WRITING ON THE WALL
A Lesson in Fear and Faith
maintain the bonds from our old church, while building new ones in the new congregation. Looking back on the experience, we really should have done it sooner. And when the leadership came together to help with my father’s funeral last January, I knew St. John’s in Vernon was truly our home. I was humbled to have been able to help my parish through that trying time. I’ve always been an avid churchgoer and in an alternate reality, I believe I would have become a priest instead of a chef. There’s still a chance I may enter the priesthood in retirement. Personally, I feel that the church could do a lot more in regard to understanding the natural world, using breakthroughs in quantum physics. The way I see it, there’s no divide between the scientific method and spiritual practices that go back throughout human history. The idea that there has to be this discord between church and science is all wrong. One of my passions involves reading on the divine as well as reading about discoveries in quantum physics. I firmly believe that, in our lifetime, we will come to prove God does exist — that He is here and now and everywhere — using scientific breakthroughs. It is possible, if we approach religion with a new, fresh set of eyes, that we can bring the kind of deeper understanding that we desperately need to our modern world. Only God knows what the future will bring, but when we trust in His plan and allow ourselves to look at things with an open mind, the unknown doesn’t seem so scary after all.
It is scary not knowing what the future will bring. This is something I was reminded of two years ago when we had to leave our church in East Hartford. I was baptized at St. John’s Episcopal Church in East Hartford in 1970, confirmed there in 1984 and married there in 1999. That church had been with me my whole life, but our congregation had gotten old and our numbers dwindled. This is something many churches experience and it is a heavy burden on a church. The only option was to close our doors, merge with another parish and sell our building.
I was the senior warden who spearheaded this process. It wasn’t easy to make people see we had to let go. Like myself, many members of the congregation had been going to this church their entire lives. But the reality was that we weren’t growing and if you’re not growing you’re dying. The writing was on the wall. We didn’t know what we were going to look like on the other side. What would happen to our stuff? Our liturgy?
Our events? Would we have to give up all our traditions? Through that process, we learned a lot about having faith and trusting in God’s plan for us. It was a struggle, but when we reached that other side, the outcome, God’s plan for us, was much better than anything we could have planned for ourselves. Our last service at the church in East Hartford was Christmas of 2016. We moved in with St. John’s Episcopal Church in Vernon the next week. Right from the start, their parish was warm and welcoming. They worked hard to help everyone

The Classic Cookie Gets a New Look IT’S A NEW ERA FOR ANIMAL CRACKERS
For many of us, Barnum’s Animals Crackers were a childhood staple. The animal-shaped crackers have been around since the late 1800s and can still be found today on store shelves and in home pantries.
Since those early days, the crackers’ packaging has maintained its iconic circus-wagon look, featuring a series of animals waiting in cages for their turn for a big-top performance.
Last year, the Barnum & Bailey Circus, the namesake of the crackers, said their 146-year-old circus was coming to an end. Circuses aren’t as popular as they once were and more people have spoken out on animal rights. For the company, it only made sense to update the look of the box and bring further attention to animal rights. In the past, Barnum’s Animals Crackers have been used to bring awareness to animal and environmental issues. As the Associated Press notes, “In 1995, [the company] offered an endangered species collection that raised money for the World Wildlife Fund. In 1997, it offered a zoo collection that raised money for the American Zoo and Aquarium Association. And in 2010, it worked with designer Lilly Pulitzer on a pastel-colored box that raised money for tiger conservation.” This is a big step forward for the endearing animal cracker, which, with updated sensibilities, will likely remain a childhood staple for many more years to come.
However, with real-life circuses relying less and less on animal performances in the face of backlash against the treatment of performing animals, Nabisco, the maker of Barnum’s Animals Crackers, decided it was time for a change. Gone are the bars and gone is the circus theme. Instead, the new Barnum’s Animals Crackers box will feature the animals — a zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe and gorilla — in an open grassland setting. A spokesperson with Mondelez International, Nabisco’s parent company, said, “We felt this was the right time for the next evolution in our design, now showing the animals in a natural habitat.”
THE MYSTERY OF THE MISSING TEETH CAT GOT YOUR TONGUE?
The following week, Phil finally found his dentures. His son was settling in on the couch to watch TV and as he went to wrap himself in an afghan, he felt something hard hit his hand. Lo and behold, Herbert Spencer had buried the teeth in the blanket. In the years after the dentures incident, the rogue cat stole many other small but important household items from Phil. In fact, the villainy occurred so often that Phil threw out the afghan to rob the cat of his favorite hiding spot. Now Phil holds on tightly to his teeth, just waiting to see what Herbert Spencer decides to purloin next.
As Canadian resident Phil Bailey was preparing to take a shower one morning, he took out his dentures and set them near the bathroom sink. But when he got out of the shower, the dentures were nowhere to be found! He and his wife searched for hours, but as the time for work grew nearer, Phil was forced to leave the house toothless. He spent the rest of the week that way. During one of his frustrated commutes to work, he started to suspect that either his son was pulling a prank on him or that his cat, named Herbert Spencer, had sneaked into the bathroom, stolen his dentures and hidden them somewhere in the house. Later that weekend, Phil (still toothless) traveled to the Tournament of the Bands to watch his son’s high school marching band compete. Unable to hide from friends and family his embarrassment at having lost his dentures, he explained his suspicion about Herbert Spencer’s possible mischief. One of his son’s classmates retorted, “What’s the matter, Mr. Phil? The cat got your teeth?”

