MIYC Member Events By Angela Holt

April at the Marco Island Yacht Club kicked off with the Talent Show-MIYC's Got Talent. The show played to a large audience in the' Theater' complete with staging and professional lighting. The acts were met with applause and standing ovations for fellow Club Members who sang, danced, played instruments and even performed a comedy act. Under the direction of the Talent Show Committee comprised of M.A. Harlacker, Maureen Haworth, Alice and Tom Jobe, Carol Comeaux, Trevor Haworth, Alan Sandlin and Angela and Jon Holt, the Members honed their acts at multiple rehearsals. The former MIYC Commodores under inspection by the first Club Commodore Don Mills opened the show with a routine set to "The Way You Do the Things You Do." The Commodores included 2019 Commodore Jeff Comeaux and Past Commodores Bob Winterhalter, Lois Dixon, Jim Marr, M.A. Harlacker, Frank Rinker and Dean Heard. This was followed by Owen O'Shaughnessy who sang a Marco Island song and played guitar brilliantly. Captain Pete Frazier then taught the Art of Nautical Knots with help from Patti Cohen. Next came Tom Morrison who had the crowd clapping with a guitar and vocal rendition of Del Shannon's 'Runaway.' Mike Hannafan played cornet and swept us back to “Radio Days" with Moonlight Serenade while Alan and Linda Sandlin did a romantic dance. Bernie Sergesketter kept the crowd in 'stitches' with his comedy act. Maureen Haworth awed as she danced, sang and acted to a rendition of My Fair Lady's 'Wouldn't It Be Loverly.' Next, the MIYC Chef Robert Aylwin, a multi-talented performer, strummed his guitar and sang an original song about 'enjoying life.' Then Rear Commodore Geoffrey Walker sang a song to his wife Cinda, "Your Just Too Good To Be True." Alan Sandlin, a Marco performer from way back, sang a Marco song written

in the 90s. The closing number was a rendition of ''My Way" by Dick Pantano and the My Wayzzz comprised of Jon Holt, Bob Aber, Harvey Cohen and Don Deganutti. After the men sang their hearts out about doing life their way, the wives popped up on stage and reminded them that "They Did It Their Way."

Angela Holt Member Events

It was a show that captured the fun, versatility and good sportsmanship of the Marco Island Yacht Club. But April also included the Dancing Under the "fans" event which followed the Member Semi-Annual Meeting. Joey Fiato kept us on our feet. And, a newer addition to our fun events was Singing Bingo! This proved to be great fun with cash prizes and a promise to schedule another bingo night soon. Although we are heading into the summer season, the Kentucky Derby Hats and Horses promises to be a show stopper. Trophies will go to the best hats in 6 categories, and cash prizes will be awarded to those who pick the winning horses in the 'most exciting 2 minutes in sports...the Run for the Roses.' We have a sell out crowd of more than 135 attendees. The Club will continue to party all through the summer with dances, karaoke, trivia and more! Stay tuned for emails and look for the summer schedule Calendar of Events at the beginning of each month. For those of you who are headed ‘North' . . . we will miss you.

Chairman’s Report

I know many of you have attended the Boater’s Night or the April Membership meeting to get more information about the project we are considering to add slips to river side of the Club. And, I have also had in-depth conversations with several members about the project. However, I thought it might be helpful to provide more information on the project status and give provide a high-level summary of the project and additional communications planned leading up to a planned decision point. The Project: Build 40 new slips (10 of which are dedicated transient slips); a boater’s lounge, office and restroom/shower facilities; and additional parking capacity. The Operating Structure: The project will be jointly run and managed by MIYC and MIMA. The two organizations envision having joint oversight of a condo-like organization for the new slips. Financing: The project anticipates financing the project through a combination of slip sales and third-party financing. We do not plan assessments to the MIMA or MIYC membership. Scheduling: We are aiming at a decision point in June 2019 that would anticipate a project completion by the end of 2020. In the past two or three months, many aspects of the project have firmed up. • We have selected a partner to help research the market in SW Florida and develop marketing and sales planning for the project. • We have had conversations with lending institutions and understand the impact of and opportunities available to finance the construction and ongoing operation. • We have had good dialogue with the city about needed parking improvements and have received their support for the plan.

