PRESIDENT Dear Member, The holidays are my favorite time of year and we have many celebrations to look forward to this season. Our Thanksgiving Buffet will be held on November 22, followed by Chef Michael’s Holiday Brunch on December 15,The Members’ Holiday Bash on December 18 and our Not Quite Christmas Eve Dinner on December 21. In addition, we look forward to the NewYear when we host our Young Alumni’s Annual InterClub Snow Ball on January 26.The Club will be bustling this winter so be sure to reserve your space early. If you need a break from shopping and sight-seeing with the family, come by the Bar & Grill for some Holiday Cheer: Complimentary Coffee, Cookies & More every Saturday in December leading up to the holidays. And while you’re out shopping, please help us give back to our neighboring communities by participating in our Annual Toys for Tots drive. It was great to see so many of you from Princeton, NYU,Williams, Columbia and other schools in attendance at the Annual Meeting on October 23.There was an informative discussion and video presentation of the new lounge/business center renovation beginning in the NewYear.We also took the time to honor six employees for their 20 years of service: Waiter Mohammed “Saleh” Ahmed,Waiter Mohammed Alin, Room Attendant Maxima Montfort,Waiter “Mosh” Ullah, Grill Chef, Edward Ventosilla andWaiter Mohammed Salam. These employees have shown great dedication and have embraced the Club as their second home working tirelessly to make the Club a better place for all of us. Our thanks and congratulations to all of them. As a gentle reminder, the holidays are an excellent time to show the Club’s employees your appreciation for their dedicated service throughout the year.The Annual Holiday Fund is shared with all Club employees.You may use the envelope provided in this issue, pick one up at the Front Desk, or email our accounting department with your gift. The holiday season provides time to reflect and give thanks. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as the Club’s President and I would like to thank the Club’s General Manager, Jason Pallen, and his executive team, as well as the members of the President’s Council, the Board of Governors, the Advisory Board and the Club’s committees for dedicating their time and skills to help provide a rewarding and satisfying member experience. SPECIAL EVENT The Craft ofWriting: Jodi Picoult in Conversation with Mary Morris THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 7:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 8:00PM DISCUSSIONWITH Q&A Jodi Picoult, best-selling novelist, and acclaimed writer, Mary Morris, Picoult’s former creative writing professor at Princeton, engage in a lively conversation on the craft of writing. Jodi Picoult (’87) is ranked in the Top 10 of Princeton’s 25 most influential living alumni and has received numerous awards for her writing. She is the author of twenty-five novels including My Sister’s Keeper , Nineteen Minutes , The Storyteller, Leaving Time and the #1 million- copy best-seller, Small Great Things . Her newest book, A Spark of Light , explores another divisive issue: abortion; in this novel, ordinary lives intersect during a heart-stopping crisis at a women’s health center. Picoult also wrote five issues of the “Wonder Woman” comic book series for DC Comics. Next summer, Between the Lines , a book co-written with her daughter, Samantha van Leer, is scheduled to make its Off Broadway debut. Picoult studied with Mary Morris while at Princeton and credits Morris for launching her career. Morris, who received the GeorgeW. Perkins fellowship from the Council of the Humanities, taught CreativeWriting at Princeton from 1980 to 1993. Starting out as mentor and student, Picoult and Morris’ relationship has become a deep friendship. Morris is the author of numerous works of fiction, including the novels, Gateway to the Moon , The Jazz Palace , A Mother’s Love and House Arrest , and of nonfiction, including the travel memoir classic, Nothing to Declare: Memoirs of a Woman Traveling Alone . FEATURED EVENT Albert Einstein:The God Letter A Conversation FeaturingWalter Isaacson and Viewing Hosted by Christie’s FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 6:30PM CONVERSATIONWITH Q&A, 7:30PM WINE RECEPTION WITH PANELISTS ANDVIEWING OF THE GOD LETTER In December, Christie’s will be auctioning Albert Einstein’s celebrated “God Letter.” Addressed to the philosopher, Eric Gutkind, the letter fuses Einstein’s thoughts on religion, his Jewish identity and his own search for meaning in life. It is considered one of the definitive statements in the religion versus science debate and is one of the most famous Einstein letters extant.To coincide with its sale, the Princeton Club in conjunction with Christie’s will host a viewing of the letter and panel of speakers featuring Einstein biographer Walter Isaacson, philosopher Rebecca Newberger Goldstein (*77) and Christie’s senior specialist Peter Klarnet. Walter Isaacson, University Professor of History at Tulane, has been CEO of the Aspen Institute, Chairman of CNN and Editor of TIME magazine. He