off for 20 minutes at a time during the first 24-72 hours after the pain develops. After that, consider soaking in hot water, such as taking a warm bath, to further soothe your muscles. 2. Don’t underestimate the power of resting! Your body relies on sleep just as much as your brain. You need to get plenty of sleep to keep your stress level at a minimum—and that includes your physical stress level.Aim tosleepbetween7-9hourseverynight.The moreactivityyouengage in, themoresleepyouneed. 3. Keep your body in good shape with regular exercise. It may seem counterintuitive to cut down on pain by moving more, but exercise is a really good way to reduce aches and pains. When you exercise every day, you are able to train your muscles for more movement, and thereby reduce aches and pains. Keeping active, staying rested, and being smart with hot and cold therapy create a trifecta for healthy management of aches and pains, but they aren’t going to solve the bigger problems. When aches and pains start to grow severe, or chronic, then it is time to reach out to a professional for support. Physiotherapy is the bestway to reduceachesandpainsbecause it takes into accountacombinationofactiveandpassivestrategies to help tackle the cause of your pain.

Pain medications can reduce the severity of aches and pains for a little while, but they don’t do anything to resolve the issue. There are things that you can do at home that can alleviate your aches and pains, helping to reduce the severity of your discomfort while also reducing the likelihood that the pain will return. Don’t just complain about those aches and pains. Start doing something about them. Here is a quick rundown of things that you can do at home that can reduce your daily pain: 1. There are a lot of different reasons as to why you may start feeling aches and pains. Muscle pain will occur whenever your muscles start to grow. To build more muscle mass, your muscles have to stretch, and lactic acid can pour into the lining of your muscles to cause a burning sensation. More movement will push that acid out, helping you to experience relief, and in time your muscles will develop increased elasticity, and the burning won’t be so severe. Build-up of tension from stress or overuse, and muscle pain from poor posture can also contribute to regular pain. A physiotherapist can take a comprehensive assessment to help determine what may be the primary cause behind your aches and pains. Working with a physiotherapist can help you develop a new approach to managing your aches and pains. Your physiotherapy program will likely take into account strategies like hydrotherapy, deep tissue massage, guided stretching and targeted movements to help you experience ongoing relief from regular discomfort. QUICK & EASY HEALTHY RECIPES

Pan Seared Lemon Chicken

Miracle Red Juice – 2 Servings

INGREDIENTS •4 boneless chicken breasts, (1-1¼ lb) •Salt & freshly ground pepper, to taste •3 tsp extra-virgin olive oil, or canola oil, divided •3 cloves garlic,

INGREDIENTS •2 large beets •4 long carrots •2 apples PREVENTS •Acne •Heart Attacks •Cancer STRENGTHENS • Immunity

minced •1 cup reduced- sodium chicken broth •2 tsp flour •2 tbsp chopped fresh dill, divided •1 tbsp lemon juice •½ white onion, diced

•6 celery stalks •2 limes or lemons •2 tsp flour •2 inches of Ginger

•High Blood Pressure •Constipation

•Spleen •Kidneys •Pancreas •Digestive Tract

DIRECTIONS Season chicken breasts on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat 1½ teaspoons oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and sear until well browned on both sides, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer chicken to a plate and tent with foil. Reduce heat to medium. Add the remaining 1½ teaspoons oil to the pan. Add onion and garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Whisk broth, flour, 1 tablespoon dill and lemon juice in a measuring cup and add to pan. Cook, whisking, until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes. Return the chicken and any accumulated juices to the pan; reduce heat to low and simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 4 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a warmed platter. Season sauce with salt and pepper and spoon over the chicken. Garnish with the remaining 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill.