• We have engaged Counsel to begin d e v e l o p i n g a p p r o p r i a t e g o v e r n i n g documents. • We have received a number of verbal commi tmen t s t o purchase slips that will be first priority for sales as soon as w e h a v e p r o j e c t approval. And, we are now ramping up

Dave Everitt Chairman

our communications efforts. The April communications meetings were a start of that process. In addition, Roy Hershberger has been writing information memos to MIMA members. We will post his communications on the MIYC web site so MIYC members can access the information. And we will post the presentations from the April communication meetings on the website. We are scheduling a series of small group meetings to allow MIYC and MIMA Members to get further information. These meetings will be held through May and will provide the opportunity for up to 150 individuals (each meeting limited to 5 participants) to participate in meetings. Information and scheduling instructions are being provided by e-blast and will also be loaded on the web site. Finally, we are expecting to solicit a vote from the respective organizations in early June. As we get closer to that date, we will be providing information on how the vote will occur, etc. I continue to be enthused about the opportunity this project will offer to help the long-term financial stability for both the Club and the Marina. That time of the year has arrived in Marco Island when two-thirds of the Island heads North, the traffic on the roads get light and you can get anywhere on the Island in ten minutes or less. For those heading North, we wish you safe travels and a wonderful summer. For those who live here full time, we look forward to a fun-filled summer with plenty of activity at MIYC.

During the summer months, we'll have Day Cruise luncheons and will visit Everglades City, the Island Gypsy, Bonefish Grill in Naples and the Boat House. Sunset Cruises will be as beautiful as ever. For those interested, we'll have an extended cruise to Marathon YC and St. Charles YC. For the fishermen, the Fishing Club will meet on the 3 rd Thursday each month (except for May) and members will be fishing inshore and offshore. Enjoy our wonderful May activities. Carol and I are sorry to miss Hats & Horses as well as many other terrific May events (due to our planned vacation) but we look forward to seeing those of you still on the Island when we return! MIYC Membership

By the time you read this column the Taste of Marco will have occurred on Sunday, April 28 th . Kathy Caruso and I were joined by Dwyn Von Bereghy and Lee Dorison at the MIYC Tent. Chef, Pam and Cynthia as well as Robert and Andrew were in full force helping us to promote our wonderful Club! The Taste of Marco was excellent this year because we were able to focus on many local residents as it was the week after Easter. Dwyn was also able to tell the locals about our plans for the Youth Sailing Area once we receive city approval. These are really exciting times! You will see some new trial summer members around our Club as we held a raffle for folks who signed up at our booth. Remember red badges are Trial Members and we now have great blue and white badges for our MIMA Burgee Members! The Burgee Bar will stay open through May so be sure to introduce yourselves to folks you don’t know! And, we’re still waiting for our new badges for our Equity Members. (The supplier sent us the wrong color of blue so we had to re-order.) If you are an Equity Member and would like a new name badge, please e m a i l C y n t h i a H u l t q u i s t a t [email protected] with how you would like your name badge to read. Bring your old name badge and she will be able to replace the lettering on the badge. It is that easy! We will keep you posted about new badges and the Wine Bin Program in a separate email. Let me share our upgrades of Memberships with you! Joan and Gerry Gorman upgraded to Full Membership from Social Membership and Shelly Derrough and David Randall have upgraded to Equity Membership! This is my favorite part of the column, to welcome all of our new Members! First, I need to correct my post about Nora Brown and Ed Kosakoski (Marco Patriots Raffle). Nora, I apologize as I didn’t show your last name. Welcome to our Club. The system knows your names!

Now, for the rest of the folks who have joined us in recent weeks: (I hope Linda Marr has enough room for my column!) Robert McDonnell and Sara Straney are new Equity Members of our Club. They spend the summer in Chicago and have already visited our Club many times! Geoff and Kathie Fahringer were our first Summer Members and have already agreed to be Social Members of our Club this Fall. Jim and Robin Eble and Mark Stephens joined us as Full Members from MIMA. We always love new Members coming to us with a boat close by! Janet and Dick Carpenter , former Social Members, are coming back to us as Equity Members this Fall thanks to Members Alice & Tom Jobe and Belle Leunig, neighbors of the Carpenters. George and Theresa Vitta had joined us for a month with our new home owners offer and loved our Club and are new Non-Res Full Members! Peg and Dennis Lello loved their Walker three- month trial Membership so much that they have reactivated their Equity Membership! Tom and Linda Sessa also joined as Full Members after their three-month Walker trial Membership. Kat Sanders and Scott Birkhead are raffle winners from Marco Patriots who are joining us for a three-month trial. Finally, Virginia (formerly Jermanok) & Robert Colangelo, Robert LaPenta and Fred Wells all have joined us for a year of Membership in exchange for the refundable portion of their initiation fee. Please welcome aboard all these new Members! Be sure to Mark your calendar for all the exciting events that our Member Events Committee plans for us as well as our Boating Committee! Please remember to wear your nametags AND remember to make reservations for all events and dining. It so helps the Staff to be able to have the appropriate number of servers available. Singing Bingo! It was a laugh a minute! We had cocktails, a lovely choice of dinner specials and then the entertainment started. Tony Dodge sang requests and the Members even did a New York, New York kick line. Since the evening was about bingo, we finally got into the swing of the game. and the competition was fierce. There were 6 prizes, five of them at $50 each and one at $100. It was a fun-filled night.

