MOTION Monthly REFLECTING ON 2 YEARS OF PARENTHOOD HOW MY FAMILY HAS GROWN IN THIS TIME I became a dad two years ago, and it was the single most terrifying and exciting moment of my life. My wife, Stacie, had labored for days up to that point. Right as our son Zach was born, they pulled me to the side of the room to watch and help as they took his measurements. In hindsight, they were distracting me. I can remember hearing wild beeping noises and all sorts of machines going in the background, as there were some lingering complications after Stacie had given birth. All I could think about was her safety, my baby, and my own capability. Could I raise a baby?! Thankfully, everyone was healthy, and Stacie and I shared in our gratitude for a son we had waited for and wanted for so long. But it was exhausting! I think we only slept 20 minutes that first night. We didn’t know much about babies at that time, but we were so excited and full of love for Zach. Today looks very different. This month, Zach will turn 2 years old, and as we prepare to welcome another son this May, we’re trying to prepare Zach for the new addition. Up until this point, he’s had all the attention in the world! It will be interesting to see his reaction to that change. He understands we will have a baby, and that the baby is in his mom’s “belly.” But he also thinks the baby is in everyone’s belly! He pulls up shirts, points at other people’s stomachs, and says, “Baby!” Zach never fails to amaze me in countless other ways, too. Now that he’s a toddler, we will go in the yard and hit a few golf balls around together. He loves golf! I was actually able to find a left-handed club, cut it down, and re-grip it for him so he can swing like a real pro. I’ve learned he’s capable of so much more than I realized a 2-year-old could do. Zach is deliberate with his swings, and if we let him, he would be outside hitting golf balls all day. Unfortunately, when it’s time to go inside, that’s when Zach’s toddler side starts to show! Then he falls into a complete tantrum, begging to stay outside longer.

Make Your Move to Better

Another hobby I get to share with Zach is baseball. He loves hitting balls off the tee, and he often swings balls toward the dog, thinking the dog will catch it. It rarely works out that way! We also like to watch old baseball home runs together, and every time the batter smacks the ball, Zach yells out, “HIIIIT!” He celebrates as if it were a real game! I love it. I didn’t force baseball or golf on him, but I’m happy to share these hobbies with him as he gets older and can do more on his own. I can’t wait for Zach to become a big brother and experience the way he and his little brother will grow and become who they are going to be, too. Looking back on the scared first-time dad I was two years ago, I’m proud. Stacie and I have learned a lot in our two years of parenthood, and while there are many more lessons to come, we feel pretty lucky every day we create memories with our children.

Happy birthday, Zach!

3 BOOKS TO HELP YOU HEAL Change Your Mindset to Change Your Mind

They Know What They’re Doing!

SUCCESS STORIES

Physical therapy is a powerful treatment option designed to use your body’s natural ability to move, strengthen, and repair itself, but another part of your body is integral to healing: your brain. Your thoughts can provide you with support or hold you back.

“OPTM is one of the best PT clinics I have seen. I went in with hip discomfort and sciatica pain & numbness. The front desk staff were always very attentive to my request, and my therapist, Natalie, was very capable and patient with me, and it’s a joy working with her on my issues. After about three months of treatment, my sciatica pain was completely cured, and I still do some of the exercises I learned from her to keep me in shape. BTW, their location is very convenient to me too, located in a quiet office mall of Saratoga, with plenty of parking.”

If you’re struggling mentally or emotionally as you recover from

an injury, we encourage you to flex your mind. Check out these three books to create a stronger brain that’s focused on healing.

‘The Bright Hour: A Memoir of Living and Dying’ by Nina Riggs

The great-great-great-granddaughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson takes a cue from her family’s legacy to pen this compelling, powerful memoir. Nina Riggs was diagnosed with cancer at 37 years old, and that diagnosis quickly turned terminal. Nina wrote “The Bright Hour” to share the meaning in life and what that looks like when you’re a mother of two and a wife who is set to die before she hits 40 years old. Readers will follow Nina as she learned to embrace both the good and bad days, pulling inspiration from her ancestry and other authors. ‘Declutter Your Mind: How to Stop Worrying, Relieve Anxiety, and Eliminate Negative Thinking’ by S.J. Scott and Barrie Davenport Sometimes, we just need a refresh, and that’s exactly what you get from authors S.J. Scott and Barrie Davenport. Readers will learn about strategies to clear your mind of negative thinking and constant worrying — and why this happens — and how to take control of your mind once again. In doing so, you can become more accepting, open, and aware of what drives you each day. Best of all, the authors’ approach is science-backed and focuses on making real, lasting change.

