PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT APRIL 2022 Dr. Samantha Vidrine OB/GYN
Where are you originally from? I was born and raised in Opelousas. In fact, I was born at Opelousas General. I went to school just across the street at Opelousas Catholic from PreK to 12th grade. I have always called Opelousas home. Why did you choose OGHS? I moved away for undergraduate, medical school, and residency. Even though I lived away for 13 years, I knew that I always wanted to come back home after training. I participated in the summer student program at OGHS for two years when I was in high school. It is such a blessing and an honor to be able to serve the community where I was raised. What is your favorite thing about working at OGHS? I love the sense of family here. I have some sort of non-work connection with so many employees and patients here. It was an adjustment going from training out of state where I did not know anyone outside of work to moving back home to a small-town community, but it didn’t take long to realize how enjoyable it is to work in a place where you really feel connected. What do you enjoy most about being a physician? As an OBGYN, I help women through so many different phases of their lives. Some of those phases are scary, some of them are sad, and some of them are joyous. OBGYN is one specialty where you get the best of both worlds of medicine: you get the clinical side where you see patients for many years and develop relationships plus you get the surgical side. I also get to be a part of childbirth, which is one of the best parts of my job. What would you like everyone to know about you? My family is my world. I have been married to my best friend Trey for 8 years now. We have three children, a boy, and two girls. Grayson is 6 years old, Landry is 4 years old, and Harper will be 2 years old soon. What do you like to do in your free time? Being a full-time physician and having 3 children ages 6 years and under doesn’t leave a lot of free time, but when I have free time, I enjoy camping, reading, sewing, shopping, LSU football, and spending downtime at home with my family.

Winter Williams is being ACKNOWLEDGED as the Spotlight Employee for April 2022. We would like to INTRODUCE Winter, who has been a member of our OGHS family for the DURATION of 1 year. This Month We Wear Blue April is National AutismAwareness Month. While we don’t just celebrate autism, we also want to bring your attention to many of the diagnoses that fit within that umbrella. A diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) now includes several conditions that used to be diagnosed separately: autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), andAsperger syndrome. It’s probably not too difficult to think of one person that has been diagnosed within the ASD. Whether within your family, your friend circle, your neighborhood or church setting, there is probably someone that you can identify that has been diagnosed along the spectrum of this common neurodevelopmental disorder. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that approximately 1 of 44 people are autistic. It’s not as easy to recognize autism as the signs and symptoms vary widely from person to person and they can start as early as 2 years old. Diagnosing someone withASD can be difficult as oftentimes, individuals withASD have challenges with social, emotional, and communication skills. Many people withASD also have different ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to things. Since there are no medical tests or labs that show a diagnosis, it is important to look for signs early and report those to your primary care physician. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical to finding the appropriate clinical and community resources to help support the patient and his/her family. A loving, supportive, and accepting parent makes all the difference to a child who has ASD. Within the healthcare system, there should be a multidisciplinary approach to supporting those with ASD. It is important to seek out healthcare providers, therapists, counselors, and such that are trained/skilled withASD so that they can help answer questions and aid the patient and family. Within the Acadiana area, please visit the Autism Society of Acadiana at https://acadianaautism.com/ . On this website, there are dozens of local resources that can help provide you with information if you or a loved one is experiencing challenges in the social, emotional and communication areas. While not all deficits within these areas lend itself toward anASD diagnosis, it is extremely helpful to reach out to individuals that are consideredASD advocates or resource savvy within the community. Blue is for autism. We wear it to show our support for awareness, advocacy, and acceptance for ASD. We also wear it to bring attention and intention in hopes that we take it a step further by donating to a local autism organization or helping a family that has anASD child. Together, we can make a difference.

Take the Pressure off your Kidneys and Health!
Prevention:
Build a healthy meal plan
Pick physical activities you can stick to
Maintain a healthy weight
Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night
Take steps to quit smoking and limit alcohol
Three ways you can build your personalized path to better kidney care:
Be an active participant in your care. Work with your health care team to create a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle, mobility, health status, and dietary needs. Follow your care plan. Take medicine as prescribed and stay up to date on vaccines. The COVID-19 and flu vaccines are especially important for people with kidney disease, who may be more likely to get very sick from COVID-19 or the flu. Build a kidney healthy lifestyle. Try to incorporate healthy habits into your daily schedule. This can include healthy foods and beverages you enjoy, physical activity like walking or taking the stairs to help you stay active and manage your weight, or a sleep routine that helps you get enough rest.
