New Look for the Harbour Room!

More than 75 Members attended the event and dined on a special menu presented by Chef Bob. Jon and Angela Holt, co- chairs of the Mariners Fund, who l ehear t ed l y t hanked t hose Member s who generously contributed to the fund which made the refurbishment possible. Geoff Walker, the Chair of Buildings and Grounds, worked closely with the painting contractor and Angela and Jon Holt who oversaw the painting project. Henry Stanley selected the correct lighting and assisted with the project. It was a group effort that worked well and the job was finished on time.

The Harbour Room was refurbished in September receiving a new look. The room now is painted in shades of white with a coordinating grass cloth paper covering the wainscoting. Members were invited to a "reveal" evening on October 2, where the new light colored room and brushed chrome chandeliers were shown off for the first time. The Mariners Fund was responsible for raising the revenue for the painting and chandeliers in the Harbour Room, rotunda and the Board/bridge Room.

Noon Rotary on Marco Island. Linda Sandlin, who is President of the Marco Island Noon Rotary this year and a Club Member brought the program to our attention. Dwyn and her c o m m i t t e e w i l l b e collecting to honor all our Club Members who are Veterans. We need to collect $3,000 to honor all our Members who are Veterans. Each year we also collect for the Toys for Tots program. This year, the collection is cash

There are lots of activities underway at the Club! Despite the coronavirus impact, we have had good turnout from Members since we reopened at the end of September. We have also seen good interest in scheduling banquets this fall. We are maintaining a more conservat ive seat ing arrangement and mask policy. If any Member suspects they have been exposed to COVID, please refrain from using the Club until you either have a negative test or are cleared by your health professional. And, as always, if a Member doesn't feel well, we ask them to not come to the Club. The most obvious activity at the Club is the commencement of the work for the seawall. We pulled the pavers during mid-October and the contractors showed up on site the 22nd of October to begin demolition; certainly, an exciting time! A portion of the circle drive has been blocked off as well as a portion of our courtyard. There is safety fencing instal led to block access to the construction area. It will be in place for much of the project. There is minimal impact on parking, though from time to time there will be refuse trucks in and around the construction area as they exchange refuse containers. (See photos on p. 4) There are several community relations activities I want to call your attention to. This is an area we have been increasing our focus on more in the last year or so. This year we are elevating the effort by establishing a separate Member Committee dedicated to community relations. Dwyn Von Bereghy is Chairing the Community Relations Committee . She has been working to improve our connection to various activities that benefit the community for the past year or two. The most significant activity Dwyn has under her supervision is the relationship with the Sailing Center . We had a great year in 2020, despite the coronavirus. Members supported the program with contributions to scholarship funds and the purchase of boats. Quite a number of children in the community benefited from the program this past year. In November and December Dwyn’s committee with focus on the Flag for Our Heroes Program as well as our annual participation in Toys for Tots. Flags for Our Heroes is being sponsored by the

based, due to the corona virus impact. More this year than in the past, families who are impacted by reduced income due to the coronavirus need our help. Please consider making a donation to the program this year. Look for a campaign to solicit funds in November and early December! Please see Dwyn’s column in this issue and look for eblasts on how you can participate! Finally, each year at this time we ask Members to contribute to the Employee Holiday Fund . You will see a charge on the invoice you receive in early December for the fund. You can decline the contribution, but I would ask that you consider accepting the contribution. Our employees have continued to work hard to deliver great service and support to our Club and our Members through the challenges we faced this year. I hope you will join Ellie and me in supporting our Employee Holiday Fund this year. The 'vibe' around the Club as we begin our 20th year reflects the excitement and engagement of our Members! Make sure you take the opportunity to take advantage of our events and activities this year. And, your support of our community through programs like the Sailing Club, Toys for Tots, and the Flags for Heroes help improve our Marco Island community! Dave Everitt Chairman

* SHIPùS STORE NEWS * Shop Safe * Convenient front desk pick-up * New mailing option Ship’s Store Cleared the Decks! By Deb DeVries The Ship's Store held a "Clearance Sale" on Sunday, October 25. The sale was "wildly successful"! It reduced our in-house inventory by about 50% and met our financial projections. It was lots of fun for the shoppers, many of whom did early holiday shopping and got some great bargains. I want to thank Ellie Everitt and Michele Niblack, Members of Ship’s Store Committee, for their leadership and management of this effort. There were many other volunteers who in addition to working the sale were some of the best shoppers! I am the new Chair of the Ship’s Store

Committee and looking forward to working with Ellie, Michele, and others. We plan to be a part of the new technology being implemented in the Club next year which will make inventory management much easier. We will be looking at merchandise closely to determine the best selection in keeping with a Yacht Club theme. New merchandise is already arriving - I know that Ellie and Michele have been doing a lot of unpacking - and I encourage you to check out the Ship’s Store!

