we have here, from service clubs, to churches, to gardeners. The people of Port Stanley are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and pitch in. On behalf of a grateful community, to those who volunteer, we say a hearty Thank You! For those who have yet to take the opportunity to volunteer, I suggest you find something you are passionate about, and see if you can lend a hand. Speaking of lending a hand, as I am sure you are aware, right now people in the Ukraine are suffering from a completely unnecessary conflict. While many are sending their thoughts to the Ukraine and the people suffering there, many local people and businesses are supporting efforts to aid those in need – from the Railway City Brewing Co. selling beer, with the profits going to aid initiatives, to businesses like Doug Tarry Homes making cash donations and matching employees’ donations, to our own Port Stanley Home Hardware collecting items that are needed to be sent over to help. We ask that you consider those who have had their lives destroyed by war and help where and in whatever way you can. If you would like to donate cash directly, you can donate to www.redcross.ca/donate and select Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.
Spring has officially arrived, and it can be seen every- where. As you stroll around town, you can see the shops are displaying their latest wares; the green is peaking through the ground, and you can once again see familiar faces walking down the streets. It has been a long pandemic and a long winter so use this as your opportunity to get out there and reconnect with your
neighbours and friends – perhaps at this year’s YWCA Women’s Fashion Show and Spring Shopping Event Saturday April 23rd. Once again, we have an exciting issue for you. Port Stanley is hosting our local district Legion convention. We share the story of a local author who is sharing his hard-earned wisdom in the area of sales and management. We also share the story of how a family’s canoe escaped during the flood and through social media, found its way back home! In April, in celebration of National Volunteer Week, April 24th- 30th, we take the opportunity in this issue to salute our many passionate volunteers in the community. Read what local volunteers mean to different organizations and how important the role of volunteer is for them. The more you are around Port Stanley, the more you learn how many dedicated volunteers
Thank You Volunteers!

District Legion Convention Coming to Port Stanley If, on the weekend of April 8th-10th, you notice a few more Royal Canadian Legion crests than usual, it is because they are converging on Port Stanley for their District Convention. As Zone Commander, Art Mayo explains, this year’s convention is a few years in the making, as it had to be postponed due to the pandemic. “We usually have a convention in the spring and in the fall for the district. It’s just so we can get business done and share in some comradeship.” The Zone A7 District comprises Legions from Windsor and Sarnia to Port Burwell and goes up to London and Exeter. “It’s quite a vast region,” says Art. Events kick off Friday night with Council Dinner at the Legion, with the convention itself starting at 1:00 on Saturday and Sunday at the Port Stanley and Area Community Centre. While this year’s numbers have not been confirmed as of now, Art and his team are expecting approx. 120 delegates, a little fewer than in previous years. Art suspects some members are concerned about COVID-19 and that likely plays a role in the smaller number. However, he is excited for those who are able to make it and believes that conventions such as these are a great way for Legions from all over the area to share experiences and grow together. This convention is a voting convention so a new District Commander, Deputy-Commander and Chairperson will be elected. Art is also excited that the Ontario Command and Ladies Auxiliary will send representatives to answer any questions from those in attendance.
“I’ve been going to conventions for about 20 plus years now,” says Art. “Besides the opportunity to learn from other Legions, I enjoy the opportunity to see everybody. Often you deal with people on a regular basis through emails and whatnot, but you don’t really see faces; this way, you get to know the people you’ve been dealing with and talking to. The comradeship is a big part of it.” While the convention itself is for Legion delegates from all over the district, they are holding a service at the cenotaph on Sunday April 10th at 11am that is open to the public. “Anyone can come and observe,” says Art. “It will be similar to our Remembrance Day service. We will be recognizing veterans both past and present.” So, April 8th to 10th, if you see members of the Legion, make sure to welcome them to Port Stanley!

