MOTION Monthly ESTABLISHING A WORK ETHIC DURING MY VERY FIRST JOB It’s summer, so many high school students and recent graduates will be applying for jobs and entering the workforce for the very first time. This is often an exciting time in a young person’s life as they are taking their first big steps into adulthood. I can still vividly remember working shifts at my first job. Throughout my experience, I learned many lessons that led me to where I am today. When I was growing up, my sister and I would earn our allowances by doing chores around the house. It wasn’t anything extreme, but it helped instill a strong work ethic from an early age. When I was 15 years old, I decided I wanted to get a real job to earn some extra cash. I had friends who worked at the mall who could have helped me get a job working alongside them, but I wanted to do something I would actually enjoy.

Make Your Move to Better

strategies to get everyone involved. It helped me learn to develop my leadership skills, as there is nothing more challenging than negotiating with a 4-year-old. That experience led me down a path where I wanted to take on more challenges and help others achieve their potential. I continued to work at the baseball camp for three more summers. I even came back and helped out after my first year of college. After the first year, I became a director and earned a little more responsibility. I was assigned camps and coaches while working with management to report numbers and

I learned about an opportunity to coach a baseball camp for kids aged 4–12 and made my way to the Embassy Suites where they were hosting interviews. I was essentially asked if I liked money and if I liked baseball. After correctly answering “yes” to both of those questions, I was offered the job and put through training. The training only lasted for two days, and then I was put in charge of 40 kids at once.

handle the other aspects of the business. It gave me insight into what a job would look like in the future. The experience also taught me that I wanted to provide direct service in my actual career, which led me to the physical therapy field.

“IT HELPED ME LEARN TO DEVELOP

MY LEADERSHIP SKILLS, AS THERE IS NOTHING MORE CHALLENGING THAN NEGOTIATING WITH A 4-YEAR-OLD.”

Possibly the most valuable thing I learned while working at the camp was that I enjoyed it, and going forward, I needed to choose a career path

We would work with the kids from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. When I arrived at the camp in the morning, I met with the director who assigned us a certain group of kids. Of course, they assigned me the youngest group during my first summer working at the camp. The kids I was in charge of were between 4–6 years old. With that age group, I couldn’t run drills or teach them the finer aspects of the sport, so we spent more time teaching them how to have fun with baseball while creating new games for them to play. At times, it was like herding cats! We did have some kids who were serious about the sport and wanted to learn everything they could, while others wanted to spend their time picking daisies. It was a lot of fun trying to come up with

I would genuinely like for the rest of my life.

If your kids are heading into the workforce for the very first time, or if you’re preparing to start a new job, I wish you the best of luck. It can be an exciting experience for everyone involved!

Why People Choose Physical Therapy

They Know What They’re Doing!

The physical therapy industry has grown steadily over the past 20 years and doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. According to the Bureau

SUCCESS STORIES

“I really appreciate how helpful OPTM Saratoga has been for me. I came here about 3 months ago with tailbone pain. My PT Emily explained the exercises that I needed to do and demonstrated them. Emily has a charming personality which made it easy and fun to work with her. I really commend Nathan, who helped with my exercises in the OPTM gym. I was able to reduce my tailbone pain from an 8/10 to a 2/10, which has been a life-changer for me. Thank you OPTM Saratoga!” – B.S. “When I first experienced the pain in my left shoulder, I thought who could help? I live close by and thought of your clinic. I came and worked with Natalie for 4 weeks. Natalie helped me understand and perform exercises. It was a gradual but very rewarding experience. Slowly but surely the pain in my left shoulder subsided. It was a tremendous relief. Before, I could hardly sit and read, which I love to do. Now I am 100% recovered. Thank you very much, Natalie!” – J.B. “Before working with Phil, I couldn’t open a jar, lift anything, or chop vegetables with my right wrist and thumb. My hand ached constantly in spite of Advil. Phil immediately showed me stretches to relieve the pain and he worked with me patiently for several months. He did not let me get discouraged at the pace of improvement. Now I can resume all my normal activities, plus play my much- loved golf. Thank you to Phil and his team!” – B.M.