Movie Night at the Club A new event at the Club. Movie Night! Pam bought a really cool blowup screen and Voila! Movies in the Courtyard! Members sat in the Burgee Bar and ate while watching Captain Ron on the “Big Screen”! Hopefully this will become a monthly event!

Mini Halloween Party How did this happen? Well, we cancelled the Monster Mask because so few Members signed up. But that didn't make some Members very happy since they love Halloween. So, on the spur of the moment....pretty much the day of....we decided to do a little decorating and those who love to come in disguise will have their moment. Happy Halloween, everyone!

Boat er s ù Ni ght Wednesday, November 4 th Cocktails - 6pm Dinner - 7pm Living with less...experiencing more!‰‰ Reliving the Loop with Pete and Peggy Frazier 6253 miles / 5000+ gallons of diesel fuel / 525 engine hours / 150 days of cruising - We did the loop in 2005 ..and more than a dozen trips up the East Coast. Taking Pelican to Fl in 2019 completed the 2nd Loop! Gentle Members, I will let Peggy Frazier describe their epic adventure with much better words than I could muster:

A voyage of over 6,000 miles, the America's Great Loop runs up the East Coast of the United States on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, continues on the Hudson River to the Erie Canal and through the Great Lakes. From there, it travels down the Illinois River and the Mississippi River to the Tennessee River and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. Finally, the loop is completed along the Gulf Coast Intracoastal Waterway. It is a trip of a lifetime! Since we have done the Loop, people have asked us to name our favorite destination on the Loop. It's hard to say which port or destination was the favorite. Every place we saw or stopped was part of the journey, so to pick one or even three places is too hard. But we can tell you my favorite part of the Loop was doing this epic adventure with each other. Pete was an incredible captain and companion. It was amazing doing the Loop (and ReLoop) with him. We grew as individuals and as a couple. Find whatever floats your boat and set sail! Our final thought on the trip is summed up by a toast: There are all kinds of ships… Big ships, small ships, but the BEST ships, are friendships! Come aboard with Pete and Peggy as they relive the America’s Great Loop, accompanied by a special menu created by Chef Bob. MIYC's Community Relations As you may know, we as Members of MIYC support many community organizations. In the past we were part of the Living Reef Project for Marco Island and Goodland and we continue to support: Marco Island Youth Sailing Program Marco Patriots Flags for our Heroes (sponsored by Noon Rotary) Toys for Tots Our Daily Bread Food Pantry

