 001; R. Wellington, Rich Granville; and Grand Pelican. The Marco Island Fire-Rescue boat
and the MIPD marine unit also participated in the parade. Santa Claus (AKA Jon Holt) rode aboard Grand Pelican and gave a hearty “Ho-Ho-Ho” to the hundreds of spectators waiting on the docks and waterside balconies along the route. Returning to the Yacht Club , Santa went ashore, greeting the over 220 members and guests from the community that had assembled to dine and view the parade. During the evening, the Club held a raffle to win a three-month Yacht Club trial membership, raising $3,200 in proceeds and contributions to the Marco Patriots for the continuation of their excellent service to Marco neighbors and the less fortunate in our area still recovering from Hurricane Irma. To organize the parade watching and in-club activities, Angela Holt assembled a large committee to plan and manage security, parking, guest dining, entertainment, etc., -- not to mention the charity raffle and contribution program. The Club's Staff -- Chef Bob, Pam and their capable assistants -- did an extraordinary job helping make the evening fun and successful. With over 100 guests from the community experiencing our Club's ambiance, friendliness & hospitality, it was not only a great parade and Club evening, it was a tremendous outreach and PR success for the Marco Island Yacht Club.

‘check in’ during the month of January. We have an attractive offer to help Social Members step up to Full Membership. The offer will only be available for the month of January; so if you are thinking about stepping up, don’t hesitate to let us know! The calendar is also full with special dining programs throughout the coming months. Your Member Events Committee has been doing absolutely outstanding work to plan and execute these events. The comments I hear from Members attending these events continue to be excellent! Make sure you check the calendar on the Web Site often. It continues to be updated as more activity plans are finalized! And, we will be holding the ‘official’ grand opening of the Burgee Bar in January. If you have not seen the completed project, take advantage of the opening to do so. It is truly an amazing transformation! We will also be opening the Burgee Bar for lunch starting in January. And, as we did last year, entertainment will be provided each Saturday. All in all, the upcoming season is set up to be one of the best in recent memory! The Calendar is full! Chef Bob is creating more variety on the menu! The Burgee Bar is ‘THE’ place to be on Friday’s! The planned boating activities are better than ever! And, we are looking forward Chairman’s Report

included the Club in their family holiday activities this year! Christmas Eve this year was special as Santa made a ‘last minute’ visit to the Club. I think he wanted to make sure he had all the ‘wish lists’ in mind from the children (and a few adults) who were sharing a wonderful holiday meal on Christmas Eve. Santa was also in attendance for a number of events at the Club this season, including the Member’s Holiday Party, the Boat Parade, and the get together after the street parade! Santa did tell me that his traditional suit is a little warm for Christmas in Marco. He suggested he might be looking for a ‘tropical version’ before next Christmas rolls around! With Christmas in the rear view mirror, we are looking forward to a very busy ‘Season’ at the Club. There are a number of boating events planned – both Day and Extended Cruises. And, we have our monthly Sunset Cruises back in full swing. Be sure you sign up for these events. You don’t need a boat to participate. I know most of our boating Members enjoy sharing the ‘on water’ experience with others. And if you are a Social member and ready to step up to Full Membership to take advantage of the ‘on water’ activities and full reciprocity with other clubs, be sure to

