Dealing with Disruption: Challenges and Choices for 2020 *THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 5:00PM - 6:00PM PANEL DISCUSSION *Please note early start time. With the dawn of a new decade comes a string of geopolitical and economic challenges for leaders on both sides of the Atlantic. The University of Freiburg is pleased to welcome distinguished alumni Dr. Peter Wittig, German Ambassador to the United Kingdom; Dr. Pinelopi Koujianou Goldberg, Chief Economist of theWorld Bank Group; and Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, Rector of the University of Freiburg and President of Eucor, the European Campus, to discuss how the impact of disruptive forces, such as Brexit, economic instability, and tensions surrounding the concept of a European versus national identity, will shape European, transatlantic, and global relations in the new year. Dr. Jackson Janes, President Emeritus of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies and Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund, will moderate this timely conversation. Free for Members and Guests. The Friends of Freiburg University and The Princeton Club of NewYork proudly co-host this event. 7,000 Fields Science Forgot THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM DISCUSSION Research on rare diseases has more to offer than meets the eye, including the promise of discoveries that could help advance all of medicine. A small number of well-known disorders get the lion’s share of the attention while more than 7,000 diseases classified as rare or “orphaned” go largely unstudied. Ethical questions aside, by ignoring obscure maladies, we may be forfeiting the opportunity to learn crucial information that can be translated and applied to other conditions. In fact, scientific experience shows that the information gleaned by looking under the hood of a rare disease often has implications for science at large. Increasingly, those pursuing this work, like Rockefeller University scientists Dr. Sanford Simon and Dr. Elias Coutavas, are finding unique windows through which to observe the maneuverings of genes, cells, and biological systems, empowering them to crack open new fields of investigation and advancing medicine in unforeseen ways.Ten years ago, Dr. Simon’s motivation for research became personal, when his daughter, Elana, was diagnosed at 12 with a rare pediatric liver cancer. Following

Plaintiff in Chief WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM TALK

extensive research, Dr. Simon and his team, including his daughter and son, identified an important gene mutation and are now launching the first clinical trial of a novel therapeutic strategy that may provide a roadmap for treatment of many different pediatric and adolescent cancers. Dr. Sanford Simon (’77) received his PhD from NYU and is Head of Laboratory of Cellular Biophysics at The Rockefeller University. A main focus of the Simon Lab is studying pediatric cancer and how individual genomic changes in a single cell results in transformation. Dr. Elias Coutavas has a PhD from NYU in cell and molecular biology. He is Head of Lab at Rockefeller University’s Nobel Prize-winning Blobel Lab of Cellular Biology where he studied the characterization of nuclear pore complex proteins and their roles in nucleocytoplasmictransport and cellular homeostasis. Host:Alessandra Gagliardi. Members: Free; Guests: $15. Harnessing Grit in Children and Leveraging Grit as Adults TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM PRESENTATION Dr. SamanthaWinokur will discuss the concept of grit, which is the combination of power and perseverance for long-term goals that has been shown to be the single most important factor that leads to success. Dr.Winokur will discuss how grit develops in children and adolescents, leads people to achieve their goals, and provides strategies to promote grit in your children and yourselves. Dr. SamanthaWinokur recently moved to Philadelphia where she maintains a private practice specializing in treating children, adolescents, and adults struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship issues, life transitions, and parenting after maintaining a similar practice in NewYork City. Prior to moving to Philadelphia, she was the psychologist at the Convent of the Sacred Heart as well as the Gateway School of NewYork. She has published numerous academic papers, edited books, and given talks and presentations around a variety of topics including child development, understanding learning disabilities, and the impact of stress. Dr.Winokur graduated with honors fromTulane University and completed her doctorate in clinical psychology and certification in school psychology at the Institute for Graduate Clinical Psychology at Widener University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. Host:Wendy Gerber. Members: Free; Guests: $15.

A former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NewYork, James Zirin, will discuss his latest book, Plaintiff in Chief . Zirin’s research began in 2015, soon after Trump announced he would seek the presidency on the Republican Party ballot. In this comprehensive analysis of Donald Trump’s legal history, Zirin examines approximately 3,500 lawsuits filed by Trump, against Trump, or, in some instances, cross-filed by the opposing parties. Zirin deconstructs Trump’s litigations as a window into the president’s character, morality, and a political worldview shaped in the courtroom. Mr. Zirin (’61) served under the legendary Robert Morgenthau in the Criminal Division of the Southern District of NewYork. His writing appears in major periodicals, including Forbes, The London Times , The Washington Times , The Nation , and the NewYork Law Journal . He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A graduate of Princeton University, he received

his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. Host: Christine Loomis. Members: Free; Guests: $15.

Also featured are Ellington’s beloved arrangements of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and Benny Carter’s iconic “Symphony in Riffs.” Throughout the program each band member will perform, both as individual soloists and in the creation of “head arrangements,” wherein band members collaborate for on-the-spot group improvisations. 400: An African–American Musical Portrait WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM PRESENTATION In honor of Black History month this February, Avery Sharpe’s 400: An African American Musical Portrait , is a sweeping musical-historical epic that commemorates 400 years, (1619- 2019), since the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to the shores of the Colony of Virginia. Tracing that history through music, Sharpe seeks to further the storied legacy of those 400 years, bringing his own imagination and compositional gifts to the endeavor. In this presentation, Sharpe will use a combination of storytelling, imagery, and musical performance to guide guests through the centuries: from the beginnings of chattel slavery to the Civil War and Reconstruction, through the Great Migration and theWorldWars to the Civil Rights Era, the Obama presidency and the present day. As 400 proceeds chronologically, each step in the historical narrative is mirrored by a journey through musical styles including African music, spirituals, gospel, ragtime, blues, be-bop, and soul. Avery Sharpe is an Artist Associate in Jazz Bass, and Jazz Coach at Williams College. He is also Faculty Advisor for theWilliams Gospel Choir and affiliated faculty for Africana Studies. “I joined the Club for a number of reasons. Two of my sons went to schools affiliated with the Club (Evan,Washington University in St. Louis, ’19 and Andrew, Amherst, ’21), as did I (NYU Law, ’94), so the Club was a natural choice. I have also enjoyed being a guest at the fitness facilities and attending various Princeton Club events over the years, including Terrace dining and speaking engagements. I work as an attorney in midtown, walking distance from the Club, so it’s also a nice spot for client lunches or to stop by for a drink after work. I look forward to getting to know more Club members and learning about their careers and life stories – it’s a remarkably diverse group. In addition, I look forward to attending more of the culinary events at the Club, as I am definitely a NYC foodie!”