A PLENTIFUL HARVEST The Healthiest Fall Foods
We’re well into the fall harvest and that means there is plenty of amazing produce fresh for the picking. Here are a few of the healthiest harvest options to put on your table this year. Pumpkin Is there anything more “fall” than pumpkins? Their rich orange is the color of the season, they make the best jack-o’-lanterns and pretty soon there will be pumpkin spice in everything! Plus, the nutritional value of this beautiful squash is nothing to scoff at. • Excellent source of vitamin A, which can help improve your vision • Rich in potassium, an electrolyte important to maintaining heart health • 20 percent of your daily recommended intake of fiber Pears Struggling with your sweet tooth this fall? Grab a pear! In addition to being a sweet alternative to artificially flavored candy, pears also have plenty of healthy vitamins and nutrients. • Full of vitamin C, which is great for repairing body tissues • Plenty of copper, which works with iron to form red blood cells • Good source of boron, a nutrient that can help your body retain calcium Cauliflower This overlooked food is full of amazing health benefits. You can use riced cauliflower as a flour alternative to
cut carbs and add nutrients to other recipes. Healthy pizza dough, anyone? • Great source of antioxidants, which can reduce inflammation, boost immune health, and even protect against disease • Packed with nutrients, including fiber, potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6 • Only 25 calories per cup Pomegranates Not just for Greek goddesses trapped in the underworld anymore, pomegranates are often passed by because they can be a pain to prepare. But cutting through the thick rind and getting to the juicy seeds inside is well worth the effort when you consider the health benefits. • Rich in antioxidants (three times the amount found in green tea!), which may help improve memory and stall Alzheimer’s disease • High in vitamin C and vitamin E, immune-boosting nutrients that help prevent illness and fight infection • Good source of folate, an acid that helps cells divide properly These are just a few harvest favorites, but there’s almost no end to the delicious, healthy foods available in the fall. Even if you don’t live on a farm, your local grocery store will be overflowing with a bountiful harvest ready to be turned into your next meal. Enjoy! TESTIMONIALS “October Kitchen is truly a wonderful place and their staff — especially Stephanie — represents them well. I needed a food care package delivered to someone who just had a death in their family and the women I talked to at the restaurant couldn’t have been nicer. They went out of their way to include a note card and ice blanket just in case the recipient wasn’t home. And the food sounds delicious! They even had breakfast muffins and cookies besides cake and pie. I couldn’t be more impressed, as they called me when the food was picked up and I already have an email copy of my receipt. What a refreshing experience — they have my highest regard.” –Sue S. “I am so thankful for October Kitchen making my busy life easier when it comes to cooking. I have been a returning customer for five years. The food is delicious and my mind is at ease knowing I am eating healthy, nutritious meals. I am lucky not to have food allergies, but the chef caters to your every need; all you need to do is ask. Will return soon.” –Carole L.

Turn Back Time With Social Media
One of the hardest challenges of aging isn’t coping with the physical changes or new limitations associated with getting older; it’s finding new groups of people with similar interests, especially for empty nesters. Many adults build their peer networks around their children, making them the focal point of conversations with other parents in similar situations.
