From the Boardroom

Dear Seven Oaks Members,

Seven Oaks payroll related expenses will see an increase of close to 10% in 2021. In order to be good stewards of your club, the Board voted and approved an increase of dues for all classes of membership of 5% beginning with the bill you will receive in March. The Board also voted and approved to increase our capital assessment from $25 to $40 per month for all members. Raising the capital assessment is critically important to the long term success of our operations. We appreciate your support on these very important issues. Thank you for your suggestions and recommendations throughout the year.

As we move into 2021, the Board of Governors wants to thank all of the membership for their support throughout 2020. It is our goal that we continue to improve your overall experience of our club operations while remaining financially stable. During the last 12 months we have seen many positive changes in our club’s financial health and operational procedures. Under the leadership of General Manager Enrique Contreras, the Board is confident that we will continue the process of making Seven Oaks the club of choice in Bakersfield. Effective January 1, 2021, the minimum hourly wage increased over 7%. This increase doesn’t reflect other costs associated with our payroll, such as workman’s comp insurance and Social Security taxes. With all the actual costs tied to our payroll,

Sincerely, The Board of Governors

I would like to thank all of the members that ran for the Board of Governors, in the recent election. Please join me in congratulating our newest members to the Board of Governors; Mrs.Clarine Gilliam, Mr. David Mettler and Mr. Paul Miller. Thank you to the 194 members who participated in our first Basque Dinner. The evening was met with positive reviews and we will be continuing every Sunday night. One of our main goals at Seven Oaks, is to provide exceptional service to our members and anticipate their needs. If you would like to see something new or different on the menu, please let us know. We will also be including monthly recipes into the newsletter, created by Chef Corey for you to enjoy on your own and to share with friends and family.

We hope that the restrictions will be lifted soon, and that we can resume some normalcy soon. Thank you again for your continued support and loyalty... see you at the Club!

8. Walk ahead of your opponent. I know this sounds silly, but I’ve done it a lot and it sends a subtle message that you are confident and you want to get your ball in the hole quickly. Players who aren’t feeling well usually aren’t excited to play their next shot. 9. When you’re up, stay aggressive and try to increase your lead. If you are four up, don’t start thinking that all you have to do is make some pars and bleed your opponent out. Instead, try to get five or six up and end the match. NEVER get comfortable with a lead. 10. Keep your head in the game! Don’t let the match play format which you have no experience with distract you from what you have to do. Remember to hit one shot at a time and always stick to your routine.

HOW TO WIN YOUR MATCH!! 1. Look relaxed even when you’re not. Put your poker face on; always look relaxed and confident. Make your opponent see that you are not nervous. 2. Pay attention to your opponent’s nerves. Try not to make it obvious but keep an eye for signs of your opponent: shaking, can’t place ball on tee, etc. If you sense they are nervous, this should give you confidence and help you plan your strategy. 3. Give shortcuts or don’t. I’m not a big "games- manship" player but there are some players who will get rattled if you give them short putts and then suddenly don’t. There’s nothing wrong with trying to get under someone’s skin. 4. Know your opponents tendencies. Most of the time you’re going to be playing against someone for the first time. Try to get a tip on their weaknesses and their strengths. For instance, if they like to play fast and prefer to hit first, you can use that to your advantage. 5. Work with your partner! Always talk strategies over with your partner. Communicate and get your game plan straight and play to both of your strengths. If you like to hit first, SPEAK UP! If you like to hit putts, SPEAK UP! If you are with a partner who likes to be left alone; DON’T BOTHER THEM! 6. Try to get a partner who can putt under pressure. I know this is a tough one and often we do not get a chance to pick partners but if you get a chance, pick a partner who can putt, especially under pressure. Match play is about pressure and it shows up in your putting. 7. Always expect your opponent to sink the next putt or chip. Never allow yourself to be let down mentally. Always think to yourself that you already won the hole! And remember: “IT AIN’T OVER TIL IT’S OVER”!

Some have asked what our plan is to attack the winter annual weeds that are growing in the new Native

Cart traffic is killing us and it’s no one’s fault. The pandemic has increased play by thirty two percent and dramatically increased cart traffic, especially as it relates to wear and tear on the golf course. One thing that will be of tremendous help moving forward is to try to find different locations to enter and exit the fairways. What I mean is, if you see a heavily used area, please try to stay away from that area. We do move our ropes and stakes frequently, but sometimes on days of heavy play, areas can get beat down very quickly. Your help with this issue is greatly appreciated. Many thanks to those golfers who are fixing ball marks and filling your divots. I’m a little late with this next comment, but please only fill your divots in fairways and tees, not the rough.

area we seeded in November. Right now, we are waiting for the rest of the native seed to germina- te and the winter wildflowers to start to bloom. I am happy to see that a great deal of native seed germinated through December and January, which is very unusual. Once the native grasses grow to about three inches in height and the wildflowers start to bloom, we will make the necessary herbicide applications to clean the weeds up. My guess is that the plants will be able to survive an herbicide treatment in about 3 weeks. We continually spray the rough to clean up all the Perennial Ryegrass contamination from past years. At the same time, we are continuing to treat winter annual weeds that are also in the rough. As I mentioned in previous articles, this place is a weed factory. We will get an area of the course cleaned up and then a week later it looks like it was never treated! This will take a couple years to get fully resolved, but each year youwill notice amarked improvement with a major reduction of weeds, Poa and Ryegrass contamination in the roughs. Starting next week and through the end of the month, we will be making our first application of Pre-Emergent Crabgrass control, followed by a second application toward the end of April. Unlike years past, we will be treating the entire property with both applications. Every three to four months, we do what is known in the industry as a Greens Flush. We apply several products to the greens and then water them for about an hour and a half to flush toxins out of the root zone area. This is a very important program because we receive very small amounts of rain fall. If we were in a more rain producing climate, our greens would flush naturally from acid rain. The drawback to these flushes is that every time we get our root zone locked in at a solid nutrient level, its time to flush and we basically start all over with nutrient applications, so the greens don’t starve to death. It’s kind of a catch 22, but still a very important practice.