Drift On In After living by the coast of BC for so long, Lisa Fairweather knew one thing when it came time to move. “I told Michael that I had to be near the water; I’d like to live in Port Stanley because when we first got engaged, wecamehere tovisit his familyand that’swhen I discovered I really liked the cute town and wanted to live here.” Accordingly, two and a half years ago, they moved to their dream location, and decided to set down their new roots with a new home and a new business, so last year they opened Drift. Drift is a combination of both of their passions, combining custom-made wooden furniture and beach-themed home décor. “I build all the furniture, and do all the woodworking in here,” saysMichael. “Lisa does all the beach inspired décor, including all the ordering and the decorating.” Talk with Michael for a few minutes and you will discover he has a real passion for wood. “I’ve wanted to build furniture since I was in high school,” he says. “I don’t like building cookie cutter pieces. It just doesn’t appeal tome. I like things that are organic. I like building with different materials, anywhere from barn board to driftwood, to live edge.” The rustic furniture Michael makes can run from dining tables, end tables, cabinets, desks and benches, all hand made by him in his shop. One unique item that can be found at Drift is Michael’s ‘Lazy Michael’, which is similar to a lazy Susan, except instead of being round and meant to save space in a cabinet, it is a charcuterie board that spins. “I love getting reactions from people for something I created,” says Michael. “People say they’ve never seen anything like that: where do I come up with that idea? And I go, ‘I couldn’t tell you; it comes out of my head’.” If you like beach décor, then walking into Drift is a slice of paradise. Lisa has turned their small space into a beachcomber’s heaven. She has curated a collection of beach themed items for any space in your home. “I find I’ll be like – decorating in my head when I’m

sleeping,” says Lisa. “I try change to the window display every two weeks in the winter. In the summer, I usually do it every week. I love when people walk by to see what is in the display. People will often walk by with their dogs, so now we have little treats for them too.” Though Drift is a relatively new store, Michael and Lisa both feel welcomed by the town. “The people in Port Stanley have been great supporters,” says Lisa. “We’ve had a lot of repeat customers. We get customers who come in all the time and buy different things and we’re always trying to keep everything fresh with new stock all the time.” Next time you are out for a stroll, make sure you stop into Drift and see what new creation Michael has crafted, or what latest decoration Lisa has brought in for your home. Drift is located at 162 William St, Port Stanley.

The Little Green Canoe That Could On February 17th in the morning, I was on Main St. visiting clients, doing a little shopping, bumping into some friends and enjoying a drizzly but peaceful morning. Later in the day at home, working at my desk, I start seeing posts and videos of the horrible flood in town. Throughout the next hours and days, while I would look at the water rising and people’s many videos and photos, there was one that caught my eye -- the story of a canoe that had escaped, and its owner trying to find and return it. “I woke up to a girlfriend of mine messaging me a video of all the trailers full of water,” says Kelly Thompson, owner of the canoe. Kelly had just purchased the canoe the summer before. To her and her family, the canoe represented good family time spent together. “We had the canoe in a time of some personal struggles,” she explains. “I went out to see my canoe had made a break for it. I knew I wasn’t able to get to it where it was, so I kept trying to follow it, and my friends were trying as well. We were just waiting for it to get to a spot where it would be safe to get it, as I wasn’t risking my life for it, and I made sure my friends were doing the same.” After chasing the canoe for awhile, it reached a point where Kelly wasn’t able to keep track of it, so she and her team left it. “We just had to look at it like, if it’s meant to be, it will be,” says Kelly. “And I thought maybe if we didn’t get the canoe back, maybe it would find its way to another single mom who could benefit from it.” Kelly then began posting about the canoe and asking people to keep an eye out for it. Kelly’s Facebook posting bore fruit, as she learned that her canoe had been rescued by two gentlemen in a pickup truck.
519-631-1333 • 6804 Sunset Drive Beside the Masonic Centre and Shaw's Kelly also wanted to let me know that she will be keeping the canoe on higher ground this year so that the little green canoe doesn’t go on another daytrip! While there was some initial confusion about whether the canoe was being rescued for Kelly or being taken, Kelly was given the name and number of the gentleman who now had the canoe and she reached out. “Dan was awesome,” says Kelly. “He was so nice and great to deal with. He even delivered the canoe down to my trailer for me when I couldn’t get it on the top of my car.” Kelly wants to send out a big thank you to Dan, as well as to all those who followed her story and posted canoe sightings. “It’s always nice the way everybody can come together during tough times.”
To all the kind knitters who donated their hard work, we thank you! Your work warmed the heads, hands and hearts of those who needed to keep warm this year.
We will be collecting again next year, watch in the fall for more details!

