HOWTO RAISE HEALTHY CHILDREN The Secret You May Not Know

I get asked a lot of questions every day, but there are a few that stand out among the rest. One of the most common comes from curious, well-meaning parents. They want to know how they can best instill good habits in their children. After all, it’s only natural for parents to want to do all they can to help their children have a nice, enjoyable life, and if there are any “industry secrets” they can deploy, why not try? But my answer to this question isn’t so much a tactic or a lesson they can give to their children. Instead, it’s a requirement for their own well-being. If you want to raise healthy children who learn the value of caring for their bodies and how to do so properly, you have to do this yourself. Children are more likely to copy our

no longer serve us. In addition to answering plenty of questions each day, I often find myself helping patients correct deep-seated habits — habits that have become second nature.

“If you want to raise healthy children who learn the value of caring for their bodies and how to do so properly, you have to do this yourself.”

You can break these habits. It won’t always be easy, and you may slip up. But you have to examine what makes you slip up. If you have a habit of overeating one day and eating normally the next, what is it about the first day that made you eat too much? Were you stressed? Did you receive emotional news? Were you just bored? Whatever it is, finding the source or signal for this bad habit allows you to address it.

everyday actions than listen to anything we tell them. Sure, our lectures and reminders become the voices our children hear like daily reminders in their minds, but it’s our actions, the way we show up for our families, the way we practice our faith, and the habits we adhere to that leave the biggest impact.

If you don’t take care of your bad habits now, you may pay the price in 10 or 15 years. And your children could learn the very habits you are trying to teach against. The first step is to be aware of these habits, then you have to address them, then you have to ensure you create a life that prevents you from falling back into it.

Think about it this way: If you cook or do a certain chore around the house, where did you learn how to do that? It’s very likely you watched your mother chop her carrots a certain way, or you saw your father splitting wood using a technique you do today. They may have verbally taught you how to do this, but you likely also watched them do these actions over and over and over again. And it’s possible they did the same with their parents. What our parents do becomes what we do. Along that same idea, it’s valuable to identify the habits we learned from our parents or by our own doing that may not be healthy or

When you can do that, or actively try to do that, you will raise children who are healthy and happy.

If you would like additional guidance, or if you need professional support and coaching to help overcome an unhealthy habit, I can help. I have experience guiding patients through these very issues every single day. Please call 1-877-861- 5927 to schedule a consultation.

IT’S MORE THAN JUST TIDYING UP

4 HEALTH BENEFITS OF SPRING-CLEANING

Sunday, March 20, is the first day of spring — which means it’s time for some spring-cleaning. Did you know that cleaning is not just about tidying up a physical space? It’s also about improving overall

anything that’s used often is one way to reduce the spread of germs. By keeping household surfaces clean, we help thwart the spread of viruses and illnesses.

well-being. Here’s how organization and cleanliness can help you in more ways than you might expect. Spring-cleaning reduces stress and depression. Tidiness and mental health are actually connected. Studies have found that having a clean home is directly correlated to happiness and your ability to focus. Anxiety can spike when laundry is piling up, items are strewn everywhere, and papers get scattered on various surfaces within the home. Clearing the clutter is a great way to boost your mood and increase those feel-good hormones.

Spring-cleaning helps you breathe better. Spring often brings pollen that triggers allergies for many. But pollen isn’t the only thing to blame when people have difficulty breathing. When dust and pet dander build up in your home, your respiratory system is greatly affected too. Deep-cleaning your air filters and vents can make breathing effortless — and it’s truly amazing how this can improve your well-being.

It keeps you more active. Off the couch and on your feet! Even just

running the vacuum and clearing the clutter from the dining room table will get you up and moving, which is healthy for your heart and body.

It prevents illnesses. Doorknobs, refrigerator handles, light switches, countertops, and remote controls are all things we touch many times a day. Cleaning

This spring season, putting some elbow grease into your cleaning will benefit you in more ways than one. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!

UNLOCKING GREAT NUTRITION The Secret to Nutrition May Not Be in Food

Proper nutrition isn’t always easy. In a perfect world, you can get all the dietary nutrients your body needs to sustain your life and keep you healthy. As Harvard Medical School reports, most adults should get the nutrients they need to sustain a quality, healthy life.

the sun is less prevalent and hangs lower in the sky during winter. Colder temperatures and snowstorms also make it difficult to get outside.

