Manager's Message
by Enrique Contreras, CCM
Dear Members,
On behalf of the staff of Seven Oaks Country Club, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a Happy Holiday and Merry Christmas, and thank you for your contribution to the employee holiday fund. 2020 has certainly been a very challenging year for everyone and we are ever so thankful for the continued support and loyalty of our members. We truly appreciate you coming to dine on the Oak Terrace, whether in 104 degree heat and smoky air this summer or now having lunch and dinner in 45 degree weather! Without you and the Board of Governors’ support, we really don’t know where the Club would be. Thank you, thank you! We had a very different Thanksgiving, from previous years. I hope everyone that attended had a good time and enjoyed their traditional feast. On December 6th, we will host Breakfast with Santa. The event will be held outdoors, and a plated breakfast will be served. We will also continue to have Friday Night Live in the month of December, weather permitting. Due to our current restrictions, we will not be hosting a big party for New Year’s Eve, but we will be serving
a special dinner. Please make your reservations with our Receptionists by calling 661-664-6404. Our fall menu is being well received by our members. Please email myself or Chef Cory, at [email protected], if you’d like to see any additional items on the menu. Due to the cold weather, Aquatic and exercise classes will be on hold through February. Thank you to the members that summited applications for the Board of Governors. There is still time to get involved in the Club by joining one of our committees; please email Eryn Urban at [email protected] for more information regarding our committees. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email me at econtreras@sevenoaks countryclub.com or give me a call. I hope that 2020 will be good to all of us and that we can go back to some sort of normalcy, and I wish you all the best for a safe and healthy New Year!

THERE IS NO SELECTION FOR DECEMBER, BUT GET A JUMP-START FOR JANUARY …
The Evening and the Morning by Ken Follet It's 1944 and sixteeen-year-old ballerina and gymnast Edith Eger is sent to Auschwitz. Separated from her parents on arrival, she endures unimaginable experiences, including being made to dance for the infamous Josef Mengele. When the camp is finally liberated, she is pulled from a pile of bodies, barely alive. The horrors of the Holocaust didn't break Edith. In fact, they helped her learn to live again with a life-affirming strength and a truly remarkable resilience. The Choice is her unforgetta- ble story. Our next meeting is JANUARY 28 at 5:00 pm ~ via ZOOM~ Please email Bee Barmann @ [email protected] to receive information on joining the meeting.

We have aerated many times to reduce the compaction caused by excessive rolling. We have also initiated frequent light fertilization, verti-cutting and light sand applications and the greens are now starting to respond very well. I am happy to inform you that we now have over five inches of roots and we should double that root depth by next June, which will allow us to keep green speeds between 11.5’-12’ on the stempmeter, year round. Roots play such a critical role in our ability to supply fantastic putting surfaces during the summer. In hot temperatures, our root system dramatically shrinks because they are constantly trying to supply the necessary water and carbohydrates (food) to the plant’s leaf blades. Many of you have seen me out on the course at four o’clock in the afternoon, giving the greens and fairways very light water applications to cool the plant down. This cooling helps reduce root shrinkage by manually supplying moisture to the leaf blade. Green Speeds Our goal is to keep the green speeds between 11.5’-12’ on the Stempmeter, as close to year-round as possible. However, there are some factors that will not allow us to keep the greens at that speed. These factors are the two weeks after Spring and Fall Aeration and plant growth. Greens will Stemp (Stempmeter) at 12’ at 6:30am but as they grow during the day, they might only Stemp at 11’ around 3:00pm. Because of this afternoon growth, we apply Growth Retardants to the greens every Thursday. These applications do not completely halt the vertical growth that slows the green down in the afternoon, but they help to minimize it, and push lateral growth that tightens the leaf blades and creates a smoother, faster putting surface.

Frost We are now in the period when Frost delays start to occur on a regular basis. I’m sure many of you have heard this before, but I’d like to take a minute to refresh everyone on why it is of great importance that we wait for the frost to melt before we allow any golf to take place. Frost is the formation of ice crystals on the grass blades. Our overnight temperatures are starting to drop into the low forties, and the coldest time of each day is right as the sun starts to rise in the morning. At sunrise, the temperatures can drop as much as three to five degrees, causing frost on areas of the course that otherwise had no frost ten minutes prior. When these ice crystals form on the plant’s leaf blades and you walk or drive on the turf, these ice crystals puncture the cell walls of the plant, causing great harm and eventual death to the plant if repeated day after day. Some might say that the Bermudagrass is dormant, so it can’t be harmed. This is not true! I do agree that Cool season grasses, like the Bent grass on our greens, are more susceptible to frost damage than dormant Bermudagrass, but both will be dramatically harmed if play is allowed during these frost periods. One interesting scenario is the use of water to remove frost quicker. We will, and do, apply very light applications of water to hasten our frost delays. The interesting part to this is that there is a very fine line betweenwater removing frost or causing more ice to form, even if the temperature is above freezing. I have witnessed ice form at 39-41 degrees before. It sounds crazy, but it has happened. The crew and I ask for your patience during these frost delays and we promise to do everything we can to get you out on the course as quickly as possible. Greens Update Our greens are starting to look, feel and play so much better than before my arrival. When I arrived on June 1st, the greens were in bad shape. They had been rolled into submission and only had a two-inch root depth. It took all my experience to nurse them through the hot summer and get to a point when we could start their recovery and improve their health and vigor.
As always, I look forward to talking to you out on the course and I hope you have a terrific Holiday season.