“I just completed eight weeks of post total knee replacement physical therapy at OPTM in Saratoga. Since I have had PT on this same knee several times, I was concerned that I wouldn’t receive the intensity that I wanted for the best results. I was assigned Tyler Vinson as my physical therapist. Tyler was perfect because he provided the intensity and hard work that I desired but tempered my treatment to prevent injury while gaining strength and range of motion. While I wanted to be pushed hard, Tyler clearly explained the value of going slow to get the best results. OPTM is a beautiful facility and the staff, from the front desk to the physical therapists, are professional and thorough. I highly recommend this location for optimal physical therapy results.”

– T.F.

“I would highly recommend OPTM. From the front desk, assistants and therapists, everyone, was so accommodating, helpful, professional and friendly. Phil was my therapist and was very patient & understanding and helped me through some difficult months and challenges. Phil was very knowledgeable, took the time & listened. He gave me great advice and treatment. I’ve been to many physical therapists over the years and have always dreaded going. Not the case here, I never thought I’d say this, but I looked forward to going. Overall, a great team, comfortable environment and everyone was attentive, engaged & super friendly while being professional.”

‘Edge: Turning Adversity Into Advantage’ by Laura Huang

You may see your injury as a failure, but what if it was actually the tool you needed to grow and change? What if it could give you an “edge?” In “Edge,” author Laura Huang encourages readers to passionately advocate for their strengths but to also find value in their weaknesses. Focused on the entrepreneurial spirit and her studies, Huang delves into the ways some of the greatest success stories once began with faults.

CELEBRATING WOMEN WITH TARGETED CARE

Why Women Should Consider Pelvic Floor PT

Each March, we celebrate the accomplishments of women during Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8. In celebrating them, we can empower young girls and women to continue strengthening their communities. At OPTM of Saratoga, we’re proud to provide specialized care for women and the unique needs they may have as a result of their anatomy. While good pelvic floor health is necessary for every person, the trauma and positioning women experience through birth and as they age can make this kind of physical therapy invaluable to their health. Pelvic floor physical therapists are trained professionals dedicated to strengthening the muscles and joints surrounding the pelvis. This can aid in preventing and treating incontinence and pain during regular activities.

other activities. In these scenarios, women should seek guidance from a trained pelvic floor expert.

When should I see a PT for this treatment?

Does OPTM of Saratoga offer this support?

Because of the physical trauma that can come from pregnancy, it’s beneficial for women to attend regular physical therapy while they are pregnant and after giving birth. A therapist can help a woman strengthen the muscles used in labor to protect against long-term damage. This can also keep a woman active during pregnancy. After labor, pelvic floor physical therapy can provide treatment and healing. However, pregnancy isn’t the only stipulation of pelvic floor health for women. As a woman ages, the pelvic floor’s strength can deteriorate. This can cause embarrassing moments — like urine leakage after a sneeze — constipation, numbness, and general pain during sitting or

She hopes to someday teach other physical therapists, and she is one of our best instructors for our patients! ING UP 4 Health Benefits of Sprin

g-Cleaning

IT’S MORE THAN JUST TIDY

Sunday, March 20, is the first day of spring — which means it’s time for some spring-cleaning. Did you know that cleaning is not just about tidying up a physical space? It’s also about improving overall well-being. Here’s how organization and cleanliness can help you in more ways than you might expect.

spread of germs. By keeping household surfaces clean, we help thwart the spread of viruses and illnesses.

Spring-cleaning helps you breathe better.

Spring often brings pollen that triggers allergies for many. But pollen isn’t the only thing to blame when people have difficulty breathing. When dust and pet dander build up in your home, your respiratory system is greatly affected too. Deep-cleaning your air filters and vents can make breathing effortless — and it’s truly amazing how this can improve your well-being.

Spring-cleaning reduces stress and depression.

Tidiness and mental health are actually connected. Studies have found that having a clean home is directly correlated to happiness and your ability to focus. Anxiety can spike when laundry is piling up, items are strewn everywhere, and papers get scattered on various surfaces within the home. Clearing the clutter is a great way to boost your mood and increase those feel-good hormones.

It keeps you more active.

Off the couch and on your feet! Even just running the vacuum and clearing the clutter from the dining room table will get you up and moving, which is healthy for your heart and body. This spring season, putting some elbow grease into your cleaning will benefit you in more ways than one. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!

It prevents illnesses.

Doorknobs, refrigerator handles, light switches, countertops, and remote controls are all things we touch many times a day. Cleaning anything that’s used often is one way to reduce the
