RECIPE ROUNDUP

Winter Car Care TIPS & TRICKS ~ Craig Bricco (IT, NSGL)

• Keep fuel tank full so there is minimal condensation. • Get regular oil changes to minimize engine wear. • Don’t rev your engine when first starting below freezing - just let it idle a few minutes before taking off so the thick oil has a chance to circulate. • Help to keep your battery charged by checking the terminals and keep them clean and tight. Check to ensure alternator belt is tight and not frayed or worn. • Keep a cold weather kit in the vehicle with blanket, a candle, maybe a snack just in case.

• 2 blocks Philadelphia cream cheese • 1 block of Velveeta cheese • 2 cans condensed cream of celery • 2 bags chopped up pepperoni Put all ingredients in a crock pot, set on low and simmer until all ingredients are melted. Mix thoroughly and serve with tortilla chips. Tried & true dishes from N94! Pepperoni Dip ~ Lynn Burger (AC)

• 1 ¾ cups boiling water • 1 cup uncooked oatmeal • 1 cup brown sugar, lightly packed • 1 cup white sugar • 8 Tbsp. butter • 2 large eggs • 1 ¾ cups unsifted flour • 1 tsp. baking soda • ½ tsp. salt • 1 Tbsp. cocoa • 12-oz pkg. chocolate chips • ¾ cup chopped walnuts (optional) Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cake ~ Kim Cain (AC)

GOOD EATS! Area Restaurant Reviews from N94 Staff

The Rustic Spoon 1658 Pleasure House Rd., Va. Beach, VA 23455

We had dinner there on Wednesday, November 25th and it was FANTASTIC!!! Friendly and helpful staff and the food is definitely FIVE STARS!! The Scotch Egg is so good we had to order a second and the Rustic Fries are absolutely delicious, reminiscent of a savory Poutine but with a Rustic twist! My kids had the Carnitas Hash... you could tell they loved it because they were actually quiet. I had the Shrimp & Grit Cake and the only thing missing was a serving spoon to shovel it into my mouth ... fantastic!!

1. Pour boiling water over oatmeal in large bowl. Let stand at room temperature for 10 minutes. Add sugars, butter, and stir until butter has melted. Add eggs and mix well. 2. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and cocoa. Add flour mixture to batter and mix well. Fold in ½ of chocolate chips. 3. Pour batter into greased and floured 9”x13” baking pan. Sprinkle with remaining chocolate chips and walnuts. 4. Bake at 350 for about 40 minutes.

Oh, and don’t pass up dessert. If you like peanut butter pie, you’ll find THE VERY DEFINITION OF DELICIOUS here!!! You’ve GOT to try this place. Pop in for apps and a few drinks or stay for dinner ... you won’t be disappointed!!!

HEALTH CORNER

INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS A Gaelic Blessing May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. ~ Pearl Wright (AC) A Motivational Quote ~ Krystal Wilson (AC) If you can’t change a situation, then change your perception of it. Always remember that most of our stress comes from the way we respond, and not the way life is. (author unknown)

Many people may have experienced more stress than usual as the pandemic may have altered our holiday and travel plans this past season. Below are a few suggestions for how to deal with stress in healthy ways:

• Strengthen positive connections. Rely on positive people for help and support. This may include family and/or friends. If you are feeling lonely, reach out to friends using the phone or a virtual application. Connect using technology and make use of your social network. • Set aside 15 minutes for yourself every day. It is important to focus on our own needs and feelings. Focus on doing something that you enjoy such as going for a walk, listening to music or reading a magazine. • Set realistic expectations. Identify what is important to you and focus on those tasks. Understand that you may not get everything done and be flexible about making changes to your plan. • Focus on healthy habits. Get plenty of sleep and incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Eat a diet full of nutrients; research has shown that what you eat affects the way you think and feel. Limit consumption of alcohol. • Practice gratitude. Research has shown that people who practice gratitude are happier, sleep better and enjoy healthier relationships. Try to identify three things you are thankful for on a daily basis. • Consume the news in moderation. While it is important to stay informed and up- to-date on the latest events, too much information may contribute to our stress levels. Schedule periods throughout the day to catch up with the news.
