Dear Members, Welcome back! The warm summer winds are still blowing but fall’s cooler air is just around the corner. Fall has always been a time of reunion at the Club. Reconnecting with friends and fellow members, sharing vacation stories over lunch, attending an event, getting back in shape (try one of our new Pelotons), or simply getting down to business. It’s a second home for so many of us! We are excited to soon unveil our new, state-of-the-art business center. Comfortable work stations, Hot Desks, and boosted cell phone booths will be available for members. Next door to the Business Center is the new Member’s Lounge featuring a restored vintage bar, wood paneling, and artwork. Together, these new spaces are designed to meet your needs for comfort, convenience, and camaraderie. We hope that you’ll find the Lounge to be a lovely escape away from the hectic pace of the city, perfect for conversation and socializing. For members who are seeking quieter pursuits, a library and reading room is now available on the 7th floor in addition to the quiet areas of the business center. The Program and Food and Beverage Committees have an exciting line-up of events in store for us this season as well as some traditional favorites. On September 11, the Club welcomes Director of the MoMA, Glenn Lowry,Williams ’76 to discuss the museums expansion project and reopening this October. On September 16, the Club welcomes JP Morgan’s Joyce Chang, Princeton ’90, Chair of Global Research and Liz Myers, Princeton, ’92, Managing Director and Head of Global Equity Markets as they discuss navigating business with China. Just ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, The Olympic Experience panel discussion, scheduled for November 11, will share some of the challenges amateur athletes face while training for their “moment”. On Tuesday, October 10, in celebration of Italian Heritage Month, we pay tribute to the cult-movie classic, Big Night , with author Joseph Tropiano, who together with his cousin, Stanley Tucci, wrote the script for what was to become one of the greatest food scenes in film making history. A Sundance Jury Review winner, the movie inspired our own Chef Michael’s (see Chef ’s Corner, page 6) culinary journey. Also joining us for this five-course feast – interspersed with movie clips, fine wines, and behind the scenes stories from the film – is Italian food historian, Francine Segan, who is teaming up with Chef Michael to put their own authentic twist on the evening’s offerings. Cheers to these last few days of summer! I look forward to welcoming our new members to Orientation on September 24 and honoring our 50Year Members’ at the annual Luncheon on October 8. This year’s Annual Meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 22 and I hope to see you there. Don’t forget to save the date for our All Ivy Halloween Ball on October 25 and our traditional All Member Holiday Party on December 17. There is so much in store for us this fall. Rocco Staino, Director of the Empire State Center of the Book, will interview both authors and explore how their similar Ivy backgrounds helped them to discover success within their passion. Anne Gardiner Perkins is an award-winning historian and expert in higher education. She graduated fromYale University (1981), where she won the Porter Prize in history and was the first woman elected editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News .With 2019 marking 50 years sinceYale admitted women, her book Yale Needs Women: How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant is a timely account that gives us insight into the past and future of academic institutions. Joanne Ramos graduated with a BA from Princeton University (1995). After working in investment banking and private- equity investing for several years, she became a staff writer at The Economist . She currently serves on the board of The Moth and recently released her novel, The Farm . Pulling from her own experiences of exploitation in investment banking, The Farm follows the story of a “gestational retreat” where women are promised a large sum of money in exchange for 9 months of their life, only to find that this seemingly idyllic resort is not what it seems. Please join the PrincetonWomen’s Network at The Princeton Club for an intimate conversation between Terri Sewell and classmate Alexandra Lebenthal.Terri will share her insights on Princeton, Congress, and more as she revisits her riveting speech from the She Roars Conference held on campus last fall. An undeniable force of nature from the time she arrived at Princeton until graduation four years later with the Class of 1986, Terri became the first African American elected to Congress from Alabama in 2010. Tigers with Green Stripes MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 6:30PM RECEPTION, 7:00PM LECTURE America and the world are faced with unprecedented climate change consequences.The good news is that climate awareness is growing and is motivating investors, innovators, students and a number of government officials to find viable solutions to the problem. Peter Fusaro and Steven Hall address this issue from different perspectives. Since Earth Day in 1970, Peter Fusaro , founder of Global Change Associates and host of theWall Street Green Summit at the Club, has worked on the macro economic space of clean energy in policy, investment, and technology. Steven Hall of Chandler LLC has worked on the other end with boots on the ground implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. He managed the major renovation of the club completed in 2010 that included a cogeneration system that reduced its energy consumption by 50%. Steve has since specialized in creative innovative energy solutions for residential, commercial, and municipal projects. Both play a major role in JP Morgan’s expansion in China by allocating resources in the world’s 