Commodore
Dick was a relatively new member when Diana asked him to be Commodore. I never quite understood that process; but they’re sticking to that story. So, fast forward 2 ½ years when Dick and Sharon invited Diana and me to join them on Miss Penny to boat to Naples for a Saturday Brunch. Along the way, Dick reminded me of that conversation with Diana,
Effective January 1, 2018, I have the honor to serve as your Commodore for the next twelve months. This is the culmination of a three-year commitment to serve on the Bridge and Board of Directors. My first order of business is to personally invite you to the January 20, 2018 Commodore’s Ball hosted by Past Commodore Lois Dixon and myself, supported by spouses Ed and Diana, and the Member Events Committee chaired Angela Holt. Past Commodores Dick Irwin and Randy Harris transferred the awards ceremony from the Ball to January Boater’s Night to allow more time for dancing; Lois and I will continue that change. Our entertainment this year is the Club’s favorite entertainer Wendy Renee, who now has a band to compliment the show. Diana and I have been MIYC members for 10 years, and Diana served on the Board of Directors (including Treasurer) for the 3 ½ years prior to my term. I was Chair of the Building and Grounds Committee during her tenure on the Board. At this moment Diana and I don’t own a boat, although that could change, based on encouragement from Ray Rosenberg. Come to think about it, during the 51 years of marriage to Diana, we have never owned a boat!!! I felt more confident in the air as a pilot, than on the Sea. So, you might ask how did I become a candidate the Commodore without a boat? The path began when Dick Irwin was Commodore. It was his responsibility, in consultation with other Bridge members, to select a Rear Commodore who would advance to Vice Commodore in the 2 nd year, then to Commodore in the 3 rd year. The Commodore will also serve on the Board of Directors during that 3-year term.
Bob Winterhalter Commodore
and popped the R.C. question. The water looked deep and Dick can be forceful, so I immediately accepted my appointment. The rest is history with the past two years on the Bridge being a great ride; the Board of Directors proved more challenging. Fortunately, Dave Everitt became Chairman and has led us from the abyss to a sustainable Club, with broad board support-- most of the time. Lois described –in last month’s Anchor Lines, some changes to the Bridge with the addition of a Boating Committee. It will assist the Bridge in longer term planning. Best of all, you don’t have to buy a white uniform to participate on the Boating Committee! Its structure will be more fully described at the January 10, 2018 Boater’s Night. See you there! Happy New Year to all! Bob Winterhalter Commodore [email protected]

Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef
Ahoy members of MIYC! I would like to extend a special thanks to all who shared the Club with family and friends throughout these magical holidays. Also, on behalf of the entire staff, I would like to send out a sincere thanks for the generous Christmas bonuses that were shared. And with that I will say… Anchors Away MIYC! The New Year is here and the energy of Club activity is clearly in the air. A glance through this Anchor Lines will surely prove that. I’m confident that every member will find something that peaks his or her interests. You may have already noticed the upbeat in activity here at the Club. We have been very active both on and off the water. It is refreshing to see the excitement being generated by the new and old Club activities alike. I am told that necessity is the mother of invention and with this increase in business it becomes essential that you make your reservations early for lunch, dinner and events. This helps Pam and me considerably, as we staff accordingly, being ever conscious of the need for the outstanding service and great food you deserve.
Pam and I continue to monitor the monthly Food and Beverage surveys and I encourage everyone to participate. We use these surveys as a tool in our ever evolving strive to get better at what we do. Your input is appreciated and needed!

Happy New Year, everyone! 2017 was a terrific year, and I believe 2018 will be even better! I enjoyed arranging the Boater’s Night programs last year as Rear Commodore—and the strong interest in our two fishing-related Boater’s Nights led to the launch of our new Fishing Club by the end of the year. I’m very excited about the prospects for 2018 as I gear up for my new role as Vice Commodore. We’re initiating some changes as part of the Strategic Plan created over the summer, and I believe you’ll find even more enjoyable activities on the water this coming year and in future years. Social Members, we hope you’ll consider upgrading so you’ll be able to take advantage of all the Boating Fun in store for us in 2018 and beyond!

Operations &HR
December has surely been a fun filled, action packed month. It began with the cancellation of the Marco Island Boat Parade that was revitalized thanks to Pete and Peggy Frazier along with Angela and Jon Holt. The Staff at the Club did an amazing job hosting over 200 guests that night. The Bridge and Member Events Committee hit a home run with a decorated boat in the street parade and celebration at the Burgee Bar after the parade. We had our usual Happy Hour Fridays, Colors Ceremony, Christmas Eve Dining with 109 members and guests, a 40% increase in attendance over last year, two member sponsored banquets, four Holiday Banquets and one large wedding. The Club was rocking all month long. A lot of progress was made in the Burgee Bar with just a few minor adjustments and TV installations. We should be ready for the Grand Opening on January 13 th . Be sure to mark your calendar as you do not want to miss this event. Don’t forget to check the January calendar for all the exciting events scheduled throughout the month. We have been experiencing higher attendance this fiscal year for all our events and are now in our busiest season. It is important that you
make your reservations early to give Chef Bob and Pam the appropriate time needed to schedule staff accordingly and order the required food and beverages to provide the service you deserve.
Bob DeFeo Operations and HR Chairman
We continue to make improvements throughout the Clubhouse. We started dressing up the landscaping in the courtyard, so it will be ready to use by January 13 th with the Grand Opening of the Burgee Bar. Plants will be added after the roof and gutters are repaired. The Club will be open Wednesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner starting January 3 rd . The Burgee Bar will be in full swing after our grand opening in January. I look forward to seeing you at the Club! Robert DeFeo Operations and HR Chairman Past Commodore