is the author of several biographies including Leonardo da Vinci , Steve Jobs , Einstein: His Life and Universe , Benjamin Franklin: An American Life and Kissinger: A Biography . Isaacson is a graduate of Harvard College and Pembroke College of Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He is also Chair Emeritus of Teach for America, which recruits recent college graduates to teach in under-served communities. Rebecca Newberger Goldstein (*77) is a philosopher and novelist. Her award-winning study of the philosopher, Baruch Spinoza, has brought the 17th century figure right into the middle of the heated contemporary debate concerning science and religion. In addition to having received the MacArthur Prize, popularly known as the “genius” award, Goldstein has received the Free-Thought Heroine by the Freedom from the Religion Foundation and the Richard Dawkins Award from the Atheist Alliance of America. She graduated from Barnard College and earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Princeton. Peter Klarnet is the Senior Specialist for Americana, Books and Manuscripts at Christie’s. Founded in London in 1766 by James Christie, Christie’s has conducted the most celebrated auctions worldwide in over 80 categories, including all areas of fine and decorative arts, jewelry, photographs, collectibles and wine. FEATURED EVENT DividedWe Fall: Restoring the Commonweal WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM TALK The nation is now no less divided than it was before November 8, 2016. Each side sees the other as un-American aliens.We share a land but not a commonweal. It took decades to reach this turbulent impasse and there is no overnight solution. There is, however, a way to begin. Hodding Carter III, (*57), a Princeton UniversityWoodrowWilson School graduate, has been deeply involved in public life and public affairs journalism since he went home to Mississippi from the Marines in 1959. A prize-winning newspaperman at his family’s daily during the height of the civil rights revolution, he led efforts to eliminate segregation at the 1976 Democratic National Convention, securing Mississippi’s first interracial delegation. Carter joined President Jimmy Carter’s administration as U.S Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs between 1977 and 1980. Nationally, Carter is perhaps best remembered as the spokesman for the U.S. State Department during the Iran hostage crisis in the late 1970s.Thereafter he became the Op-Ed columnist for The Wall Street Journal and a regular participant on “This Week with David Brinkley” as well as other TV news and public affairs shows. In the early 1990s, he was a tenured professor at the University of Maryland. Carter served on the Princeton University Board of Trustees between 1983 and 1998. He has won numerous national journalism awards, including four Emmys, and is the author of two books and contributor to nine others. Carter was named president and CEO of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation until 2006, to become a Professor of Public Policy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he currently lives. HostWendy Gerber. Free for members; $15 for guests. Architecture, Design and Cultural Identity TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM TALK World-renowned Turkish architect, Emre Arolat, brings his unique and informed perspective to discuss the changing world view of architecture and the role of the architect in shaping the 21st century built environment. Arolat’s projects are driven by the relationship between the built and natural environment, the local culture and his invaluable knowledge and experience, combined with his intuitive creative approach to design. Arolat comes from a long family architectural tradition and established his own firm, EAA-Emre Arolat Architecture, in Istanbul in 2004. His work has received international recognition with the RIBA International Prize for Architecture, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture. He was recently the Norman R. Foster Visiting Professor at theYale School of Architecture. Biography of a Book:Writing the History of Gutenberg’s Bible TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM LECTURE The Gutenberg Bible is widely recognized as Europe’s first printed book, a book that forever changed the world. Editio princeps: A History of the Gutenberg Bible is the first book to tell the whole story of Europe’s first printed edition, describing its creation at Mainz circa 1455, its impact on fifteenth-century life and religion, its fall into oblivion during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and its rediscovery and rise to worldwide fame during the centuries thereafter. Along the way it introduces the colorful cast of proud possessors, crafty booksellers, observant travelers and scholarly librarians who shaped our understanding of Europe’s first printed book. The author, Eric Marshall White, PhD, became Curator of Rare Books at Princeton University Library in 2015, after eighteen years as Curator of Special Collections at Southern Methodist University’s Bridwell Library.