Mariner's Society Donations from Members make a real difference to the success of Marco Island Yacht Club. Our generous Members enable the Club to make beautiful renovations and provide extra "pop" at events. For example, the Burgee Bar renovation was made possible entirely by Member donations. The bar was expanded, new drop down window covers were installed and attractive curtains and valances were added. How Can I Donate? You can make a general donation or donate for a specific project. We have identified a number of needs and wishes, which are listed in a binder just below a recognition plaque in the lobby area. Here is a sampling of initiatives we are looking for Member donations to fund: • Landscaping around the front of the Club • Upstairs dining room chairs • Major update of upstairs dining room If you'd like to donate to one of these initiatives or any other project of your choice, please download the Mariner Donation Form , on which you can indicate the project you wish to support, the amount of donation and how you wish to pay (separate check, credit card or Club monthly statement.) If there is something special you would like to see happen and would like to financially support, please let any member of the Board, Bridge or Mariner's Committee know. Mariner's Society Recognition Levels A Mariner's Society recognition plaque in the lobby hallway honors the cumulative contributions Members have made. • Bronze $ 2,500-$4,000 $40,000-$50,000 $$$ to be determined

$ 500 $ 2,500 $ 10,000 $ 20,000 $ 50,000 $100,000

Club Calendar Building:101 By Vicki Bretthauer Many folks know that I manage the Club calendar each year and some of you asked how it is planned. Pam Dorr, our Dining and Banquet Manager, is also a key player in this process. So how does the Club calendar for the next year get built? The day after Blessing of the Fleet in mid-February is when the process begins for the next fiscal year! The first thing done is to place the Natural dates on the Calendar: • Colors, mostly the 3rd Friday of the month except for Veteran's Day, Memorial Day and St. Patrick's Day. Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day make sense but you ask, “Why St. Patrick’s Day?” Well, the Colors ceremony for March is always later so it doesn't conflict with St. Patrick's Day Happy Hour. This was done years ago by a Commodore to maintain the solemnity of the ceremony. So, as you can see, our Bridge Events take priority! Next, all FCYC Dates are placed on the FY2020 Calendar followed by all Cruising Events! This is where the conflicts begin! Day Cruises and Extended Cruises get added to the calendar. Due to a dockage constraint the January 2020 Extended and Day Cruise conflicted with Boater’s Night, so the January 2020 Boaters' Night is moved to Wed., Jan 15th. The Extended Cruise to the Bahamas is March 14-22, 2020. Since there are also two charter boats available, this cruise will fill quickly with 8 member couples! Marco Island Events are placed on the FY2020 Calendar (Holiday Boat Parade, Holiday Street Parade) along with the standard holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day and Easter. Some sunset cruises then get moved due to where Thanksgiving and Christmas fall. Next, we start filling in with our Signature Events blocking dates so that Pam knows what she has available to sell for outside banquets. Weddings sometimes are planned out for more than a year so we need to honor commitments we have already made to groups. We have to support our Clubhouse, non-Boating Membership and Staff. We have to make sense of who will attend events and when. So, that is how we then plan Wine & Dine and other events. Chef gets consulted to see if he can have dining upstairs or downstairs while still having a Club Event. Angela Holt, Chair of Member Events, then asks for dates available for planning events. She has to quickly book entertainment NOW as performers are already booking for Season 2020. The calendar is a living document so that is why we present you one for the month and the outlook so you can plan when to be at your Club! We will be sending you the May calendar, the May through the rest of the season calendar and the DRAFT for our Fiscal Year 2020 (Oct 2019-Sep 2020) in early May over Angela’s signature. We want you to plan to be at as many Club events as possible! And now you know all the things that are considered when we build your Club Calendar! • Commodore’s Ball • Blessing of the Fleet • Boaters' Night (1st Wed of the month) • Sunset Cruises (4th Wed of the month)

MIYC Fishing Club Thursday, May 23rd 11:30 April fishing in the Marco Island area was

good--when the winds were not blowing hard. For those who fished offshore, we found a good bite 45 – 55 miles out in 90-115 feet of water. As we move into May, the water temperature will increase and fishing everywhere will become more productive. Offshore fishing in 110-125 feet of water for Large Red Grouper (over 30 inches) should be good. Backwater fishing will quickly improve as the shallow water warms up and the Trout, Snook and Redfish become more active. Locals are reporting a good bite with Trout. Just find some grassing area and the Trout will follow.

