JUNE 2018
BULLETIN
s of May 23, we’re in the second month with our new twins, little Michele Stella Russo and Michael Dean Russo. Lisa’s C-section went as well as we could have hoped, and the twins are at home with us, safe and sound, eating like crazy, thriving, and gaining weight just like they’re supposed to. Meanwhile, Lisa is recovering like the champion she is. I’m constantly amazed by her ability to juggle everything at once while being the best mother in the world for our kids. To say it’s been a hectic couple of months would be the understatement of the century, but regardless of the chaos, I’m lit up with that incredible feeling that comes every time a new child enters our world — this time multiplied by two! Right now, I’m just so thankful that the entire process has gone as smoothly as possible, despite the kids arriving earlier than we’d expected. The twins are still sleeping in our room in the bassinet, but soon we’ll be transitioning them to the nursery, where everything is perfectly set up to accommodate Lisa’s and their needs. People keep asking me how I’m managing four kids at home (two of them newborns), opening our new New Jersey Institute of Balance location, and continuing to see patients full-time. To be honest, I have no idea! It just kind of happens. When I wake up in the morning, I set my goals for the day, determine exactly what needs to be done, and get to work — that’s basically the whole game. As much as I can, I stay on some semblance of a schedule, trying to maintain as much of a sense of Michael & Michele Moving Into the Second Month With the Twins A
normalcy within the family as possible. So far, luckily, this strategy seems to be working!
I’m also happy that our other kids, Jack and Lia Grace, have been totally thrilled to have a new brother and sister. Lia Grace, 7, is taking on the role of mommy whenever she can, holding the babies and helping feed them. Jack, 2, is starting to fully grasp just what these new additions to the family mean for him, and he’s eager to play, though he’s just learning how to not be so rough with his new brother and sister. The other day, he looked over and said, “Look! I’m doing nice!”while he was just kind of lightly smacking them in the head — he’s still on that learning curve for how to treat a baby. But it’s been really, really cool to see how he evolves along with the infants; it’s a whole new world for him. All in all, it’s an absolutely unreal experience. It’s difficult to express just how it feels to have more kids in the house, but whenever I’m reminded of that fact or come home to a newly full apartment, I’m overwhelmed with this awesome rush of emotion. I’m so excited to watch Michele and Michael grow and learn alongside each of us.

Charcoal and Dutch Ovens The Perfect Camp-Cooking Pair
For breakfast, prepare a hash with bacon, eggs, onions, potatoes, cheese, salt, and pepper. For lunch, try cooking campfire nachos with tortilla chips, ground beef, beans, onions, cilantro, cheese, and avocado. And for dinner, butterfly your freshly caught trout and bake it with some potatoes and butter. Cooking while camping should be an enjoyable experience. Pack a Dutch oven and charcoal briquettes the next time you’re out in the wilderness to add a fun and rustic element to your meals.
Camping doesn’t have to mean settling for prepackaged snacks, dehydrated meals, and
boring hot dogs. In fact, cooking during your camping trip can be fun, easy, and incredibly tasty. One of the simplest ways to prepare camp meals is with a Dutch oven and charcoal. Like crockpots, Dutch oven meals require very little work and dirty few dishes. Best of all, you can add an endless variety of food to your camp menu! The briquettes around the Dutch oven provide long-lasting and consistent heat distribution. The number of briquettes you use depends on the size of your Dutch oven and what you’re cooking. However, you can use the following chart as a rule of thumb to determine how many briquettes you need for certain temperatures and oven sizes. Cooking with a Dutch oven is as simple as combining your ingredients, heating your briquettes, and placing them beneath and on top of your oven. Each briquette adds 10–20 degrees of heat.

HOW PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP RUNNERS
Now that summer is in full swing all over New Jersey, it seems like everybody is getting out and going for a jog. Running and walking are certainly both great ways to stay in shape and get a little exercise, but they can also occasionally lead to some pretty serious injuries. If you’re an avid runner, you probably already know how frustrating it feels to be couch-bound by a nasty flare-up of pain. A Powerful Tool for Recovery
That’s the bad news. The good news is that most running injuries are treatable with a round of physical therapy.
Take plantar fasciitis , for example. This injury occurs when the thick band of connective tissue between your heel and your toes becomes irritated, inflamed, or in the worst cases, torn. Most of the time, the injury won’t bother sufferers all day long, instead flaring up when patients first jump out of bed in the morning or take the first steps after an extended period of sitting at the computer. Then there’s runner’s knee , a condition that has plagued joggers and competitive athletes since time immemorial. Runner’s knee can flare up as the result of strength imbalances, flexibility issues, or overtraining, but it generally manifests as pain in the front of the knee. This pain can be a dull ache or a stabbing sensation, as components in the kneecap become misaligned from the femoral groove. Pain is typically worst after going up hills or stairs, going for a jog, or again, after sitting down for a long time.
These are only two of the most common injuries runners suffer from. There are a whole host of others that come from all kinds of imbalances in the body, but nearly all of them can be addressed through physical therapy. After scheduling a consultation with us, you’ll come in and we’ll break down your particular injury, running you through a few tests to determine the exact nature of your issue. Then we’ll set you up with a detailed exercise and treatment plan to steadily heal your injury and get you back to running before you know it. Don’t let injury keep you from doing what you love. Fathers Who Put Their Lives on the Line for Their Kids
onto its back and started punching it in the face. When the bear finally released Gabriel, Greg threw rocks until it fled. His son was hurt but made a full recovery in the hospital over the coming weeks.
This Father’s Day, thousands of dads will receive a “No. 1 Dad” mug to sip coffee out of at the office. But the following dads took that “No. 1” to a new level.
Artur Magomedov saved his daughters from ISIS.
Brian Munn gave his son a liver transplant.
When doctors discovered that baby Caleb Munn had a rare disease called biliary atresia, they told his parents that he was unlikely to survive past age 2 without a liver transplant. Luckily, his father was a perfect match, and he eagerly donated part of his liver in March of 2015 to save his son’s life.
Artur Magomedov was devastated to discover that his wife had taken his 3- and 10-year-old daughters from their home in Dagestan under the cover of night, flown to Turkey, and crossed into Syria to join ISIS. But he resolved to get his kids back. After a long, hazardous journey, he arrived in Tabqa to embrace his two daughters. To leave the caliphate — under penalty of death — they hitched a ride to the border one night and crawled along a railway line until they were within 70 meters of the border. Then they ran under fire from Turkish border guards until they could scramble into tall grasses. After some help from the Russian consulate in Istanbul, they made it back home, together again and safe.
Greg Alexander battled a bear for his son’s life.
While camping in the backcountry of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Greg Alexander was startled awake at dawn by the screams of his 16-year-old son, Gabriel. He rushed out of his hammock to see a black bear dragging his son away by the head. Without hesitation, he kicked the beast in the side, and when that didn’t work, he leapt
