THE NATIONAL CANDLE ASSOCIATION ESTIMATES THAT CANDLES ARE USED IN 7 OUT OF 10 HOUSEHOLDS. In 2011 – 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 8,690 home structure fires started by candles, per year. These fires caused an annual average of 82 civilian fire deaths, 800 civilian fire injuries, and $295 million in direct property damage. Overall, candles caused 2% of reported home fires, 3% of the home fire deaths, 7% of the home fire injuries, and 4% of the direct property damage in reported home fires during this period. On average, 24 home candle fires were reported per day. Candle fires are more common around the winter holidays Candle fires peaked in December (11%), and January and November ranked second, each with 10% of home candle fires. The top three days for home candle fires were Christmas, New Year’s, and New Year’s Eve.

The new RZAD "Halo" programmable candle extinguisher is a device designed to automatically and safely extinguish candles even when they are unattended. The unit can be programmed to automatically extinguish candles for up to three hours. The "Halo" also includes Bluetooth connectivity so that you can wirelessly stream music directly from the unit, and ambiance lights that can be preset to either cycle through six different colors, or you can select one color. We are excited to share with you a new organization specifically targeted to Black Men, called Black Men Heal, Inc. We are currently offering 8 free sessions to local men of color by qualified therapists of color who volunteer to donate 8 hours over a duration of 2 months. In exchange, the men will have to commit to share/discuss their experience with 8 other black men that they identify. Our Mission To provide access to mental health treatment, psycho-education, and community resources to men of color.

This passion has led to becoming the founder of Black Men Heal, a mission dedicated to offering free therapy to black men and working to TASNIM SULAIMAN Founder of Black Men Heal Tasnim Sulaiman is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and a Marriage & Family Therapist specializing in sex therapy. Tasnim owns a private practice in the Philadelphia area; serves as a Sexuality Behavioral Consultant to Adults with intellectual disabilities; and is an adjunct professor of Human Sexuality. Tasnim also enjoys training other therapists and serving as an expert speaker/consultant for organizations, radio & television.

Research shows that men feel pressure to conform to traditional gender norms such a toughness, fearlessness, and invulnerability to pain. Unfortunately, many Black men often suffer in silence because of fears that being vulnerable goes against masculinity ideals. Each male selected for the free sessions is essentially encouraged to become a mental health change agent. By one male simply sharing/discussing his experience with other black men, he creates a safe space for another man to step into.

Reeds most recent venture include non- profit development with a specific focus on justice reform in regional jails and prisons as an extension of his participation in his church’s Prison Ministry. His respect for people, appreciation for law and order, and desire to extend service to his communities drives his passion to ensure that individuals within our criminal justice system receive fair and equitable treatment and experience opportunities that support their access and transition to society upon release. Douglas Reed’s positive and charismatic energy is a strong influential and motivational tool to those who engage with his intellect and his work.

Douglas McNeil Reed Douglas McNeil Reed, military veteran and dedicated social justice advocate, has a spansive career that includes experience in law enforcement, organizational management, and working toward achieving greater diversity and equity within our armed forces. Douglas has lectured in courses at Columbia University that address concerns regarding correctional systems and institutions. Reed has served as a mentor to fellow soldiers and sports coach to local young adults. He has proven to be an invaluable resource to his neighborhood, church, and professional settings. Douglas’ vision and commitment to enhancing our social world can be best described through the words of Douglas Adams when he says, “to give real service you must add something which cannot be

mental health resources while ensuring continuity of care. In 2014, the President of

Interface retired, and instead of closing its doors Zakia was offered the opportunity to take over the business. In 2015, Zakia Williams became the new President and CEO of Interface Psych Services. Zakia continues to be very passionate about mental health issues and therapy. Her mission is to educate and remove the stigma surrounding mental health in the Black community. She is on the executive board of the National Congress of Black Women (the Philadelphia Chapter) as the Recording Secretary. She is dedicated and works nonstop helping people finding their path to healing. She is now the Communications Relation Specialist for Black Men Heal.