of Labor Statistics, the industry is projected to grow 21% between 2020 and 2030, which is much faster than the average for all other occupations. You may be wondering why our industry is seeing so much growth right now, and the answer is that many people now choose physical therapy as their first option when seeking pain relief. People want a safe and trustworthy option when attempting to relieve their pain, and there’s no better choice than seeing a physical therapist. Below, you’ll find the three main reasons people choose physical therapy before other alternatives when they’re in pain. WE’LL FIND THE CAUSE OF THE PAIN. If you turn to pain pills or medicine every time you’re in pain, are you really going to solve the issue? Most of the time, pills are simply going to distract you from the pain rather than work to fix it. When you see a physical therapist, we work to find the root of the problem and explain how it is affecting you. Through physical therapy, we can find the cause and implement techniques and exercises to remedy it. YOU’LL HAVE NO SIDE EFFECTS. When you first take pills or medicine to help relieve pain, you never truly know how your body will react to it. It could make you drowsy or nauseous. Some pain pills are extremely addictive and can leave you in worse shape, financially and physically, than you were in before taking them. Physical therapy offers a safe alternative that actually fixes your problems and leaves you no worse for wear. YOU’LL GROW STRONGER. Physical therapy is not necessarily about the immediate results. Throughout your treatment, your body will continue to grow stronger, which will prevent the pain from returning at a future date. We’ll also teach you stretches and exercises you can do at home to help strengthen your body even more.

If you’re in pain and unsure where to turn, give us a call. We have the tools and experience to help you live a pain-free life.

Our Assistant Clinical Director, Phil Edwards STEPPING INTO A NEW ROLE

For over 20 years, we at OPTM Physical Therapy of Saratoga have served our community to the best of our abilities. Through hard work and dedication, our experienced team has made a difference in countless lives. Our physical therapist, Phil Edwards, has been assisting patients and other team members at our clinic for 17 years now, and we’re beyond excited to announce that Phil has accepted an offer to become our new assistant clinical director here at OPTM of Saratoga. Phil has been in the physical therapy industry for nearly 23 years. He originally got into the field because he wanted to do something sports medicine-related, but once he got into physical therapy, he realized he also wanted to help treat the everyday person, not just athletes. He feels that physical therapy gives him the best of both worlds. He still gets to help the athletic population but can also focus on helping everyone else get back to their daily activities. When the assistant clinical director position became available, Phil felt as if he had reached a point in his career where he could take on more responsibility to help the business continue to grow. Over the past few years, Phil has built some fantastic relationships with physicians in the area, and he will continue to build these in his new role. He will also be taking on some new duties to help assist the clinical director. Phil will still continue to work with new and returning patients in this role. He prides himself on getting to know his patients on a personal level. He always makes an effort to explain that he’s there to help them

get where they need to be. Phil has an extensive background in manual therapy and uses certain techniques that are extremely beneficial to his patients. We’re thrilled to see how Phil grows in his new role. He’s proven himself to be a knowledgeable and talented physical therapist, and we know he will continue to prove himself as our new assistant clinical director.

trails, this one is relatively quiet with its narrow

Want to feel like you’ve stepped into a lush dream? You don’t need to travel too far to experience truly stunning outdoor adventures. The U.S. has plenty within our borders! Here are just a few, located in our Northeastern states. NO. 1: WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST, NEW HAMPSHIRE If you want to visit an enchanted forest, look no further than White Mountain National Forest! Whether you want to hike its various mountain ranges to spy some gorgeous views, wind through an endless sea of trees, or spot a plethora of unique local fauna and flora, this beautiful national forest has a trail for everyone. You can even hike the Appalachian Trail to walk a mile in our American ancestors’ shoes. NO. 2: STEPSTONE FALLS (BEN UTTER TRAIL), RHODE ISLAND If you’re in Rhode Island, especially in spring, you won’t want to miss this perfect trail. Follow this walk along a picturesque river and you’ll see fabulous slabs, cascades, woods, and much more. Unlike the popular — and often busy — White Mountain

foot path. It’s also a gentle walk, being mostly flat with some alternating, gentle ups and downs. It’s a great walk for all ages.

NO. 3: CAMEL’S HUMP TRAIL, VERMONT As the third highest peak in the state, Camel’s Hump Trail offers unbeatable views in nearly every direction. It’s easy to reach the trailhead, as it’s just off Camel’s Hump Road with a small parking area for visitors. It’s very convenient, but make sure to arrive early in warmer months and on weekends — the road is not an option for parking. The trail offers stunning views of Vermont because of the high elevation, but it may be challenging if you’re afraid of heights. The last part of the trail is quite steep, but once you reach the peak, you’ll see an incredible 360-degree view of the surrounding area. On a clear day, you can even see Canada!

If you want to live out your outdoor dreams, these are excellent places to start! Give them a try!
