A FATHER’S DAY TRIBUTE

ON MY DAD, BEING A DAD, AND SEEING MY SON BECOME A DAD!

One of the characteristics I remember most about my dad was his impeccable green thumb. Born in 1935, my dad, Galen, grew up learning how to be the best, hardest-working farmer in all of Ohio. Even now, I’m fairly positive that title still belongs to him. I spent the bulk of my childhood years following in his footsteps. I learned how to garden and operate farm equipment but, most importantly, I learned the value of a strong work ethic. His approach to work resembled his approach to raising children. He could snap his finger or look at you a certain way, and you immediately knew what he was asking of you. He was strict, but he wasn’t mean. When my dad wasn’t toiling away at home, he worked in a factory in town. For a couple of summers during my teenage years, I joined him there and completely hated it. When I told my dad, he gave me some advice that I remember often: “If you take an interest in your work, your work will take an interest in you.” It’s a phrase that helped me learn how to find joy in the task I’m completing no matter how much I dislike it. When I was 21, my father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. Since my mom had passed away when I was 12, I already knew the importance of appreciating my parents

— something that a lot of people forget to acknowledge. After my dad passed, I very much missed having someone there to help me make decisions and be on my side. So when I had kids of my own, I wanted to make sure I could do for them what my dad could no longer do for me. My firstborn, Ashlee, made the parenting process all too easy. She was virtually the perfect child and never gave her mom or me any trouble at all. Wes was something else entirely. When I was younger, my mom always said, “I hope you have a son just as ornery as you when you’re older.” She cursed me! While Wes pushed the envelope whenever he could, he was still a good kid. He was funny, too. I remember several moments when, after he’d get himself into trouble and I’d go to discipline him, he’d do or say something to crack me up, and I’d forget why I was even upset with him in the first place. As my kids have grown to become adults themselves, we’ve managed to develop great friendships with one another. Wes started working with me when he was 20, so our relationship has become extremely nuanced. We are father/son business partners, which wouldn’t work for a lot of other families, but Wes and I have made it work. If one of us wins, we both win.

While being a dad is one of my favorite experiences, being a grandfather takes a close second. I’m so fascinated by the next generation. I’ve always been amazed at what Ashlee and Wes could accomplish, but the capabilities and intellect of my grandkids Ethan (8) and Annie (6) are phenomenal. Ethan can put together the most complicated of Lego sets, ones that I can’t even begin to understand, while Annie constantly improves upon her sports and piano playing abilities. I’m sure that my future grandson Noah (Wes and his beautiful wife, Rachel’s, baby) will be just as adept. I know I’m not the only one holding my breath to meet him! To my dad, Wes, Ashlee’s husband, and all the other hardworking dads out there, Happy Father’s Day!

WHY SENIORS ARE FLOCKING TO HOME-SHARING PLATFORMS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EASY MONEY AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

The freedom of retirement certainly comes with its perks, but challenges of post-work living exist as well. Chief among them, for most elderly folks, are fears of social isolation and financial insolvency, as having coworkers and a regular income are not as common in retirement. Perhaps this is why so many retirees are flocking to home-sharing platforms like Airbnb or its seniors-only cousin, The Freebird Club. Airbnb reported last year that the 60-plus age bracket is its fastest-growing demographic worldwide, with the number of senior hosts as much as doubling every year. Home-sharing platforms can be a tremendous boon to a tight retirement budget. It’s an especially attractive option to elderly folks who

find themselves rich in assets but struggling with liquid finances. Home- sharing allows them to tap into these resources. According to Priceonomics, U.S. Airbnb hosts bring in a monthly average of $924. But home-sharing can do more than boost your income. By opening a room in your home to travelers, you’ll encounter all kinds of people you might never otherwise meet, prompting dynamic social interactions and meaningful connections. The rating systems on Airbnb and similar platforms almost entirely prevent would-be troublemakers from entering your property, and users report that when a rare negative experience does occur, the company typically has your back. It’s a great way to stay socially engaged while staving off loneliness.

Best of all, running a modestly successful Airbnb usually doesn’t take much work. It simply requires you to set up a neat, welcoming space, keep in contact with your guests, and ensure the check-in and check-out processes are as straightforward as possible. In fact, senior hosts seem to have a leg up on their younger counterparts, as elderly hosts earn the most consistently positive ratings across the globe. Airbnb and The Freebird Club won’t make you rich, but they’re relatively low effort enterprises that come with some massive benefits. If you’re looking for a little busywork, some extra cash, and a little social interaction in your retirement, hosting may be your best bet!