2nd largest equities market and 3rd largest bond market.Together, they will address the myths and realities of leadership, culture, trade, tariffs, and finance. Ms. Chang manages 920 research professionals located in 26 countries. Her global research team has been named #1 for 2017 and 2018 by Institutional Investor, and in 2014, Ms. Chang was inducted into the Fixed Income Analyst Society Hall of Fame. She has been named one of the Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Finance by American Banker since 2012. She earned a Masters of Public Affairs from Princeton and a BA from Columbia. Ms. Myers joined Equity Capital Markets in 1997 and has headed it since 2012. She is ranked among the Top 20 Most Powerful Woman in Finance. In 2017, Ms. Myers’s team raised $240B in equity capital for public and private companies and was the #1 underwriter for IPOs in the US and Latin America. January 1996. I was just promoted to sous chef at theWaldorf Astoria when I remember seeing a television ad for this movie called Big Night . Finally! A movie about what I love – good food, hospitality and fraternity. Big Night is one of my favorite movies. If you haven’t seen it, treat yourself and make sure you see it before October 10th! The movie had a profound effect on me and how I perform as a Chef. It is about food as a language. A language you can use to create, seduce, and aspire to perfection. What made this film a favorite of mine was its authenticity.There are dozens of foodie movies out there, and only a handful worth watching.This is the best. Why? Because Primo, the faultless Chef (played by Tony Shaloub) and Secondo, his people pleasing brother (Tucci) are so well matched – the casting, the set, and story line are perfect. Some say that Big Night played a role in our Chef obsession and helped predict the future of the restaurant business. Lidia Bastianich, author and co-owner of acclaimed NYC restaurant Del Posto, spent year’s introducing Italian regionality, authenticity and meal structure in her cookbooks, not wanting to force but to cajole her customers into her love of Italian culture and food. Like the Tropianos/Tucci family, my own family’s Sunday dinners, whether at my grandmother’s or my inlaws, were very structured. Antipasto followed by pasta, roast, salad, cheeses and desserts, and finally, fruit and nuts. My family would gasp as my Grandmother brought out course after course. The final scene is epic. No words. Just two brothers, disappointed and broken. What brings them together at the end is a simple, properly made omelet, as authentic as the movie. I can’t wait to share this evening with you and hear from Joe and Francine on October 10. See you at my Big Night! – Chef Michael

THE PLOT: Two Italian immigrant brothers, struggle to keep their authentic Italian restaurant on the Jersey Shore afloat in the 1950’s. A Big Night of food is planned in honor of a special guest who is sure to drum up enough business to keep the restaurant open and even thrive. Things don’t go as planned though. Primo, the chef and a brilliant perfectionist scoffs at “Americanized” italian food. Primo’s brother, Secondo runs the dining room and wants to give the customer what they want to bring in money. “When my cousin Stanley Tucci and I began developing the script that became Big Night , we didn’t set out to write a food movie.We wanted to tell the story of what it takes for two brothers from Italy to make it in America running an “authentic” Italian restaurant. But after the film’s shoot and during the editing process, it was clear that the food had become another character in the film.” – Joe Tropiano

The Plaza Stories WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 6:30PM RECEPTION, 7:00PM LECTURE THE PLAZA is the account of one vaunted NewYork City address that has become synonymous with wealth and scandal, opportunity and tragedy.With glamour on the surface and strife behind the scenes, it is the story of how one hotel became a mirror reflecting New York’s place at the center of the country’s cultural narrative for over a century. Journalist Julie Satow will share how this thrilling, unforgettable history of one illustrious hotel has defined our understanding of money and glamour, from the Gilded Age to the Go-Go Eighties to today’s Billionaire Row. From the moment in 1907 when NewYork millionaire Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt strode through the Plaza Hotel’s revolving doors to become its first guest, to the afternoon in 2007 when a mysterious Russian oligarch paid a record price for the hotel’s largest penthouse, the eighteen-story white marble edifice at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street has radiated wealth and luxury. Poster House proudly presents Baptized by Beefcake: The Golden Age of Hand-Painted Movie Posters from Ghana SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19, 10:30AM Exclusive museum tour by exhibition co-curator, ErnieWolfe III,Williams ’72. Before the advent of digital printing, self-taught Ghanaian artists merged art, cinema, and practical necessity in the creation of hand-painted movie posters. These posters, uniquely painted on repurposed flour sack cloth and ultimately replaced by digital reproduction, may have never been known to the larger public were it not for the efforts of ErnieWolfe III, a dealer in African art and Los Angeles gallery owner. They represent the noble attempt by the best and brightest Ghanaian sign painters of a generation to resist the inevitable onslaught of technology and globalization that would eventually put them out of business by the year 2000.