Zakia Williams Zakia Williams began her career in the mental health field over 17 years ago after completing an undergraduate degree at Temple University. In 2001 she successfully earned a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Business. During that time she was employed by Resources for Human Development and also Philadelphia Corporation for Aging as a Social Worker/Case Manager. Both are Philadelphia based companies that provide services & resources in the community for children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. In 2008, she continued her studies, and earned an MBA. Eager to continue in her field she went to work for Interface Psych Services as the Director of Case Management where she was instrumental in providing clients with

motivation into Mental Health so that it can be the focal point of today’s conversation. Reggie’s story furthers his mission to not only impact his community but people everywhere. From police departments to middle schools, he’s just looking to serve and leave the world better than he found it.

Reginald A. Howard Reginald A. Howard is a Mental Health Advocate, Influencer and Idealist. He uses his life experiences to ignite, inspire and empower others to prioritize their mental health. He has been featured on Comcast, CNBC, The Philadelphia Tribune and in Voyage ATL magazine. On a typical day, Reggie’s contribution to change consist of being an active board member for Lindley Academy Charter School, presentations for the National Alliance on Mental Illness and serving as an Advocacy Outreach Specialist for Black Men Heal. He went through the first cohort of Black Men Heal and is a real-life example of a healed man healing other men. Rather it’s through his mentally healing podcast, his paradigm shifting book or his emotionally connecting speeches, Reg puts the

my relationship with God I would have thought I’d done something extremely wrong to have so many challenges thrown my way at once. Had I not had such defiant faith I would have caved in and quit. My heart is humbled and filled to overflow with thanksgiving. Trials and tribulations come when you make the decision to live out your purpose and destiny with great intent to change and impact the world you live in. I can recall watching the news when first learning that our nation was going on shutdown due to a global pandemic. My immediate thought as an African American was where were we going to get financial help, how were we going to make it through this pandemic. We were all instructed to stock up on food and shut our doors to not come out for three weeks, which ultimately turned in to months. I said to myself there are so many who don’t have money to stock for a week let alone three weeks. Some said three months. I knew this was a season in which you had better have faith and know who your provider truly is. I joined a prayer group and began praying with them everyday for a several weeks. At the time I was comfortably driving Uber and Lyft while taking classes to complete my Ph.D. I was making pretty good money. Driving was perfect for me because I needed to focus on school and it afforded flexibility. No pressure or high demands. I loved it. I was taking online classes online while building my business in the background. Driving also allow me to control

I have always had great faith, however for the last ten years I have been in a season of transition. Unknown territory requiring a new level of trusting and believing. I conversate with my Heavenly Father throughout the day. Not only do I speak with Him as if He were right there in the room with me, I have also learned to quiet my spirit to hear Him respond. Not always in an audible voice, sometimes He speaks to me through Holy Spirit where I just suddenly know His response in my spirit. There is such clarity in His response. It is filled with revelation instructions with understanding and purpose. It is an absolutely beautiful experience one that can never be explained to another in a way they would get it unless they have experienced for themselves. I can feel the love of God all around me, all the time. I am truly thankful for that because I have faced some very trying times in the recent years and if it were not for

my schedule when I worked and when I needed off. It was perfect. Until… God had another plan. The first few weeks of the pandemic I wasn’t making the money I had prior to because God was drying that season of my life up. I was preparing for the Annual Take Center Stage Conference and God spoke to me and encouraged me to m ake the “OWN It!” Magazine which was at that time dedicated to the conference and an annual issue. It was print only as well. I came across a company that provided digital services which made going monthly realistic. As a seasoned professional and grad student with over 30 years of diversified experience in corporate management, entrepreneurship, and academia I had more than enough content to fill the magazine on a monthly basis. It has been a huge blessing. The people I have met along the way. Since the birth of the “OWN It” Magazine the company has birthed four independent magazines (“Off the Bench”, “The Take Back”, “Tables & Tangerines”, and “Echelson Cortisorian” and has adopted another (“Spotlight Sister”). Eight issues published “OWN It” has truly Taken Center Stage. I’m proud of my team and my clients who continue to do an amazing job designing, promoting, producing, and making everything that needs to happen in front and behind the scenes for TCS and for themselves. I have learned to be a more conscious leader, boss, coach, mom and grandmother. I have learned to be a better person because I know the impact my behavior will have on all those I love and serve. God has truly taken me from entrepreneur to CEO. As I have cried out to be better, as I have been open and willing to do better, God has honored me revealing more and more to me on how to live out my calling. I believe He has done so because I didn’t hesitate to trust Him, I didn’t say no, I can’t do

