Manager's Message

by Enrique Contreras, CCM, General Manager/COO

Happy September to all of our members! Now that the kids are back to school and summer is almost over, it is time to relax at the Club. Our Social Committee has been busy planning new items for your enjoyment that can be added to your entertainment schedule… please check your email for more information. We are continuing with our Pasta Night, Friday Night Live and Sunday Basque Dinners in addition to many exciting events coming up. It’s hard to believe, but the holidays are right around the corner! If you are looking to reserve a holiday party, please call Marie, our Catering & Events Manager at 664-6421 or email her at [email protected]. The golf course and all of the practice areas, including the driving range and putting greens, will be closed for maintenance from September 27th to October 15th. The Board of Governors has accepted the recommendations from our Director of Agronomy Tom Lipscomb regarding the over-seeding process scheduled to begin at the end of September. The announcement of the details of this process made to the membership last week has apparently stirred some controversy, so perhaps more explanation regarding this will be helpful.

First of all, since the beginnings of Seven Oaks Country Club, over-seeding with rye grass has been a key factor in creating the best winter conditions for any private golf course in our area. From November through May our course has always had green fairways and surrounds. This is truly one of the advantages to being a Seven Oaks member. At most private clubs where over-seeding is done, the club is closed for play for the entire month of October. This would apply to the better clubs in the Palm Springs or Phoenix area. Although their courses may be closed, the members are still required to pay monthly dues. In previous years, because Seven Oaks has 27 holes, we have been able to avoid a complete shutdown by closing each 9 holes for two weeks. This extended the total time to six weeks. Unfortunately, because the West 9 greens are currently being reconstructed, we only have 18 holes to play on this Winter and Spring. Rather than closing each remaining 9 holes for two weeks (four weeks total), we have decided to close all 18 holes for 3 weeks and try to accomplish a thicker and more uniform result, creating significantly better playing conditions through this Winter. When we have all 27 holes available next year, we will more than likely return to our traditional over-seeding schedule.

Seven Oaks Book Club The Seven Oaks Book Club meetseach month to discuss books on a reading listwhich is selected by mutual consent of the Book Club members. All members of SOCC are invited to attend.

Our selection for September is…

The Four Winds by Kristen Hannah The Four Winds is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it - the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. A testament to hope, resilience, and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation. Our next meeting is September 23rd at 5pm at the Club Please email Bee Barmann at [email protected] to receive information on joining the meeting.

"CHECK 6” BEFORE YOU PLAY GOLF !

Lag Putts: Practice your “real” stroke!

1. CHECK INTO THE PRO SHOP BEFORE YOU PLAY WITH YOUR GUESTS. 2. PICK UP A DIVOT FIXER TO REPAIR YOUR DIVOTS ON GREENS. 3. TUCK YOUR SHIRT IN! 4. OBSERVE CLUB RULES AND 5. REGULATIONS. 6. KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP AHEAD OF YOU.

Good lag putting can make a huge difference in your scores and I never underestimate the importance of getting the ball close to the hole from outside 20 feet. My technique is pretty simple, but it works. All I do is take a good look at the hole and make practice strokes that simulate the ones I want to use in order to roll the ball the right distance. I often see amateurs making short quick strokes before they hit long putts, which is a big mistake. Instead, always make a “real” rehearsal stroke with your eyes on the hole, and then simply re-create that stroke when you hit the putt for real.

Links News

by Tom Lipscomb, Director of Agronomy

I’m sure most have noticed the circular rings on some of the Oaks and Lakes greens; these are called Fairy Ring. There are three types of Fairy Ring; bright green rings, bright green rings with mushrooms growing in the green ring areas and bright green rings that eventually turn brown and then recover. Typically, this is caused by gasses being released from decay- ing organic matter (tree stumps, tree limbs, trash, a piece of paper or anything that will decompose) be- neath the soil surface. We have treated it four times this year; preventatively and site specific. I don’t know exactly why these areas have appeared, but I do think I have a very, very good idea. When new greens are constructed and have established grass on them, they develop a uniform layer of organic matter, over time. This uniform, natural, twelve-inch zone of organic matter is critical to the plants survival, by helping the plant retain nutrients and water uniformly. When the greens on the Original 18 were re-surfaced (not rebuilt) they were roto-tilled to a depth of eight inches, thus redistributing chunks of that natural organic zone in various areas throughout the greens mix. Now these redistributed organic chunks are decomposing and releasing gasses up to the green surface and creating these Fairy Ring areas. I hope, and feel this problem will eventually disappear on its own, but in the meantime, we will continue to monitor and treat these outbreaks both preventative- ly and site specifically.

The West Nine construction is about 85% completed and the work looks terrific. The construction company did an excellent job and is now off the property. We still have some in-house work to be completed, which should be finished up in the next two to three weeks. We hope to be seeding the West Nine greens the week of September 1st. We still have some Bermuda grass contamination in several greens that concerns me. We have treated the greens three times to kill any remaining Bermuda Grass with some good success, and on August 23rd we made a more potent applica- tion for final clean-up before we seed. The greens on the Original 18 are holding up very well through this very, very hot stretch of heat. They are still extremely young and in fact, greens take about five years to reach maturity and become ROCK SOLID. They are a little damp and prone to leaving a deep ball mark right now, as we are expe- riencing a significant increase of golf rounds played. PLEASE MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT TO REPAIR YOUR BALL MARKS !! As in the Spring, when the temperature finally drops out of the 100-degree range we will resume our program of verti-cutting and sand topdressing the greens on a regular basis. This practice is extremely important to help greens get firmer, smoother, faster, dryer and heal from ball marks much quicker. If we were to continue this type of maintenance during periods of 100-degree heat, your greens would die rapidly.
