A global city

4 | Assistant Director - Capital Development

Manchester is a great global city, an amazing place to live, study, work and visit.

It is one of the UK’s liveliest cultural hotspots, with galleries, libraries and museums to rival the best in the world. As the world’s first industrialised city, Manchester has its roots firmly in innovation, creativity and business. It is a stimulating and enriching place, attracting and retaining a broad talent pipeline and deserving of its ever-growing recognition as the original modern city. With world-class transport and access to the rest of the UK and beyond, Manchester is truly a well-connected, international city. It’s a major hub for innovation and has one of the biggest creative and digital sectors in the UK. Exciting plans for an International Screen School in Manchester will further reinforce this, attracting more key creative players to our city, one that is definitely open for business. As the biggest UK centre for business, financial and professional services outside of London, many global banking, science and technology corporations have their headquarters here in Manchester. With over 70,000 students, attracted to the city from all over the world, Manchester is the second largest student city in the UK. Everything that Manchester represents – a global, cutting-edge, creative, innovative city that is known for doing things first – infuses our culture here at Manchester Metropolitan University.

A leading, modern university with a rich heritage

and its staff and alumni include more than 80 published poets and novelists, who between them have won almost every literary prize going. We are not only ambitious for ourselves, but also for our students. We have recently initiated a large-scale business change programme that will comprehensively transform the processes and technology we deploy to engage with students – from the first point of contact through to graduation and their continued journey as alumni of the University. This change programme will ensure that students are at the heart of our University and transform the ways in which we work together. We deliver outstanding research that addresses the biggest challenges facing contemporary society. 85% of our research impact is rated world-leading and internationally excellent and we rose 12 places in the Times Higher Education rankings for the quality of our REF2014 submission. The quality of our research is articulated through distinctive areas of impact that help us to stand out from the crowd. We are creative, innovative and driven by a curiosity for new ideas. Our confidence is matched by our achievements; we are the top modern university for the power of research in allied healthcare disciplines and have outstanding research in biomedical science, education, sociology, poetry and creative writing, and art and design. Research with impact

Ranked among the top universities in the world, we are proud of our 19th century origins, and excited by our future as a modern, metropolitan institution, engaged with the challenges of the 21st century. In the last ten years we have transformed our estate through a major capital investment programme, and will continue to invest to ensure that our facilities, buildings and public spaces meet the aspirations of our students, teachers and researchers. Our ambitious plans will change the shape of our University and our city. The next phase of our estates programme sees a further £400m+ committed to our campus, including exciting plans for the Manchester Poetry Library in 2019 and the International Screen School Manchester in 2021. Every day the work that takes place across the University advances knowledge and transforms lives. Take, for example, our new Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre, which is helping to power everything from our homes to the cars we drive via hydrogen fuel cells that create green and emission- free energy. Meanwhile, we are also a world leader in the potentially ground-breaking area of graphene electrochemistry, working extensively in both its manufacture and applications to further knowledge in critical areas such as energy storage. The Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy is Director of the Manchester Writing School, one of the largest centres for education and training in creative writing in the country. The Writing School delivers research and teaching in all the major literary forms Ambitious and forward-thinking

The Manchester Movement Unit provides affordable physiotherapy, acupuncture and massage treatments to the public, staff and sports scholars. 7. The Manchester School of Architecture is ranked 6th in the world in the QS rankings 2017. 8 . We are leading on the new International Screen School along with Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle. 9 . Our approach We are a great modern university, in a great global city, here to make an impact on Manchester, our nation and beyond. Our driving ambition is to discover and disseminate knowledge, and make higher education accessible and beneficial to all those with the passion and ability to succeed. We work closely with our city, with business, the community and our academic peers – locally, nationally and internationally – to be inventive and creative, generate great opportunities, and enable our students, colleagues and everyone whose lives we touch to make an impact.

The following themes drive Manchester

Metropolitan and make us the bold, ambitious, creative

and innovative University we are today.

Place Bringing our strategy to life

Ambition Setting the bar higher to make more of an impact

Partnership Reaching out to push the boundaries of the possible Education, and particularly higher education, should always be a collaborative process, and here at Manchester Metropolitan our world is enriched and our achievements made more effective through partnership at every level.

We are ambitious and happy to shout about it. Ambitious for our students. Ambitious for our staff. For our partners. And for ourselves as an academic institution. We expect a lot from everyone who studies and works here. We set high standards and measure our success by the impacts we make academically, in business and society.

Sustainability Working hard now and in the future to help craft a better world Higher education exists in an increasingly dynamic, demanding and competitive world, where to stand still is to go backwards. At Manchester Metropolitan, we have a conscious cultural commitment to maintaining our energy levels and driving up academic and creative standards, achievements in research and community engagement.

Community Making a contribution not just to one community, but to many

We are an active, energetic and engaged university, putting our thinking and ideas, our research and knowledge, to work in the real world. Our staff, students and alumni contribute not only to the Manchester Metropolitan community, but to all the communities and lives we touch.