Local Author Launches Book for Better Managers We have all worked for managers where we wonder, ‘How did they get here’. Many managers get put in that position because they are A) good at their previous role, or B) had been with the company a long time. Experience within a company and ability can help someone succeed, but it takes more than that; it takes leadership. This is something that a local Port Stanley resident, Bob Eastick knows all too well and that is why he written a book on management, sales and leadership called The Lion Share – Knowledge is Power. “It is 40 years experience tucked into one book,” says Bob. “The book is comprised of 38 chapters. Each one addresses a different aspect of sales and business management, taking into account psychology; preparation and planning; attitudes and strategy from a personal and a corporate perspective; time management; financial management and business ethics and compliance.” While there are some underlying themes says Bob, each chapter is treated like its own independent read. Bob started his working career as a radiographer in hospitals but was eventually persuaded to leave that field and to go into commercial side of healthcare. He then had many different roles with companies all over the world. While this is Bob’s first foray into completing a book, this is not his first time being published. “I have written many articles for professional periodicals and prepared countless educational programs and training courses for staff involved in advanced technologies,” he reveals. “ The Lion’s Share – Knowledge is Power is for anyone who is involved in proactive sales and business management, small or large, from the junior sales representative to the CEO,”

To that extent much of it may have universal appeal. I have had very experienced professionals who have been successful in their careers say, ‘I wish I had such a reference manual to help guide me, particularly during the early years of my career’. The objective of the book is to provide a comprehensive but compact reference manual that focuses on the key issues that have to be effectively addressed if one is to secure the optimum level of success.”

