STRIKING A BALANCE W ith Mother’s Day fast approaching, I’ve spent some time reflecting on my childhood. There’s so much that my mother did for me that I didn’t take notice of or properly appreciate as a kid. But now that I’m a parent myself, I find I can relate to my mom a lot more, and I recognize all she’s done for my brother and me.

What My Mother Taught Me About Parenting

It’s easy to say you appreciate your mother’s support. But until you raise kids of your own, it’s hard to grasp the mundane, everyday challenges parents face. I know I took this kind of support for granted when I was younger.

Yet, in hindsight, this daily routine was largely a thankless job. Oftentimes, the best she would get was to hear my brother or me admit, “I’m glad I did that.” But even this implied that our

Thinking back to when I was a kid, there were a lot of important things I just didn’t want to do. Getting up for school, doing homework, going to basketball practice — it all felt like such a hassle. Thankfully, Mom was there to push me to excel. She put up with my complaining, and when I tried to argue or question her, she had an unassailable response: “Because I said so.” Fair enough. Now that I have to go through the same rigmarole with my kids, I realize what a delicate balancing act my mom had been performing. She wanted me to succeed while teaching me personal responsibility. She had to know when to be firm and when to let me learn a lesson the hard way.

achievements at school or on the basketball court were our own doing. As a parent, I’ve learned not to expect any vocalized gratitude, either. Seeing your kids succeed is its own reward. While I may have resented my mom in the moment for pushing me to succeed, I’m now truly grateful for what she did. Her coaching not only made me a better student and athlete, it helped prepare me for the real world. I can only hope to provide the same for my kids. Fortunately, my mother is in good health. In fact, she lives about five minutes away. We’ll most likely skip the crowds this Mother’s Day and have a nice luncheon at one of our houses. That way, the kids can run around and play with the dog. To all the mothers out there, hats off to you. Your kids may not recognize all you do for them on a daily basis, but I assure you, it will mean the world to them someday. I know it did for me.

It’s hard to be an advocate for your child’s success without being overly controlling. Sometimes you make the right call; sometimes you don’t. And you usually don’t find out what kind of call it was until long after the fact. It’s a balance that I’ve come to realize is extremely hard to get right. But Mom really knew when to hold them and when to fold them.

That’s why we’re excited to offer our Strength & Balance Small Group Training Programs. Over this six-week course, our expert physical therapists will be able to teach you exercises and stretches that will improve your ability to move with confidence. The course will be broken up into groups based on your mobility needs to ensure that you’re comfortable, safe, and that you still get the individualized attention you’ve come to expect from us. Offering these courses as a group allows our therapists to help more people at once with a reduced price. SAUTÉED ZUCCHINI & SQUASH WI TH FETA

Zucchini and summer squash are arriving on grocery store shelves. Here is a great way to take these humble, delicious vegetables to the next level. This easy dish is perfect for early summer.

INGREDIENTS

1 zucchini

• • •

2 teaspoons fresh thyme 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

1 summer squash

1/2 medium red onion

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut zucchini into 1/4-inch-thick semicircles. Dice onion. 2. Heat a large skillet to medium high. Add olive oil, onion, and thyme. 3. Once onion is soft (about 2 minutes), add zucchini and squash. Season with salt and pepper; cook 4–5 minutes until squash barely begins to caramelize. 4. Place in serving bowl and top with feta.

Several days later, after the Braziers had settled in with their Wolcott relatives, Bobbie the Scotch collie was attacked by a pack of dogs. The dogs scared Bobbie away, and despite a long search around Wolcott, the family was unable to find any trace of the collie. The search continued throughout their stay, but time ran out, and the Braziers had to return home to Oregon without their beloved Bobbie. What the Braziers didn’t know was that Bobbie had been searching for his family as well. He may have been scared away, but he was determined to get back home. And so began his incredible journey. He turned his head west and began walking. And walking. With winter setting in, Bobbie had a monumental task ahead. Bobbie swam across numerous rivers. He trekked across the Great Plains and over the Rocky Mountains. While we will never know exactly what Bobbie endured, we know he made it home. Over 2,500 miles later, in February, 1924, a tired and beaten-down pup arrived home in Silverton, Oregon, to a stunned family. Bobbie the Wonder Dog’s story made national headlines. He received a medal and the key to the city, and he became a silent movie star in the film “The Call of the West.” Today, you can visit Bobbie’s memorial near his home in Oregon.

Imagine America in 1923. Yankee Stadium opened its doors for the very first time. Walt and Roy Disney founded The Walt Disney Company. The first issue of Time magazine hit newsstands. President Warren G. Harding died of a heart attack in office, and Vice President Calvin Coolidge became the 30th president. And Bobbie the Wonder Dog trekked 2,550 miles to return home. Of all the stories to come out of 1923, Bobbie’s may be the most incredible. It all started with a road trip. The Brazier family of Silverton, Oregon, decided to take a road trip to visit relatives in Wolcott, Indiana. Mom, Dad, their two daughters, and their Scotch collie piled in the family Overland Red Bird touring car and headed across preinterstate-highway-system America.