But it may not be that simple.

Without supplementing with vitamin D each winter — at least — we run the risk of blocking all the necessary functions we rely on vitamin D for; we cannot get enough of this necessary nutrient with a diet alone. The same is true for nutrients like magnesium, which helps with sleep; fish oil, which can provide necessary protection for the heart; and many other vitamins. The key to supplementing correctly is to get guidance from a trained professional. As someone who regularly takes supplements and coaches patients on the proper supplements to take, Dr. Sladic has the experience, expertise, and empathy to help you find the correct supplementation regimen. Call 1-877-861-5927 to cash in on this true secret to nutrition success.

The truth is supplementation is a necessary part of every diet. For those with chronic conditions, supplementation provides protection from fatigue, pain, nausea, and other signs of low nutrient intake. And though what we choose to fuel our bodies with can go a long way, we may need a boost. This is where supplements come in. For instance, vitamin D supplements are necessary for those who live in colder climates. We rely on vitamin D for a litany of traits, including boosting our immune system, stimulating good bone health, and inducing good feelings. And in the winter, our source is ravaged. We get 90% of our vitamin D from the sun, and

STAY ACTIVE AS A FAMILY! Ideas to Make Exercise Fun

As Dr. Sladic covered in his cover article this month, our children learn how to be healthy by watching us. So, when it comes to teaching the value of regular exercise, why not get the whole family involved? Here are some easy ideas to do just that! Go for a hike or a walk. It doesn’t have to be complex! Choose your favorite park or a wooded area, and explore nature as a family. You’ll enjoy quality time outside, and your heart will appreciate this easy cardiovascular exercise. If you don’t want to travel too far, simply walk outside your door, and stroll through the neighborhood. You can make this task a little more fun by baking a treat for your neighbors and walking it over! Ride your bike. Make evening bike rides part of your family’s wellness routine. Choose a route and see if you can improve your time. Or, choose a new park to explore every Saturday afternoon. You could also swap out your standard vehicle with your bike for some of your errands, ensuring the whole family gets some exercise while the chores get done. Whatever you choose to do, biking is a great way to do it. It’s low impact, provides work for your heart, and it’s easy for almost anyone to do. Make it a competition. Fuel some competitive spirit! Each week, make it a contest to see who can do the most jumping jacks, crunches, “x jumps,” squats, and other exercises in two minutes. Or, log your miles after every hike and bike ride to see who went the farthest that month. (This works best if you don’t ride or walk together!) At the end of the competition, let the victor choose a treat for dessert, a special meal for supper, or a nice prize the whole family wants. Staying active is a valuable part of a healthy lifestyle, but if pain and immobility are limiting your opportunities for wellness with your family, Dr. Sladic can help. 4. Enjoy Spring Weather — Even FromWork

SPRING FEVER Enjoy WarmWeather While Stuck Indoors

The weather is warming up, the sun is out — and you’re trapped inside. Most of us have jobs that leave us stuck indoors during spring’s prime midday hours, and it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out on the season’s best parts. Unfortunately, your boss probably won’t give you the day off just because of the gorgeous weather. So, we’ve compiled the next best thing — some tips to enjoy the season as much as you can while also getting your job done. Bring the outdoors in. When the weather is nice, open as many curtains and blinds as possible. The natural light will warm up the room and brighten your mood. While you’re at it, try opening the windows and positioning yourself near one. If you can’t be outside, the spring breeze on your face is the next best thing. Plants decrease stress, and having them on your desk might also trick your brain into feeling less cooped up. Take a break. You’ve still got to work, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sneak in a few minutes outdoors. Use your break for an outdoor stroll; if possible, you can also walk or bike to work. At the very

least, park farther away to give yourself time to enjoy the weather. Volunteer to do a coffee run, pick up lunch, or take out the mail — you’ll be an office hero while catching some rays at the same time. Try working outside. If your boss will allow it, there’s probably some opportunity to do a bit of work outdoors. Meetings and conference calls might offer your best option. For in-person meetings, your coworkers will also likely relish a chance to take it outdoors. In the event of a conference call, you won’t need to convince anyone else — grab your laptop and go! It’s not the same as enjoying the weather while you’re off the clock, but it’s a lot better than being cooped up inside.

With any luck, these tips will help you make it to Friday with your sanity intact. And luckily, the weekend is always just around the corner.