“Crowd Pullers”, as they were affectionately known in Ghana, introduced the Ghanaian public toWorld Cinema, and thereby, to the world at large. This extensive exhibition of approximately 60 posters is the result of three decades of fieldwork and scholarship by ErnieWolfe III.This exhibition opens October 17 and ends on January 5, 2020. Enjoy an evening of art and stories as related by Christine Coulson (MA,Williams ‘93) who began her career at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1991 as a summer intern. She returned in 1994, and over the next 25 years rose through the ranks of the Museum, ultimately working as Chief Advisor to the Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Coulson’s new novel, Metropolitan Stories , introduces us to the hidden side of The Met. Behind the myriad of art works exists another world: the offices and storerooms that are home to the Museum’s devoted staff of 2,200 people. An ode to this private side of The Met, Coulson’s book unfolds into a discovery of larger-than-life characters, the downside of survival, and the powerful voices of the art itself. Join us for a lively insiders conversation about art, museums, memory, and heroes of all kinds. An Evening with Maestro Eve Queler TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM INTERVIEW

Maestro Eve Queler, an Internationally Renowned Conductor, shares her experiences Come hear classical music critic George Loomis interview Maestro Queler about her ground- breaking work with Opera Orchestra of NewYork. Recognized as a pioneer in the world of opera, Ms. Queler founded the orchestra in 1971 and specialized in high quality performances of seldom-heard operatic masterpieces and of familiar works cast with singers NewYork would not otherwise hear. She conducted over 100 operas in concert at Carnegie Hall and worldwide, particularly in Europe and South America. Among the legendary opera singers Maestro Queler conducted are Renee Fleming, Placido Domingo and Montserrat Caballe. Ms. Queler’s memoir relates how she ventured into the male-dominated world of orchestral conducting in the 1960s. She soon found herself invited to guest conduct orchestras and opera companies all over the world. It is the story of her struggles and determination to enter the field, along with the accomplishments, support, and recognition she encountered. Foremost among her numerous accolades is the 2010 National Endowment for the Arts Lifetime Achievement award. She graduated from the Mannes School of Music, where she studied piano and conducting. The Club welcomes Author Jeffrey Sussman, to share his expertise on the sport of boxing. Enter the ring with Sussman as he guides you through countless tales of how the mob corrupted the sport of boxing through the 20th Century. His book, Boxing and the Mob:The Notorious History of the Sweet Science , is the first to cover a century of fixed fights, paid-off referees, greedy managers, and misused boxers. Organized crime and the world of boxing will be intertwined with absorbing detail in this presentation of a colorful slice of American history. Jeffrey Sussman is also the author of two other books about boxing: Rocky Graziano: Fists, Fame, and Fortune ; and Max Baer and Barney Ross: Jewish Heroes of Boxing . Members: Free; Guests: $15. Ever wonder what it is like to be an Olympic athlete? To train, compete, and maybe even win at the highest level? With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics fast approaching, the spotlight is once again beginning to shine on the world’s top amateur athletes. Princeton, in fact, has many such athletes training right in their back yard, with the US Rowing training center based out of the Princeton boathouse.We are delighted to host a panel of experienced guests to shed light on the Olympic experience as they discuss the challenges faced while training for the games, and the lessons we all can take from that journey into personal and professional life.Though we will be adding a few more speakers and a moderator, we are privileged to welcome: Carol Brown , Princeton ’75 – 4x Medalist at Worlds, Bronze in 1976 Montreal Games in the Women’s 8+ rowing event. INSIGHTS BY DIRECTOR GLENN D. LOWRY WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 6:30PM RECEPTION, 7:00PM PROGRAM The Museum of Modern Art is currently in the midst of an expansion project that will open in October of this year, following the brief closure that started in June. The expansion, developed by MoMA with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with architectural firm, Gensler, adds more than 40,000 square feet of gallery space and enables the Museum to exhibit significantly more art in new and interdisciplinary ways, increasing the Museum’s footprint by one-third. “Inspired by Alfred Barr’s original vision to be an experimental museum in NewYork, the real value of this expansion is not just more space, but space that allows us to rethink the experience of art in the Museum,” said Glenn D. Lowry,The David Rockefeller Director of The Museum of Modern Art. Mr. Lowry,Williams ’76, has been MoMA’s Director since 1995 and will take us inside the New MoMA for a preview of what is to come. “We have an opportunity to re-energize and expand upon our founding mission—to welcome everyone to experience MoMA as a laboratory for the study and presentation of the art of our time, across all visual arts.” The Studio in the heart of the Museum will feature live programming and performances that react to, question, and challenge histories of modern art and the current cultural moment. An innovative second-floor Platform for education will invite visitors to connect with art that explores new ideas about the present, past, and future. A street-level Projects gallery, free and open to all on the expanded ground floor, will better connect the Museum to NewYork City and bring art closer to people on the streets of midtown Manhattan. The Collection’s reinstallation will reveal a presentation that highlights the creative affinities and frictions produced by displaying painting, sculpture, architecture, design, photography, media, performance, film, and works on paper together.