DIRECTIONS Prepare beets, carrots, apples, celery, limes (or lemons) and ginger by chopping into smaller pieces before placing into a juicer. As the skin of a beet is packed with antioxidants and nutrients, it is recommended to leave the skin on the beet. Beet skin and lemon peel (if using) have strong flavors, so you could also prepare half with skin and half peeled to adjust to the flavor, or simply peel all if preferred. Apples can be any color or variety. Do not peel the ginger, which you will add to taste as ginger can be spicy. After all ingredients are added to the juicer, blend until juiced and smooth. Drink juice as soon as possible to obtain all benefits of the antioxidants and nutrients. Miracle Red Juice can be absorbed more easily on an empty stomach. Drink one glass every other day or as needed.

GET TO THE SOURCE OF YOUR PAIN WITHOUT MEDICATION It seems like almost every news broadcast these days features a story about a disturbing cluster of drug overdoses, with theword “opioid”prominently featured. So why are these prescription drugs -- which after all, are legal if they were prescribed to the user -- so much in the news these days? And what can you do if you’re torn between not filling your own prescription, versus seeking relief for your very real pain? Why does opioid overuse matter? better emotionally as well as physically. How can physiotherapy counter the problem? It’s important to get real about the reason people seek prescription painkillers in the first place -- the pain. These patients are not to be condemned for seeking relief for injuries, arthritis and other degenerative conditions, or for post-surgical discomfort. At the same time, however, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that medications like Percocet,  Vicodin, Opana and OxyContin are extremely addictive. that opioids should not be considered first-line or routine therapy for chronic pain.” GET TO THE SOURCE OF YOUR PAIN ITHOUT MEDICATION

2. You want to do more than mask the pain. Opioids reduce the sensation of pain by interrupting pain signals to the brain. Opioids make it so you can’t feel the pain, but, they do not treat the source of your pain. Physiotherapists treat pain by finding the source and restoring movement and function. 3. Pain or function problems are related to low back pain, hip or knee osteoarthritis, or fibromyalgia. There is “high-quality evidence” supporting exercise as part of a physiotherapy treatment plan for those familiar conditions. 4. Opioids are prescribed for pain. Even in situations when opioids are prescribed, it is recommended that patients should receive “the lowest effective dosage,” and opioids “should be combined” with non-opioid therapies, such as physiotherapy. 5. Pain lasts 90 days. At this point, the pain is considered “chronic,” and the risks for continued opioid use increase. Non-opioid therapies are preferred for chronic pain and clinicians should consider opioid therapy only if expected benefits for both pain and function are anticipated to outweigh risks to the patient. Source: “Physical Therapy vs Opioids: When to Choose Physical Therapy for Pain Management.” American PhysicalTherapy Association. N.p., 15 June 2016. Web. 10 Feb. 2017.

According to a study in 2016, sales of prescription opioids have quadrupled, even though “there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain” that is reported. Both opioid prescription rates and deaths from opioid overdoses have quadrupled in the last two decades. Given these identical statistics, one can’t escape the obvious conclusion: Reliance on painkillers has gotten out of hand, and the consequences can be literally fatal. Doctors now write so many opioid prescriptions each year that it translates to one bottle per adult. Of the people who died from drug overdoses in 2015, 50 percent involved prescription painkillers. Just as ominous is the discovery that people who become addicted to prescription opioids are 40 times more likely to become addicted to heroin. Beyond extreme physical risk, over-reliance on prescription painkillers can have other detrimental effects on your health. Withdrawal symptoms can be harrowing. And while you’re still using them, opioids can lead to depression, which sets up a vicious cycle of self-medicating in order to feel

Physiotherapy, on the other hand, is so effective because it provides a multi-pronged attack to pain relief. The physiotherapists at The Physiotherapy Center, LTD provide care by manual techniques, exercise instruction, and dry needling. We even have in-home treatment options that include strengthening exercises, heat/cold therapy, manual therapy, massage therapy, ultrasound/ electrical stimulation, prescription for walking aids, laser therapy and others as needed. 5 important reasons to choose physiotherapy FIRST over opioids: 1. The risks of opioid use outweigh the rewards. Potential side effects of opioids include depression, overdose, and addiction, plus withdrawal symptoms when stopping opioid use. Because of these risks, it was “agreed