Aquafit at MIYC Aquafit classes will resume at the MIMA pool October 3 at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable, fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. We're Looking for Sponsors for New Members Are you in? Marco Island Yacht Club is growing! That's terrific, but it does bring new challenges, especially if we are to keep our reputation as the "fun and friendly" club on the Island! Prospective new Members often walk through the door without knowing a soul at the Club. That's why we would like to develop a list of Members who are willing to serve as Sponsors. What does a Sponsor do? • Meet the prospect and introduce them to others at Happy Hour • Sign the application as Sponsor • Continue to introduce them around the Club after membership is official • Invite them to join you for dinner or an event • Help them learn about all of the activities and events at the Club • Ensure that we get a photo and short bio for Communications • Generally "shepherd" them through their first month or two at the Club Being a Sponsor is a wonderful way to get to know some great new people and increase your own friendship circle. The Membership Committee Chairs will maintain the list of volunteer Sponsors and will call you when you are needed. We will try to match prospects and Sponsors by common interests, geography or some other dimension. Getting new Members off to a good start will enrich their experience and your own! Please email Cynthia Hultquist, our Membership Coordinator, at [email protected] or call 394-0199 x303 if you are willing to serve as a Sponsor. Thank you! Membership Co-Chairs Vicki Bretthauer and Kathy Caruso

MIYC Fishing Club
A new MIYC Fishing Club was launched last month. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 18, at 4:30PM at the Burgee Bar. What is the MIYC Fishing Club? Many Club Members have an interest in fishing, yet they rarely fish in southwest Florida. Why not? Either they: ◦ Do not own a boat ◦ Are looking for a friend to fish with ◦ Or are unfamiliar with the area and not quite ready to go it alone in Marco Island The Fishing Club is a solution for Members to get out and fish on a regular basis. Who can participate? All members can attend the Thursday late afternoon meetings. At each meeting, we will discuss a variety of fishing topics from “what is biting” to how to catch them to tricks of trade. Going Fishing The goal is to set 1-2 fishing trips each month (one backwater, one offshore). Full, Equity and Associate Full Members may attend these trips (one of the many “on the water” benefits of Full membership). Members who are new to fishing need to: Purchase 2 rods and reels, tackle box, basic lures, hooks, leaders, etc. (available at Sunshine Ace on San Marco). If you do not know how to cast – start practicing. When we get out on the water, the fishing is often fast and furious and it’s not the right time to learn how to cast. For those who would like to fish backwater and offshore, please learn the following basic knots. They can be found on YouTube. · FG or uni-to-uni (connects braid to mono/fluorocarbon) · Rapala knot (connect mono/floro to a lure, hook, etc.) The 3 rd Thursday of each month will be our set time for Fishing Club meetings. For those who want to stay for dinner after the meeting, Thursday is Prime Rib night! Interested in joining the Fishing Club? Contact Jeff Comeaux at [email protected]

MIYC Book Club January 2018 Selection
Young Ned Willard is coming home to Kingsbridge at Christmas as A Column of Fire opens. The year 1558 will turn Ned's life upside-down and change Europe for ever. The ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn by religious hatred. High principles clash bloodily with friendship, loyalty and love.
Please join us Thursday, January 25th at 12:00 noon - 1:30 PM for an entertaining book discussion and theme-based luncheon. Our Book Club meets the last Thursday of the month, 12:00 Noon until 1:30 PM. We enjoy an introductory overview presentation with cocktails, and continue our lively table discussions during lunch. Dessert and an all-attendee perspective concludes our meeting. Our selections for the remainder of the Season are as follows: February 22nd Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate - A South Carolina lawyer, researching her grandmother’s past, learns about a Tennessee orphanage that kidnapped children and placed them for adoption with wealthy people. March 29th Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann - The story of a murder spree in 1920s Oklahoma that targeted Osage Indians, whose lands contained oil. April 26th The Marriage Lie by Kimberly Belle - Stories of assumed or multiple identities are always intriguing, especially when the person living a double life manages to fool those closest to them, up to and including their spouse. May 31st The Rent Collector by Cameron Wright - Survival for Ki Lim and Sang Ly is a daily battle at Stung Meanchey, the largest municipal waste dump in all of Cambodia. Please join us for a lively discussion and a delicious luncheon! Reservations - 239-394-0199