Six members of the Fishing Club completed our 2 nd annual trip to Islamorada to fish for Tarpon. We raised five Tarpon and landed three. In addition, we caught 12 Nurse Shark up to 200 pounds and a variety of Snapper, Grouper, Rays and Shark. Great fishing!! We are now planning an offshore trip in Islamorada for late June for Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo and maybe more Tarpon. Watch your eblasts for more information about upcoming trips. That’s why we are promoting Ocean Habitats’ “Mini Reefs” to Members to be installed under your docks. We have three under our MIYC docks and dozens of Members are installing them, too. . Each reef establishes an ecosystem of aquatic life under the docks which mimics the environment normally found in the prop root system of mangrove trees. Once established, one reef can clean 30,000 gallons of water a day. Left: Carri and John Kendall with David Wolff.

House & Staff

April was another fantastic month with some well attended activities. Easter was the best with over 300 Members and guests being served. Hats off to Chef, Pam and kitchen and front of house Staff for an outstanding job. Unfortunately, it is that time of year again when a lot of our Members start heading north; they will be missed. As we roll through May, attendance will begin to drop off but Angela Holt and the Member Events Committee will continue to provide us with some wonderful events for all the year-round Members and summer reciprocals throughout this summer. Chef Aylwin is also planning on creating some exciting menus and specials throughout the summer. Be sure to check our calendar and watch your e-mails so you do not miss any of these terrific events. The Burgee Bar and Club dining days/hours will remain the same throughout the month of May. The Club summer schedule will begin in June. We will still be closed on Monday and Tuesday. Lunch will be served on Thursday and Friday only from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Dinner will be served Wednesday through Saturday 5:30 to 8:00 PM and Sunday Brunch will be 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Calling in your reservations is very important. Since we have fewer Members here during the summer, if there are no reservations for any given night, there is a possibility we will close for that evening. Therefore, it is so important to call and make a reservation if you plan on dining with us.

Staff Updates: Some of our seasonal kitchen employees will be leaving by the end of May. Our regular kitchen and front- end Staff will still be here. Pam just hired Patricia Simoni a new bartender/ server. When you see her

Robert J DeFeo

be sure to welcome her to the MIYC family. We are in the process of hiring a new maintenance person and have a couple of good leads and hope to have this position filled by the end of June. Some Club updates: We recently had the A/C unit replaced that covers the downstairs dining area and hallway. Thank you, Heyward Boyce and the Building and Grounds Committee. We will be replacing some windows in the upstairs kitchen that are in poor shape and the portico windows that were damaged from IRMA. We now have digital communication set-up for our fire alarm system eliminating the problem we were having with the dedicated landline communications. The new sound and speaker system should be installed by the end of May thanks to Dave and Ellie Everitt. See you at the Club,

Extended Cruising: A Lifestyle and Adventure

Before moving to Florida to retire in 2005, Linda and I started to live our dream: To live aboard and cruise on our sailboat in the coastal waters of Southern California and Mexico. We did it for almost three years, before ending up in Port Everglades, Florida. We learned a lot along the way and had many interesting adventures. Now, as members of the SW Florida boating community and proud Members of Marco Island Yacht Club and the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, we want to continue our adventures and encourage other couples to take the challenge. We sold our 60’ sailboat and now have a trawler (a move we refer to as “going to the dark side), but age and experience became a factor. Back in the earlier days of our Club, we all participated in many Extended Cruises, power and sailboats all together. Adventuring up and down both coasts of Florida, the Bahamas and also participating in major sailboat races to Mexico and other venues. Your Bridge and Boating Committee are now working to bring those memorable events back into our Club.

learn as much as you can about navigation, boat safety, weather, anchoring, meal planning and dining on board.

I have also been a proud member of the US Power Squadron since 1962 and would encourage all boaters to join or take part in the many informative courses the Marco Squadron provides. Your MIYC will continue to move boating forward with great cruising schedules, seminars and training, but we must know who wants to become part of the team. We need your participation and ideas. Look for and participate in our 2019-2020 Cruising Schedule. Many in our club have the talent and experience, and we want to share. Join us! Ray Rosenberg Vice Commodore, MIYC

MIYC Book Club Thursday, May 30 th - Noon - 1:30 PM Please join us for our May Book Club Luncheon Presented by Carol Comeaux Book Summary Educated

Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills" bag. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged metal in her father's junkyard. Her father distrusted the medical establishment, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when an older brother became violent. When another brother got himself into college and came back with news

of the world beyond the mountain, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. She taught herself enough mathematics, grammar, and science to take the ACT and was admitted to Brigham Young University. There, she studied psychology, politics, philosophy, and history, learning for the first time about pivotal world events like the Holocaust and the Civil Rights Movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she'd traveled too far, if there was still a way home. * * * * * Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty, and of the grief that comes from severing ties with those closest to you. With the acute insight that distinguishes all great writers, Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see one's life through new eyes, and the will to change it. All Members are welcome at the Book Club luncheons. Even if you did not have a chance to read the book, you can learn a lot and enjoy intriguing conversations about life. Men are welcome, too!
