Architectural Philosophy
6
Newberry Architecture is client-centered, first and foremost.
The design process can be complex and intimidating. Newberry ensures clients are part of every discussion and decision along the way, and that you are not just heard but also truly understood. Because your project is about you.
“ARCHITECTURE IS A BLEND OR A COMBINATION BETWEEN FORM, SKILL AND LIFE. I THINK A BIGGER EMPHASIS IN THE LIFE ASPECT ON THE HUMAN ASPECT OF IT AND PERSONALIZING IT IN THAT CREATION.”
- Jorge Carranza, Principal

ARCHITECTURAL PHILOSOPHY
When you walk into a home, you can feel it: the energy that went into designing and building it. Our goal is to help create a better world by creating spaces that make people feel positive and good. Then those people can go on to share that positive energy with the other people they’re in touch with throughout the day. It’s a ripple effect. And it all starts with how you feel in your home. How you feel when you wake up every morning. The memories you make with your family and friends in a home created out of love.
8
“YOU NEED TO GET TO THE CORE OF WHAT THEY WANT. YOU HAVE TO KNOW THE RIGHT QUESTIONS TO ASK: WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THIS? WHAT DO YOU NOT LIKE ABOUT THAT? THEN YOU EXTRAPOLATE FROM WHAT THEY SAY AND CREATE SOMETHING THAT REFLECTS THEIR THINKING. YOU REALLY DO HAVE TO LISTEN BETWEEN THE LINES, BECAUSE THE PROJECT IS ALL ABOUT THE CLIENT.”
- Clint Johnson, Principal

“I LOVE KNOWING THAT I CAN AFFECT PEOPLE’S LIVES POSITIVELY — FROM THE MOMENT THEY WAKE UP IN THE MORNING UNTIL THEY GO TO SLEEP AT NIGHT, BEING A GOOD MOTHER, FATHER, BROTHER OR SISTER — BECAUSE OF THE ARCHITECTURE AROUND THEM.” - Ken Newberry, Principal

The San Felipe Condo embodies Newberry’s philosophy. The client hired multiple architects to create designs for a large condo space, with the goals to showcase their art collection and work around challenging plumbing locations that could not be moved. Newberry was awarded the project thanks to an impeccable floor plan with great circulation that above all met the clients’ needs.

Process
Get to know the clients and build trust and comfort. This means tons of questions and a lot of listening.
STEP 1
Outline the entire project to discuss and amend until it’s absolutely perfect. The project will continue to evolve, as needed, throughout the process.
STEP 2
Create various presentations of the design, from hand sketches to AutoCAD drawings.
STEP 3
Begin construction. Newberry can help select a contractor, consultants, interior designers and more.
STEP 4
14
Drawings for large projects can typically be completed in six months. Construction depends on the size and specifics of the building.

“WE PUT A LOT OF IMPORTANCE IN COMMUNICATION. WE TALK TO CLIENTS CONSTANTLY TO MAKE SURE WE KNOW WHAT THEY’RE THINKING AND FEELING. WE DO THE SAME INTERNALLY. DESIGN DOESN’T HAPPEN IN A COUPLE OF DAYS, IT TAKES TIME. SO WE MEET ABOUT DRAWINGS AND SKETCHES, AND WE DO THEM OVER AND OVER UNTIL WE HAVE THE BEST DESIGN AND IT REFLECTS WHAT THE CLIENT SEES.”
- Jorge Carranza, Principal

COMMERCIAL & BEYOND
This corporate retreat in Texas was designed to look like a Greek village. It includes a chapel, four guesthouses, a main house, a wine room to house 10,000-plus bottles of wine and multiple buildings that seamlessly flow together and make you feel like you’ve been transported across the globe.
It blends the style of the husband, from Greece, and his wife, a devout Christian.
This retreat is used for fundraisers, corporate events and family.

RESIDENTIAL
This beachfront property on Ambergris Caye Island in Belize was built for a major fishing family. Every wall in this five-bedroom, five-bath house is concrete.
22
This Urban Country Estate was a ground-up project that incorporated an expansive backyard and a large garage for oversized vehicles. The challenge was to design a house that wrapped around the pool and yard, while maintaining mountain views from many different rooms.

Our Team remodeled this entire terrace to have a Spanish/Mediterranean style. They flattened out multiple levels, removed columns and redid the pool, hot tub and landscaping, as well as added a pool pavilion.

AFTER
This was an extensive remodel of a mountain home in Telluride, Colorado. Newberry Architecture made the back wall glass to frame the natural views. The whole kitchen was revamped, from drawers to hood, and so were the rooms upstairs.

“I HAVE A NATURAL DESIRE FOR CHANGING AND IMPROVING PEOPLE’S LIVES. IF YOU HAVE THE TALENT AND ABILITY TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN, THEN I BELIEVE YOU HAVE A MORAL OBLIGATION TO DO IT.” - Ken Newberry

This modern house with a pool was a new build. Newberry Architecture also did all the interior finish work: cabinets, stone work, tiles, all of the finishes.
35
This urban farmhouse was a new build for a client with eclectic taste. The Newberry team traveled to the East Coast with the clients to help select elements for the house even before the design process began. The house was designed to showcase the residents’ unique style and fill the spacious property. Look closely inside; it’s unlike anything else!