that. When He shifted things in my life, I shifted with Him without hesitating. I have always trusted Him blindly and I have lived the diversified life that I have as a result of it. Since taking the magazine to a fully digital monthly issued magazine I no longer drive Uber or Lyft. It has afforded me once again to fully work for myself. I may drive from time to time just to get out of the house these days and still make money. But I honestly don’t have too. Driving has been fun for me. Again, I have met some amazing people because I didn’t think so highly of myself to not use driving to make a living. I have met extraordinary individuals from top executives to everyday working folks. All great priceless experiences. What I have learned from 2020 is tomorrow isn’t promised and to live life to the fullest because you never know when your time is up and when it is, you want to be at peace with yourself and your world. Another thing I’ve learned is that life is too short, love freely, forgive others (and sometimes that means you have to forgive them and move on, what’s important so that you remain free is to forgive them, so you are free from them not always because they deserve it, but you deserve to live a happy life) so just forgive them and get it over with. Lastly, when God speaks listen and then do what He told you to do. Learn how to exercise your defiant faith, knowing that He would never lead you in the wrong direction. God’s desire for you is to lead you into your greatness, the great life He had planned for you before you were a thought in your mother’s heart. My heart’s d esire is to walk in all God has for me. I speak to my challenges and say defiantly , “If I cannot stop me from fulfilling God’s will in my life, you cannot stop me!” -Marissa

also gave couples the opportunity to seek counsel or professional help to deal with those things that were hidden by the busyness of life, work, children and side hustles- just to name a few before the pandemic. God desires for our relationships to be healed, healthy and whole and if you don’t deal with the issues it’ s impossible to get there. This year HDM continued to push content daily. My prayer everyday was God give me a word that will help even one wife during this season. I was very intentional about what I posted. My focus was not just on being consistent, but also on being purposeful and to meet women in their current season of marriage. HDM also kicked off our first subscription- based program ‘Dope Wives Society’. It was a six-month program that was a huge success. The Society was designed to give women the tools necessary to foster self-love, learn more about their husbands and understand the power of prayer- just to name a few. This will open back up the last quarter of 2021. HDM partnered with several organizations to inspire wives in their marriages and had an opportunity to write two articles for the Black Bride Magazine. We also launched our new program Marriage M.A.Y.B.E. which is a six- week bootcamp designed for single women to uncover truths about who they are becoming before they become involved in a relationship or married. The course focuses on areas that are relevant to personal growth as well as areas that could potentially affect relationship growth: Mindset, Attitude, Your Past, Baggage and Expectations. It was a huge success. The next bootcamp will begin 01/31/21.

Let’s start here: 1. What is present for you right now? Stay away from what you think should be present. Focus on what is. This may be difficult because your mind is generally rehashing the past or rehearsing the future so take your time. Find a private space and be still. Quiet your mind. Calm your emotions and breath.

Tribulation As with any day, week, month, or year life offers various experiences; however, 2020 has yielded unusual experiences due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic forced you to shift in ways that were foreign and uncomfortable. You have experienced loss in different ways with varying degrees of difficulty and a level of isolation that has been extremely challenging to adjust to. This combination has and continues to impact your emotional and mental well-being. As you enter into December a month that is generally filled with expectation of celebrating the holidays with your loved ones, you may be forced to sacrifice family traditions. This sacrifice combined with the shifts that you have already made opens the door to emotions that may materialize in ways that are outside of your normal thoughts and/or behavior. Anger. Frustration, Anxiousness. Higher than normal stress. Lack of patience. And a variety of other emotions but pause and take a deep breath. The truth is that you are no stranger to challenges, loss, isolation, and sacrifice. There have been and will continue to be times in your life where you will encounter a roadblock and are forced to adjust. There have been too many times where you have paid the price for the decision of others and sadly this won’ t be the last time.