Thank you to all of our Members who supported the Our Daily Bread Food Pantry Event on Saturday, October 24 th . As you know, many of the service organizations on the island along with the Marco Police and Fire Departments held a food drive at Veteran’s Park. Many of our Members turned out to support this wonderful cause! We, of course, continue to support the Food Pantry with the basket in the lobby. Please bring your donations to the Club often. We will make sure your donations get over to the pantry. Our focus for November and December is going to be Flags for Our Heroes and on our annual Toys for Tots Program. Flags for Our Heroes is a fundraiser for our community to help those less fortunate. Commodore Ray Rosenberg and Members Linda and Alan Sandlin have brought this community project to our attention. Flags honoring our Heroes will be displayed at Veteran’s Park the week of February 14 th to honor Heroes in our community. We would like to honor all of our MIYC Members who are Veterans and we would like MIYC to be a sponsor of such a wonderful event. Flags are $50 each to honor one of our Veterans. Any additional funds collected will go towards MIYC’s Sponsorship of this great cause to support our community. We need to raise the funds by December 11 th so that the appropriate flags with the names of our Members who are Veterans can be ordered. So that you can receive a charitable deduction for your donation to this wonderful cause please make a check out to Rotary Club of Marco Island Foundation and put MIYC in the memo section. Now, with the pandemic we have sadly have new procedures for Toys for Tots. The need in our community is now stronger than ever for donations during this holiday season. The Salvation Army already has 50% more applications for help this holiday season. Your donation made out to The Salvation Army with Naples Cheer Program in the memo can also be turned in to our Reception Desk to the attn: of Vicki Bretthauer. We will be sending donations from the Club to the Salvation Army after the Country Western Jam Session on November 21 st when we Pass the Boot for Toys for Tots as well as after our Member Holiday Party on December 5 th . The Salvation Army will be purchasing gift cards for local families for Publix and Target so that they can purchase food and toys for the holiday season. You can also call the Club’s Accounting Office on 239-394-0199 x306 and tell Carlota that you would like to donate to Flags for Our Heroes and/or Toys for Tots with an amount and we will bill your account. It was so nice to see so many of our Members at the unveiling of the Harbour Room. It is so bright and cheery! Everyone was in a great mood. Many of you have been returning to the island the month of October and there have been plenty of events to welcome you! I am still amazed at how warm it is in late October. I’d sure rather be warm than cold though. I’d like to welcome Barbara and Doug Hess to our Club as Social Members. Some of you may remember Barbara and Doug as they were Members during the summer of 2019 but then moved from the island. They returned to the island late summer this year and one of their first stops was back to us to join the Club! Also, Dr. Carol and Robert Boyle joined the Club as Social Members as part of Members Recruiting Members sponsored by the DeFeos! We’re also welcoming Gina and Curt Conti to our Club as Full Members. Many of you may have met them at the Piano Bar Evening. Congratulations to Roberta (Bobbi) and Steve Billmyer who are our newest Equity Members upgrading with just days remaining! Thank you for supporting your Club! Member Recruiting Members is still in place so be sure to recommend friends to join our Club. You and your friends will receive $100 gift certificates if your recommended Members join the Club and pay joining fees! Our other activities like Fla-mingling are on hold until COVID is under control. In the meantime, stay safe, wave at your friends across the dining room and come to your Club often!

We will be reaching out to Members to be sure we have an accurate listing of all our Members who are Veterans so you will be honored in the Flags for our Heroes Program in February 2021. Please be sure to check the list of members who are Veterans in this issue.

MIYC Member Events By Angela Holt

October was the kick-off of the new season and Member Events has been in full gear. We started the month with a 'reveal' of the new Harbour Room. The light tones of the walls and columns were met favorably. Members were pleased with the grass cloth trim on the wainscoting, and the new chandeliers in the Harbour Room, rotunda and Board/Bridge room were well received. Members who contributed to the Mariners Fund responsible for the refurbishment were wholeheartedly thanked. The following weekend we celebrated Oktoberfest with special German dishes including sauerbraten and apple strudel among other selections. On October 24, we hosted our first piano bar evening with Mike Nardi, husband of our receptionist Patty. Members could request tunes, song-along or simply sit back and enjoy the music. Mike, who has played for 40 years in New York City, never uses music. He is a great talent who just has the gift. On November 7, we will hold our Welcome Back event, Cheers to Twenty Years. The evening promises to be memorable with tributes to those charter members and longtime members who are responsible for the member- owned MIYC. Alan

O ' Sh a u g h n e s s y a n d Tom Morrison will be our featured event at the Country Jam Session. T h e Jenny Raber Duo will also perform providing dance music for the evening. We will be collecting for Toys For Tots that evening. Please note that this year the young folks and their parents need the help more than ever. And then, believe it or not, we are starting the holiday season. Make sure you get your reservations in for Thanksgiving Dinner. The Club will be following safety protocol and requiring Members to do social distancing and to wear your masks. Angela Holt Chair, Member Events Committee Halloween Fun This photo couldn’t be left out! Angela and Jon Holt showed up last minute for the “Mini Halloween Party”. The actual party was cancelled because of the few reservations. However, some people still came for dinner and dressed up! Angela and Jon were so gracious; they threw on their costumes and zipped over to the Club to join in and take pictures. “No bones about it, “said Angela, “we had a great Halloween!”