From the old school dial on the side of the TV screen to the sleek, new smartphone Bluetooth device, changing the TV channel has certainly gotten easier with time. Recently, streaming services have supplanted this technology. People no longer have to painstakingly push the clicker to sift through 40 channels hoping to catch the last 10 minutes of the newest “Game of Thrones” episode. Ever since Hulu and Netflix pioneered the streaming movement, Americans have become much more intentional about their TV viewing habits. They might spend more time binge- watching an entire season of “Parks and Rec” or “New Girl” now that they don’t have to wade through commercials. They are now watching what they want to watch when they want to watch it. Furthermore, now that Disney has announced its new streaming service, viewers have gone from changing the channel on their TV to flipping through the plethora of streaming services until they find something to watch. While changing the channel with a remote has become nearly obsolete, in a way, Disney, Hulu, Amazon, and Netflix (among several others) have become the channels themselves, which brings the viewing experience somewhat full circle. Investing tends to mimic this storyline. New technologies promise to be new waves of finance but, in actuality, they’re usually the same fundamental concepts that drive wealth forward. CONSISTENCY Once you set an investing and savings goal, make sure you stick to it. People who have successful saving habits stick to their goals month after month and year after year. DISCIPLINE After receiving a paycheck, it might feel like you have extra money to spend. But before you let it burn a hole in your pocket, it’s a good idea to take a step back and think of the future. Consider putting capital toward investing goals, like retirement or your grandchildren’s college tuition. THE 3 FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS THAT DRIVE WEALTH FORWARD IS NEWER ALWAYS BETTER? STRATEGY Successful savers/investors know the importance of living below their means. If you are spending beyond your earning capacity, you will more than likely find yourself accumulating debt, which will make it more difficult for you to save. Just as new streaming services have allowed you to be intentional in your approach to watching TV, make sure that you’re being intentional about how you invest and save.

GRILLED BEEF RIBS

Inspired by Saveur magazine

Nothing feels more paleo-appropriate than digging into a giant rack of beef ribs. This largely hands-off recipe requires plenty of hands- on eating, making you feel like one of our cave-dwelling ancestors.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 5-lb. rack of beef ribs • Kosher salt and black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat a charcoal, wood-burning, or gas grill to medium-high. Once heated, move heat source to one side or turn off half of the burners to create an indirect heat zone. 2. Season ribs with salt and pepper and char on the hotter side of the grill, turning occasionally, for 12–15 minutes. Once charred, transfer to the other side of grill and cook until the thickest part of the rib reaches 130 F, about 2 1/2–3 hours. 3. Let meat rest for 15 minutes. If desired, serve alongside grilled veggies.

CELEBRATE NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY DAY TIPS FOR CAPTURING THE BEST OUTDOOR PHOTO!

CROP FOR TEXTURE Sometimes the difference between an amazing shot and a mediocre one is distance. When photographing nature, try zooming in or moving geographically closer and cropping close on your subject. This could be tree bark, a leaf, the forest floor, or a lizard’s skin. The fine details of your subject can often create stunning images.

Nature Photography Day is June 15, and it continues to garner enthusiasm with each passing year. It’s been designated by the North America Nature Photography Association as a day to promote the enjoyment of outdoor photography and to explain how nature photography can advance conservation efforts locally and worldwide. Almost everyone has access to a sufficient camera with smartphones, but not everyone knows how to best capture a beautiful nature scene. Here are some tips to help! FIND THE ANGLES Landscape photography isn’t about appealing to someone else’s sense of style; it’s about shooting what makes you happy. Take some time to study the work of other nature photographers you enjoy. What angles do they use? What colors do they coordinate within the frame? How close do they get to their subject? Try something different. Go against

the grain, use a different angle, shoot a close-up where others would shoot wide angle. Find a good starting place and experiment a little. HARNESS THE LIGHT Nature photos often look great in the morning or evening light, but the type of lighting you use is often dictated by the scene you are trying to capture. It’s generally accepted that side-lighting, where the sun is coming from either side of the camera, is the most desirable for