It Surely Takes a Village by Charlotte McDonald, Eat 2 Learn
We can all agree that Covid-19 has significantly impacted our lives, local businesses and organizations, hospitals and most certainly, the education system. This has not been a typical school year, nor was last year, but somehow, our schools, recognizing the important link between proper nourishment and academic performance, continue to find a way to maintain their student nutrition programs, be it a breakfast program, nutritious snack offering, lunch option, or in some cases, all three. Fortunately, many school staff, including teachers, educational assistants, and lunch supervisors as well as administration staff have taken on the necessary daily tasks, in addition to their regular school duties and for that, we are most thankful. Although school board protocols have not allowed program volunteers into schools, our many volunteers have supported these vital food programs from a distance. Some volunteers are grocery shoppers making deliveries to the schools’ front doors; others help at food hubs preparing daily snacks for delivery to schools, while another group does all of the record keeping and required budgeting. While EAT 2 LEARN supports the 30 schools across Elgin- St. Thomas running daily student nutrition programs which serve more than 8,000 students each day -- with some families choosing remote learning -- we have expanded our outreach to include monthly family food boxes which help address food insecurity concerns. With that comes another batch of volunteers who share delivery duties with school staff. Our volunteers come from across the county, young and experienced, employed and retired, all with a common interest in making a difference in our community. Many have a passion
THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS & SCHOOL STAFF for your continued dedication & commitment to student nutrition programs during this very challenging year. YOU TRULY MAKE A DIFFERENCE! When we’re back to our familiar routines in schools, we’ll be seeking new volunteers to help with food preparation, grocery shopping, and possibly still, food box deliveries, along with special events and fundraising ventures. With programs running in schools across Elgin-St. Thomas from Rodney to Port Burwell, Springfield to Port Stanley, we can often find a placement in your very own neighbourhood. I Don’t Have Time … by Simon Joynes, Port Stanley Festival Theatre Artistic Director Well, we’re all busy, aren’t we? Its almost a given. I mean, if you ask anyone how they’re doing, what are they going to say? They’re not going to say, ‘Not much happening; you know, just loafing around, can’t believe how little I do in a day’. No,
the Protestant work ethic being what it is, they’re going to say, ‘I’m busy – lot’s going on, very, very, very busy … a whirlwind!’ And apparently it’s even worse if you’re retired. All three of my siblings are retired now and they have never been busier -- just ask them. So, all in all, it’s hard to squeeze anything else into our busy, busy lives. And yet, some people do. Instead of saying, ‘I don’t have time for that’, they say, ‘Yes, yes; I could probably fit that in’, and then they volunteer. And thank heaven that they do. I’m not sure why some people do not volunteer, and others do. It’s a bit of a puzzle. Perhaps it’s in their DNA; maybe their parents volunteered, or perhaps they recognise a need and want to fill it; maybe back in the day, a particularly inspiring teacher emphasised the importance of giving back, and so now they do. Personally, I’ve never really made a point of volunteering -- after all, I’m very busy … but then, a few years ago, I got coerced into helping with a fundraising campaign to resurface our running track in Port Dover. I was coaching a few local kids, and I guess somebody thought that made me a good fit. We needed to raise a little over $300,000 with a tight time constraint. I was definitely out of my comfort zone working with a bunch of people I didn’t know, We would like to thank all our volunteer Crisis Responders and Board Members 613 Talbot Street, Unit 104 St. Thomas 519-631-3182 [email protected]
and essentially walking around with my hand out in the hopes that somebody would drop money into it. Well, not only did we raise the money, but it was incredibly satisfying… to work as a group, to inspire each other, and ultimately to achieve our goal. I occasionally detour past the track to look at that clean, new surface and when I do, it still leaves me with a warm glow of satisfaction. There are many ways to volunteer of course. Here at the theatre, we are incredibly fortunate to have a fabulous group of volunteers doing all sorts of things. Volunteers are often the first point of contact with our patrons: they serve as ushers; they fundraise, and perhaps most importantly of all, they make up our Board of Governors. We’re always looking to add to our volunteer group, but whether it’s the theatre, a service group, the Port Stanley Gardeners, youth sports, or perhaps the hospital foundation, I encourage you to think about volunteering. I know you’re busy, but at the end of the day, you won’t believe how great it will make you feel.

