PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
PRESIDENT GaryW. Ferguson
VICE PRESIDENT Melissa Riegel
At the September Board meeting, we heard very encouraging reports from all the committee chairs.Your Club is slightly ahead of budget for the year and the outlook for the remainder of the year is favorable. Hard to believe but the Finance Committee is working on next year’s budget. The House Committee has offered a very successful series of events and the fall calendar looks terrific, including the first ever Tri-Club Adult Dance on November 2nd. As many of you have pointed out, our golf courses and grounds have never looked better and the Grounds Department will be working this fall and winter to set the stage for an even better season next year. Rounds of golf this year are up dramatically over last year and our 5 year average. There are still a couple of golf events remaining of the calendar, including the popular Turkey Shoot! The Tennis Committee is excited to follow the construction of the new courts and will be managing the high demand for court time with the restrictions of the construction schedule. The paddle season is underway, and the restructured Squash Committee is active and working to bring some new ideas to the squash program. The Fitness Committee has been working with staff to improve communication and add to the program offerings. August saw a record number of fitness training sessions! The Membership Committee is always working to assist our members in the recruitment of new members to our Club. Over 70% of our new members come from introduction from existing members. The current count of Senior members stands at 765 and membership has been relatively stable of the past few years. All of this activity is made possible because we have an excellent staff with a leadership team dedicated to makingWilmington Country Club one of the finest Clubs in the nation. It is also made possible because so many of our members take the time to serve on committees. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who serve on committees. If you are interested in joining a committee, please let me know or contact the committee chair. New committees are put together every year after the Annual Meeting in November.

A NOTE FROM PHIL
Autumnal Greetings! Turning the calendar to November, there is a definite change from outdoor activity to those of a more indoor nature. Accordingly, we modify our services to keep pace. The golf course food stands and outdoor dining patios are now closed for the season. November also marks the time when Monday golf services are curtailed. The Bag Room and golf carts are staffed Tuesday through Sunday. Mid-month, the golf course opening time also backs up a bit. Although a golf course will remain open for foot traffic on Mondays, there will be no access to your equipment. If you are planning to play at home or away on a Monday, please arrange to get your bag over the weekend. Also, please note that the change in our aerification philosophy now means that the South will undergo its punching and coring starting Monday, November 11th. There is one final event - the second annual “Turkey Shoot” scheduled for Saturday the 23rd. Then, the South Course will
officially close for the season the Monday after Thanksgiving, (December 2nd).
Speaking of Thanksgiving, each year, more and more of you celebrate yours with us. Perhaps it is due to the following reasons: We do all the shopping, cooking and cleaning. We have a wonderfully stocked bar and an outstanding wine list. We never run out of silverware and always have enough chairs. Our hours of service allow for you to come at a time most convenient for your family. Our traditional, yet exquisite menu, served buffet style, offers excellent variety. Those reasons alone make it hard to justify going to all the effort yourself. When coupled with the fact that we also pack up extra portions of turkey and traditional trimmings for you to enjoy at home during half time of the “late game”, it is easy to understand why attendance grows each year. Make your reservation today. It is always a pleasure to announce new and expanded offerings. Early in the month (date still TBD) we will be bringing the new golf simulator online and making it available for members to enjoy. The simulator will be located in the Squash Building where the original Group Exercise programming was held. Details about how to gain access and use the venue will be communicated in a separate email, so watch for more information. By now you should have received the link to access the complete 2019 Holiday Schedule. Please review it carefully and make your plans to attend. Please pay special attention to the Candlelight Dinner reservation protocol. At 9:00 am on Tuesday, November 5th, we begin taking reservations for the three nights of our Christmas Candlelight Dinners. Seating is limited on each evening and each is always filled with a waiting list. All our holiday events are awesome, but this is the one that requires some pre-planning to participate. It seems hard to believe, but a new decade is approaching very quickly. If your plans for 2020 include hosting a private party or special event, we hope that you’ll consider having it at your Club. This type of activity plays an important part in the accomplishment of our financial goals. We are proud of our outstanding reputation for organizing and conducting events that consistently exceed the expectations of the host and their guests. Being able to entertain at your Club in this manner is truly one of the privileges of membership. You’ll never get the commitment and personal attention that we provide anywhere else. Please note that the Annual Election of the Stockholders will be heldThursday, November 21st at 5:30 p.m. in the Ballroom. If you haven’t already done so, please complete and return your proxy card (either electronically or paper) prior to that date. As always, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served following the meeting.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and if you’re traveling - stay safe. I’ll see you at the Club!

BOOK CLUB This month, our meeting is dedicated to Katherine Hoopes, a much loved member of our Book Club, who chose this book as our November selection. For our Tuesday, November 5th selection, we have chosen celebrated nature writer, Delia Owen’s lyrical novel, Where the Crawdads Sing , which takes us to the wild, desolate marshland off the North Carolina coast to meet Kya, an unforgettable child who grows up in a shack in the marsh near Barkley Cove, a small town on the Carolina coast. When Kya is abandoned at nine years old, she is illiterate and barely able to cook grits, yet she must fend for herself. Life is lonely for Kya.The marsh becomes her home and the raucous cawing of the crows, the screaming of the gulls, the croaking of the tree frogs, and even the shrill sound the male katydids make when they rub their wings together - these are the sounds that shatter the silence and lessen the loneliness for her. These are the sounds of friends. This is Kya’s heartbreaking coming-of-age story with a surprising unexpected twist. This is a book about resiliency and survival. Join us at 4:00 pm on November 5th in the Ladies’ Lounge as Frances Pyle leads the discussion of this beautiful, unforgettable novel. For December, we have chosen Kate Quinn’s thrilling historical novel The Alice Network which features two women: one a female spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in France during WorldWar I and the other a well-to-do American college student who is searching for her cousin. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
On the cover of WCC member John Riley’s new book, Delaware Eyewitness: Behind the Scenes in the First State , Wilmington mayor Mike Purzycki states, “anyone who fashions themselves a Delawarean will love this book.”In the book Riley shares his unique experience in Delaware politics, sports and corporate life, including inside stories involving governors, athletes, coaches, and leaders of some of Delaware's most prominent companies. Notably, Riley provides a detailed eyewitness account of the unraveling of Hercules, ravaged by bad
business decisions and under assault by an infamous corporate raider.
A regular contributor to the local publication, Town Square Delaware, John recently teamed up with former Philadelphia Eagle Kevin Reilly on his popular autobiography, Tackling Life. Tom Ciconte, who shows up in Delaware Eyewitness multiple times called it a “fabulous read,” and Jane Castle said her husband and former governor, Mike Castle,“devoured the book and enjoyed every page.” While the primary focus of the book is the political and corporate world, it also includes several golf stories. A caddy at the club in the early 60’s, John played on a high school championship team that included fellow members Tom Ciconte and Bob Murphy and was coached by Bill Campbell. Ironically, John won his last high school match against WCC golf star Jim Monkman but lost his last college match to WCC champion Bob Murphy. Another interesting story is how John met national champion and future member Charlie McDowell when he caddied for him during a visit toWilmington with his prep school roommate and club junior champion, Chris Coulson.
For the next several weeks you can pick up a copy of the book in the golf pro shop. The cost is $25 with $10 from each book donated to the club’s scholarship fund.
