The Human Touch Dentistry Is More Than Just Fixing Teeth

Throughout my life, I’ve always wanted to be in the health care field. Even as a little kid, whenever the ubiquitous question of “What do you want to be when you grow up?” came around,“doctor” was at the top of the list. My interest in the field — which developed further as I got older — stemmed from the fact that medicine is both scientific and people-oriented. It grants you the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life and apply your knowledge for their benefit.

After that meeting with my advisor, the more I pondered a path in dentistry, the more it appealed to me. I knew, as everybody does, the trepidation that many people feel during a trip to the dentist’s office. “Why does it have to be that way?” I wondered. After all, I always liked my family dentist. I realized that dentistry could afford me a unique opportunity — to bring a human touch into the often impersonal medical field. Ever since then, it’s been my mission to provide not only the highest quality of dental services but to ensure that every patient feels surrounded by friendly, engaging people that truly care about them. I finished my undergraduate studies at Columbia, attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and spent an enlightening three-year stint in the U.S.Army Dental Corps. Eventually, after working as an associate at a couple of different private practices, I took over the practice of a retiring dentist in 1989, and I haven’t looked back. I love doing diagnosis and treatment, but it’s the personal aspects of dentistry that make it all worthwhile to me. I strive to create a fantastic dental experience for all of our patients. My team and my patients are my second family. At our office, we really roll out the red carpet for our patients. Every new patient gets a gift and a tour of the office. More often than not, they’ll also get a personal call from me the night before, checking in with them, thanking them for joining us, and making sure they know they’re in good hands. We do whatever we can to make it clear that our practice is a special, caring place, even going so far as to bake chocolate chip cookies in our reception area so that the office always smells welcoming.

We do whatever we can to make it clear that our practice is a special, caring place, even going so far as to bake chocolate chip cookies in our reception area so that the office always smells welcoming.

I’m usually the last person a new patient meets in the office, after the administrative staff, the assistant, and the hygienist. By the time I sit down with them, if they’re not absolutely raving about how ours is the best dental office they’ve ever been in, I feel like we’ve missed something. Our primary core value at Nathanson Dental is to always put the patient’s interests first. It’s truly a privilege to be able to serve each and every person that comes through our doors. Dentistry wasn’t always my plan, but I’m incredibly thankful that, every morning, I get to wake up and come into a beautiful, modern office steeped in the aroma of freshly baked cookies, ready to provide benefits that can help our patients achieve a lifetime of good health and great-looking smiles. - Dr. Joel Nathanson

When I began my undergraduate studies at Columbia University in NewYork, it was an easy decision to choose the pre-med course of studies. But one day, sitting in my advisor’s office, a poster caught my eye. It beckoned students interested in volunteering at the dental school.A career in dentistry had run through my mind in the past, but until that moment it had never been something I had fully considered.

Summer Reading for Busy Families

Audiobooks Inspire a Love of Stories in All Ages

Summer reading lists are always popular, but most families rarely have time to have dinner together, let alone sit still reading for hours. Luckily, the ever-growing popularity of audiobooks means you don’t have to wait for school to start again for your kids to get back into literature. Here are a few great audiobooks you can introduce to your family this summer. For the Long Road Trip “The Bad Beginning” (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket, read by Tim Curry When a terrible fire destroys the Baudelaire mansion,Violet, Klaus, and Sunny find themselves orphans and are sent to live with the terrible Count Olaf. Convinced their awful new guardian is only after their fortune, the Baudelaires must use their

intelligence and skills to stick together and (maybe) overcome their sad circumstances. Fans of the Netflix series will love to hear the story that started it all! Who knew such an unfortunate series could mean fun for the whole family? For Family Bonding “Half Magic” by Edward Eager, read byWords TakeWing A beloved family favorite since it was first published in 1954,“Half Magic” tells the story of siblings Jane, Mark, Katharine, and Martha, who discover a magic wish- granting coin. They soon realize the coin only grants half of what they wish for, and an unplanned vacation to the Sahara, followed by chaos in King Arthur’s court, is just a one of the hilarious misadventures this family must overcome together. For Something Entirely New “TheWild Robot” by Peter Brown, read by Kate Atwater When lonely robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she finds she’s trapped on a wild island. Struggling to survive and befriend the island’s hostile animal inhabitants, Roz must eventually face her mysterious past, which threatens to tear her home apart. This brand-new book is a stunning tale about the environment, technology, and the wonder of being alive.

These are just a few of the many titles your family can enjoy this summer. Find even more by visiting Audible.com or checking the audiobooks catalogue on iTunes.