This home was a total remodel that included adding a garage and converting the previous garage space into more bedrooms, bathrooms and a game room. The inspiration: The client’s childhood, spending summers at the lake. They wanted to create a space for their children to grow up in nature near water — to make their own lake memories.

The millwork details throughout the house were client-specific, so the Newberry Architecture team worked closely with the client and interior designer to get everything just right.
The amount of glass this home has facing the lake accentuates the great location and provides beautiful natural light.

Who We Are

WHO WE ARE
Each Principal at Newberry Architecture has played a vital role in creating and maintaining the firm’s high standards for designing projects that transform what our clients envision into architectural realities.
88
THE PRINCIPALS
A good architect can bring a client’s vision to life, better than they ever envisioned. But a great architect can profoundly improve the quality of a client’s life, and in that, contribute to improving the greater world. That’s Ken Newberry. His passion and purpose is evident in everything he says and does, from his impressive education to the scope of his work — from small but mighty remodels to multi-million-dollar mansion new builds, and everything in between. He has extensive experience in custom residential, commercial, restaurant and retail architecture; you name it. And his consistent exceptional quality and communication has helped earn the firm its
his progressive use of traditional and modern construction materials. He is a licensed architect in Colorado, Maine, Montana, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. But beyond his resume, Ken values making extraordinary collaborations with other professionals, from interior designers to real estate agents — and it’s also his highest priority to collaborate closely with clients. That’s the key to excellence: a team commitment to pursuing and creating the highest possible level of design. Ken’s commitment to improving the lives of others can also be seen in his philanthropy work. He is a founding board member of Starfish Kenya and has also worked with the Texas chapter of Boys to Men, the AIDS Foundation and World AIDS Day. Ken is currently serving on the Board of Justice Forward.

was drawn to figuring out how things work, taking things apart and reassembling them to understand firsthand how multiple pieces come together. That fascination continues to fuel his work today, with his unique knowledge of many different facets of the design and building process. Clint not only can see the greater picture, but he also understands each brush stroke needed to create it. With Newberry Architecture, a vital piece of that process is connecting deeply with clients and the entire team, understanding the importance of each individual role while knowing how to lead others to success and ultimately satisfaction. Clint’s hunger for knowledge and growth led him to earn a degree in interior design from the University of Houston. He worked for an architecture firm in college and was a highly sought-after freelancer, before Newberry was fortunate to welcome him to their strong team in 2003. His use of human scale to determine form and functionality, as well as his integration of landscaping with architecture to connect building with context, has been a hallmark of his work — which spans everything from intimate, small-scale projects to sprawling, multi-million-dollar mansions. Both sizes of projects inform the success of the other.
“BIG PROJECTS ALLOW MORE TIME TO COME UP WITH GOOD SOLUTIONS THAT ARE UNIQUE. WE CAN APPLY THOSE TECHNIQUES TO SMALLER PROJECTS, EVEN WITH SIZE LIMITATIONS,” HE SAYS. “WITH SMALL PROJECTS, WE HAVE TO COME UP WITH UNIQUE SOLUTIONS, DUE TO LIMITED SQUARE FOOTAGE AND TIME, AND THAT CAN HELP US UNDERSTAND POTENTIAL TECHNICAL CONSTRAINTS IN LARGER PROJECTS.” - Clint Johnson
CLINT JOHNSON
Architecture is in Clint Johnson’s blood; he was born to do this — and he has followed those deep roots all the way to the top. Clint’s father was a homebuilder and his mother an interior designer. Through a lifetime of education, devotion to the craft and hard work, he grew into a brilliant fusion of both of their skill sets. Building has been a part of Clint from day one. Even as a child, he

opportunities. That nonprofit continues to thrive today. Jorge’s hands-on knowledge of construction methods and building materials, coupled with a love and strength for architectural detailing, provide an outstanding foundation that helps him manage everything from garage renovations to multi-million-dollar projects. His vast commercial experience helps Jorge lead Newberry’s commercial and special projects, from cafes to churches to hospitality projects. Jorge is a master of creating different processes, protocols and streamlining function and efficiency. His ultimate goal: to elevate the experience every client has with Newberry. With an eye always on community, Jorge also volunteers with the engineering nonprofit he founded, as well as with the Houston Food Bank, the Justice Foundation, the Houston AIA Kids and Architecture program and AIDS Foundation Houston.
Jorge grew up with his father on construction sites. By 17, while still in high school, a highly motivated Jorge taught himself how to draft and secured a position at a residential interior design firm. There, he taught himself how to use computer-assisted design programs and quickly worked his way up to managing the company’s CAD operators. Before long, Jorge was overseeing operations for the entire 80-person firm. Jorge would later go on to join an international company as its liaison with global clients, before joining Newberry in 2007 as a senior design associate. He worked hard and produced exceptional results that led to multiple promotions, and ultimately, the esteem of becoming a Principal in 2015. That’s just the beginning of the drive and fire that fuels Jorge Carranza. He has always gone above and beyond; while earning his structural analysis engineering degree at the University of Houston (and graduating magna cum laude), he founded an organization that connects engineering students with real-world
JORGE CARRANZA
Jorge Carranza was always ahead of the game. And that unique, passion-fueled headstart sent him on a trajectory for incredible success in architecture.