Fishing Club Thursday, November 19 th Lunch - 11:30am In November, the Gulf should calm down, ending a record-breaking season of tropical storms and hurricanes. The water temperature is falling (now at 79 degrees) and the fish are starting to move to shallower water. This means fewer trips 50 – 60 miles offshore to find deep water of 100 feet plus. October proved to be a great month for off-shore fishing! Several fishing club members got together on multiple trips where we limited out on Red Grouper (average size 26 inches) and caught a variety of other fish including African Pompano, Red Snapper, Mutton Snapper, Goliath Grouper, Spanish Mackerel and

trips to the middle Keys and Key West. The backwater bays produce a great bite with Speckled Sea Trout, Redfish, Snook, Black Drum, Triple-tails, Spanish Mackerel, Gag Grouper, Black-tip Sharks, and Ladyfish. The Florida Keys will have fantastic bite through the winter months with Black-fin Tuna, Kingfish, Cobia, Wahoo and more. When fishing out of Islamorada, you only need to travel 5-10 miles offshore to pick up the Gulf Stream – the home for an enormous variety of fish. On October 22, the Fishing Club got together for our monthly lunch and meeting. The MIYC staff did a great job arranging tables to ensure good social distancing. Chef Bob provided an excellent lunch as well. At the meeting we discussed: • Fishing trips to Islamorada (December and the spring) • Plans for two local fishing outings around Marco – backwater and offshore • Tentative plans to fish Casa Vieja Lodge, Guatemala - Jan/Feb Information will be communicated via email to Fishing

THE GREAT MIYC WINE SURVEY SUMMARY Gentle Members: The results of the Great MIYC Wine Survey are here, and the news is… MIYC Members love wine, want more and better wine, want to explore new wines and wine ideas, want to have fun with wine, food and friends! The results of the Survey are a fascinating portrait of an amazing, dynamic group of knowledgeable people who are brimming with ideas and enthusiasm about enhancing the Wine Experience at MIYC. We are so gratified to see the level of excitement that this initiative is creating. Are Members interested in learning more about wine? Absolutely! Only 4 respondents replied that they would not like to learn more about wine at all, but everyone else said they wouldn’t mind learning a bit once in awhile (41%), or would welcome the opportunity to learn (23%). The rest, almost 1/3 of the Club, said, “Let’s have some wine tastings, classes or wine trips!” Members do understand the differences of region and country when it comes to buying wine. According to the Survey, the number-one factor Members take into account in wine purchasing is Country, followed closely by Price, Rating, Brand and Varietal. Other factors are Region, Vintage, State (or province). Less important factors are Medals, whether the wine is Organic or not, and alcohol levels. Members want MORE WINES, and from MORE PLACES! They also want to see more Ports, Aperitifs, and more Cordials. Comments about improving the Wine Presentation included several requests for upgraded glassware, use of decanters and table-side ice buckets, setting up a wine bar, a rotating list of higher quality wines by the glass. Members want to see servers trained to offer advice and options about wine, also a Sommelier equivalent staff member who can give knowledgeable wine advice. Members also seem to want a more descriptive wine list, including monthly specials or “best finds”. This is a lot to digest! Now that we have an idea of what Members want, we need to bring in suppliers, have them uncork their wares, and then set about the arduous task of selecting a variety of wines to see which ones are what Members want to drink. Members will be an essential part of this difficult process, as you will be forced to taste lots of fabulous wines in order to render your verdict. We’re going to ask a lot of all of you in this. You might have to even endure wine pairing nights, wine dinners, wine flights, happy hour wine specials, wine events and blind tastings. There’s a lot of wine drinking to do before we get this right, but I think our Members are just the people to do it, and do it in style! Thank you so much for your participation and support as we launch this wine adventure together. To All My Fellow Yacht Club Members: As your newly appointed Safety and Training Officer, I would first like to acknowledge and thank Trevor Haworth for his many contributions to the Club in this position. I am honored to be trusted as his replacement and will do my utmost to responsibly fill this position. On the first day of my appointment, I was asked on Boaters’ Night to give a presentation on what I consider to be “must have” safety equipment when a sea. I explained the importance of being prepared for any unexpected

In addition, a short film on deploying a life raft was shown, and recommendations essential to any ditch bag. Whether you are the captain, first mate, or simply a guest aboard, basic information and procedures can save your life. Although too lengthy to review procedures and equipment here, I am currently working on including all this information on the MIYC website in “Safety and Education” under “Boating”. Getting to Know You Meet our new General Manager Joe Ceci! By M.A. Harlacker Joe is originally from the Northeast, having been born and reared in Queens, NY. He attended Horizons Prep School in Fresh Meadows, NY. As well as New York, Joe has resided in Connecticut, Nashville, TN, Maryland, and now in Florida. He has been married for 27 years to his wife Jessie. They have two children: a son Alex (22 years old) who lives in Saint Louis, MO, and a daughter Brenda (21 years old), who lives in Florida.