Port Captain
We’re starting off the new year with some good news and some bad news. And just as they say on New Year’s Eve, “out with the bad, in with the good”, that is the way it is working out at the Marina. First the bad news. For
Club has a greater potential to obtain new Members. The Yacht Club Board recently approved a new trial Membership program for new MIMA slip owners and lessees. Therefore, the Port Captain will now be visiting the new owners and lessees at MIMA to welcome them and explain the Club’s new trial Membership. They will be invited to join us at the Burgee Bar for a Friday night Happy Hour and introduced to a number of Club Members with common interests or backgrounds. We’ll also have them join us for dinner along with another Club member to get to know them better and for them to get to know the Club and some of its Members better. This new individual approach and introduction to the Club will fit in perfectly with the new Member Sponsor program that has just been initiated for new Members. Overall, our Club should benefit from new Members who have boats right in our “front yard” even though our transient visitors’ patronage will be curtailed. Kathy Hershberger Port Captain

some time now, the number of slips available for transients at the Marina has been dwindling. The sales of slips in the last 6 months has picked up considerably, with many of the new slip owners using the slip full time for their new boats. Also, the slips available for lease have been quickly taken. Right after hurricane Irma, the Marina had a waiting list of people who wanted to lease, partly because of the shortage of slips around the Island and individual slips having been destroyed; and also, because the Marina and the boats docked there rode out the storm very well. Therefore, because of the lack of available slips for transients, there have not been many visitors to greet and invite to dine at our Club and enjoy Chef Bob’s delicious creations. However, the good news is that with the increased number of new slip owners and long-term lessees, our

Safety and Training
On-the-Water Training On-the-water training by qualified instructors is a hot topic for beginner boaters. While it is almost impossible to find a qualified instructor who will conduct hands on, on-the-water training on a client’s boat, there is a good alternative. Both the Power Squadron and the Auxiliary offer seminars to the public which focus on boating partners, e.g. Suddenly in Command and Partner in Command . These seminars are classroom presentations. (Visit the MIYC website, boating tab for details.)
Jim Olmes Safety & Training
The Squadron also offers on-the-water instruction on an owner’s boat, but the program is restricted to squadron members only. The proposal here is to promote the seminar aspects of the training and urge MIYC members to consider joining the Squadron to obtain the on-the-water instruction. A further incentive would be ready access to other advanced squadron instruction not available to the public. (For further information, contact Peggy Reiss at the Squadron (239) 213-8686.) Safety and Training Officer Effective January 9th, Geoff Walker will join the Bridge as MIYC’s Safety and Training Officer. Most recently Geoff played a key role in developing the boating plan for 2018 and beyond. Off-the-Wall Over the years here on Marco, I have heard a number of comments and statements which defy the imagination. Here are three rare beauties: • Awhile back I encountered a green marker with pole floating in the narrow channel in the “Picket Fence” idle zone area. I called in a securite and then hailed the first boat to enter the channel. I explained the hazard. The captain’s response-“Thank you for the heads-up, but I will be ok. I only use the red ones.” • Recently during a class for which I was the instructor, a student asked “What should one do if they were to throw the anchor overboard without a line attached?” Before I could frame and deliver a smartaleck response, another student blurted out “Go to West Marine as soon as possible!” • Sometimes information gets a little twisted as it’s relayed. Overheard at the “Y”, a conversation between two stationary bikers. “Have you seen the Green Hornet yet?” says one. “Don’t think so, but I’m not sure what it is.” says the other. Informed numero uno responds with “It’s something on the beach which is present when the sun goes down.” Please visit the MIYC web site at ( www.marcoislandyachtclub.net ) and click on the Boating tab for Safety and Education to find key information about classes and important marine topics.