The Best Decision I’ve Ever Made Meet Katie, This Month’s Employee Spotlight

Sometimes, you need to take the wrong path in order to find the right one.A couple years back, after I’d spent some time pursuing a dental assistant degree, I felt uncertain about my career path and switched majors. For a minute, electro-neuro seemed more interesting, and I figured EKG testing would be a good, solid way to make a living. It didn’t take me long to realize the problem with my decision: An electro-neuro degree wouldn’t give me the opportunity to work directly with patients. I began to pine for the face-to-face contact that’s such a significant part of dental work, eventually becoming fed up and moving back into the field. Soon after graduating, I was hired at Nathanson Dental as a dental assistant, and I can say confidently that there hasn’t been a moment of regret about my decision to re-enter the dental profession. Going to the dentist can be a traumatic experience, especially for very young children. I love being able to be a part of the team that makes the process as personable and comfortable as possible. Not only that, but dentistry

offers the opportunity to truly impact people’s lives. We have patients who come in with a problem and leave our office feeling 10 times better. Really though, it’s the team I get to work alongside that makes it all worth it. Everything flows seamlessly in the office. If I look at a packed schedule in the morning, I freak out for maybe a second and then remember all the incredible people that have my back, and the worry melts away. Outside of the office, I love spending time with my friends, my boyfriend, and our three-year-old husky. The dog, especially, keeps me busy; I joke that having a husky in the house is like having five little kids running around. Entering back into the dental profession was one of the best decisions of my life. I’m looking forward to becoming a certified dental hygienist in the coming years, as well as the years to come at Nathanson Dental!

It’s Whitening Month at Nathanson Dental!

July 1st - September 31st

Do you hide your teeth behind your lips when you smile? When you see your grin in a Facebook picture, do you cringe? Are you constantly aware of your off-color teeth?

You’re not alone. Discolored teeth are a problem affecting millions of Americans. Luckily, a solution is easily within reach. If you wish those pearly whites could be just a little — or a lot — more pearly, it’s time to consider teeth whitening. There are dozens of over-the-counter solutions available. Unfortunately, many fall short of their lofty promises. Certain whitening toothpastes can even damage your teeth over the long term. The safest and most effective whitening methods are those prescribed by your dentist. If you’re on a time crunch and need to look your best for a big upcoming wedding or high school reunion, an in-office whitening is there for you. The entire session takes just 90 minutes and you’ll see results as soon as you walk out the door. Custom whitening trays are another option offered at Nathanson Dental. After a thorough examination and cleaning, your dentist takes an impression of your teeth and creates a customized whitening tray. Your dentist will also select the best whitening solution for your teeth. You’ll be able to whiten your teeth at home by wearing the trays around four hours a day for one to two weeks, depending on your case. If you’re not sure if you have the temperament to wear whitening trays consistently, consider the ZoomWhitening Pen. It’s free to all new patients with their first dental hygiene visit, which includes an exam, cleaning, X-rays, and fluoride. Don’t let yellowed teeth control your confidence, your appearance, and your life. Ask us about Smiles for Life, in-office and take-home whitening options with 100 percent of proceeds donated to Casey Cares Foundation, a local Baltimore charity helping terminally ill children and their families plan fun events to ease the stress of treatments.

Anniversary This month, we’re excited to announce the 4 th anniversary of Nathanson Dental at its current location. We know that without all of you, our practice couldn’t exist. For the entire week, anyone who stops by our office will get a free goody bag, a spin on the prize wheel, and on June 26, free food — tasty Chick-fil-A served all day. Bring a friend to the festivities and receive a tote bag as well! Our patients are the best in the world. Swing on by June 26-30 and let us shower you with appreciation — because you deserve it!

Traveling With Kids in 2017

Goodbye Backseat Breakdowns

If you’re traveling with young kids this year, you want to focus on what really counts — spending a few relaxing days away. Let us help you minimize the stress with the help of these simple tips. Pack smart. When packing your kids’ luggage, make sure the kiddos have everything they need, but don’t overpack. Unfortunately, this may mean having to play the bad guy when kids want to bring their entire toy arsenal on the plane. The last thing you want to hear when you’re running through the airport is that someone is struggling with their bag. Make sure the bag is easy for them to handle and that each item is essential. Use apps. If space is an issue, bringing a tablet or phone with downloaded games is much easier than carrying a variety of books and games along for the ride. You can still limit your child’s time on the device, but for long airport wait times or car rides, such a

distraction can be the difference between breezy and breakdown. Educational games, songs, and videos can be downloaded before the trip to save you from any extra stress in transit. Give them a say. Keep your kids interested in the journey by letting them be a part of it! Show them the path you’ll be taking, tell them about where you’re going, and let them document the adventures you have by photographing the whole thing. They’ll be more excited about the destination and more actively involved in how you get there. If you take public transportation, let them have a seat by the window, and ask them about the people and places you see outside. Traveling with kids isn’t easy at any time of the year, but 2017 offers the chance to take family travel to the next level of relaxation.Whatever you do, remember to stay calm and focus on the memories. You’ve got this.