Joe has had extensive experience in the Private Club Industry and Management. Clubs included Yacht, golf, tennis, aquatics and fitness centers and multiple dining areas as well as large catered events. He has been a member of Country Club Managers Association of America since 1997. Joe feels that, “With over 25 years in the private club industry, my passion remains a large part of who I am – a forward-thinking Executive Leader and communicator who excels at analyzing member needs, identifying lucrative business opportunities, defining strategies for attaining new members, developing an existing client base, and achieving solid leveraging in competitive markets.” In the next year, Joe would like to “Set MIYC on course to be recognized as and become a member of the exclusive ‘Platinum Club of America’ group.” His outside activities include Golfing, Fishing, Boating and Cooking. Favorite vacation spots are summers in Montauk, Long Island, NY and winters in Vermont and/or Florida. Joe is open to all kinds of music, and especially loves Chocolate Chip cookies and Homemade Pasta. Also, on his bucket list is a trip with his son to remote Alaska for salmon fishing. The causes that he cares about are abused children, Dementia Society of America, and No Child Left Behind. He has a great personal motto: “Seek Respect, Not Attention. For every weird thing we had to do, like keeping 6 feet away from Bob Winterhalter at all times, there was something great that happened, like the beginning of the Marina Project. For every painful memory, like the imposition of the mask-wearing rule, there was something much better to remember, like the way Chef Bob improved the menu and the quality of food. Now, if only we could eat Chef’s Jambalaya through those masks.. Seriously, the December Boaters’ Night will be a humorous festival like nothing you’ve ever seen before at a Boaters’ Night. Some aspects of the evening’s program must necessarily be kept a surprise, but, I promise you, it will be a very pleasant surprise. Missing this event would be like missing Halley’s Comet – it only comes around once in a lifetime. (Sorry if that reference went over anyone’s head). The Bridge and your fellow Members want to entertain you in the worst way, and believe me, that is exactly what you’re going to get! Thoughts fromOctober Boaters’ Night

Gentle Members, For Boaters’ Night in October, we welcomed a new Safety and Training Officer to the Bridge, Jim Rich. Members know Jim as an experienced yachtsman, a meticulous and capable Cruise Captain, and all-around great guy. So, when Jim approached me about doing a safety-oriented program for the September Boaters’ Night, I decided that this kind of thing was what Boaters’ Night was all about. Many boating Members did not have ditch bags aboard. Other Members had heard of Ditch Bags, but were uncertain about what should go in them. Others didn’t have a clue, but figured that whatever Jim Rich had to say would be worth a listen. Jim was

Finally, I heard about a great book to pack in the Ditch Bag, The Diver’s Guide to Survival. I figured that if the author could show people how to survive underwater, those tips would be even more valuable for those still left on the surface. I told Alexa to order it from Amazon (although there was a lot of static from the speaker at the time). I was so happy when the book arrived, although I did wonder why the cover had a skinny lady on it, drinking a martini, instead of a scuba guy. I was so proud to show the Survival Guide to Jim, but he told me that it was a survival guide for Divas, not for Divers. No wonder the advice in the book seemed to be about mascara and how to behave at parties. Anyway, Members present at the Boaters’ Night saw both Ditch Bags, and had a chance to experience the latest in preparedness and preposterousness. If your boat is big enough, my advice is to bring both Ditch Bags: If you gotta go, go in style!

Sure, after the boat goes down, it’s great to have a fully-stocked life raft, but what about after you’ve been adrift awhile? What about cocktails, or wine? Where to stow the cheese board? Of course, my Ditch Bag had the essentials in it, like Lifesavers candy, a corkscrew, and a martini shaker. But I also thought ahead to those lonely hours adrift or washed up on a desert island: I included bright orange playing cards for passing the time, and for spelling out S-O-S (or other fun messages) on the sand, Collapsible martini glasses (lightweight, take up little