Impacting Children’s Lives by Carolyn Johnson, Marketing and Fund Develop- ment with Big Brothers Big Sisters St. Thomas-Elgin By volunteering to be a Mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Thomas-Elgin, one person can have a significant and profound impact on the life of a child facing adversities. “We know that nothing – nothing -- has more impact in the life of a child than positive relationships,” says Barb Matthews, Executive Director of BBBS of St. Thomas Elgin. “We recruit and train adult volunteers to build and maintain supportive relationships with children. Through committed relationships, young people are provided with a foundation to thrive. Through mentoring friendships, Mentors express care and challenge growth, igniting each Mentee’s unique potential.” The St. Thomas Elgin agency serves close to 250 kids in our community through traditional Big Brothers Big Sisters matches, in-school mentoring matches, Go Girls, Game On group mentoring programs, our new Big G 55+ program, and monthly group activities for the kids on the waiting list and matches. “Our volunteers are the reason we are able to run so many successful programs for our kids” says Barb. “Our mentors help young people discover who they are, develop and practice skills to shape their own lives, and learn how to engage with and understand the world around them.” Sarah and Nicholas were matched last summer as a ‘Big and Little’ match with BBBS of St. Thomas Elgin. Sarah is a mental health worker in London who has recently joined the BBBS Board of Directors. Sarah is a strong believer that social relationships are so important for wellbeing. The past 2 years have only amplified that and so she decided to dedicate some time to the BBBS agency. This cross-gender match has enjoyed time together going for walks, crafting, playing games, and painting their nails. Sarah says she has learned so much from Nicholas. ‘In the face of adversity he will always choose kindness. Nicholas’ patience, optimism, and generosity have truly inspired me (Sarah) to be a kinder person’. Nicholas would tell you he really enjoys the time they spend together too – the time they spend in the park chatting and especially, the visits to Shaw’s for ice cream. I hope that in this season of growth and rejuvenation, we can take the opportunity to plant new seeds in our community to cultivate a culture we can celebrate and enjoy!!! For the second year in a row, I am participating in the Southwestern Ontario Tourism Boards’ Experiential Tourism training. As a Travel Agent and responsible traveller, it is fascinating to explore the possibilities of what this approach means to the community. Port Stanley is rich in traditions, postcard-worthy settings, storytellers and attractions that set us apart from other local regions. How can we showcase collaboratively the precious art, nature, culture, cuisine and wellness experiences unique to us? I would like to celebrate our local businesses who have shown great resilience adapting to the ongoing changes in COVID restrictions and related challenges. Many are struggling to survive, and I know our supportive community is aware that buying local is instrumental to their continued success. One of Port’s fundamental attributes has always been the sheer tenacity of a close-knit community, and I am so inspired to see this continue with our growth and development. Tourism in Port Stanley has always been a key component of our economic survival. Today there is a growing selection of Port Stanley Villager Geoffrey Rae Managing Editor /Sales [email protected] 519-495-7177 Copy Editor – Peter Bloch-Hansen Publisher – Barb Botten [email protected] Graphic Artist – Cathy Wood Please email [email protected]. ences and have things to do. Many travellers will be looking locally for their getaways and in doing so, are leaving a lighter carbon footprint. They are looking for ways to connect with the local culture and have new adventures in a safe environment. We know that experiences attract visitors and newcomers alike to our village; they will be inclined to stay longer and visit during different seasons when they make a more personal connection with our local culture. Giving visitors a glimpse into our world creates a transformation in them and cultivates a stronger connection and insight. We know that in doing so, travellers will become advocates for the local places and people they have connected with in their destination. I am looking forward to collaborating with even more local businesses during our upcoming high season!!! I hope the CALIPSO Festival, (July 29th-August 1st), will also provide an opportunity to showcase our beautiful villages’ unique assets!!! Spring is a season of new beginnings. Cheers to ours!!!

Port Matters by Frances Kennedy
Diversity and inclusion in the workplace have become more important than ever given the
increasingnumberof immigrantsmakingtheirhomeinCanadainrecent years. What’s that got to do with what matters in Port? Central Elgin is undergoing a demographic shift that requires visionary leadership to steward its best future. Our diversity is an asset; newcomers are not an intrusion, and by their inclusion we will fare far better. Two decades ago, I emigrated from London to Port; it was a short distance and a long journey. I volunteered for Elgin Communities in Bloom and Junior Achievement; delivered for young Jamie McClenaghan’s launch of pizza at the famed (and fondly remembered) Green Roof Restaurant, and subsequently I ran for Ward One. I knocked on doors for six weeks and asked two questions at every door that opened: What brought you to Port, and why do you stay? Dave Marr (thankfully) became Councillor. The late Francie Dennison, and Fran Kennedy split the vote by virtue of similar first names (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it). I fell in love with Port Stanley and Elgin County… its past, its present, and its possibilities. Previously, workingwith real estate developerswhowere assembling land in the 90s for redevelopment, “placemaking” was a becoming a thing. Where would the Boomer generation’s “bulge” retire circa 2020? All to say that is now, they are us, and we are there. We have beensaved fromanentirely retiredcommunitydue toapandemic that has untethered young urban dwellers from office towers to smaller communities including Central Elgin, St. Thomas and Port Stanley, with whomwe share common ground with history and possibility. It is incumbent upon all of us to embrace progressive change. This is a clarion call in a municipal election year. Serving in public office is a thankless task, particularly for an embattled and embittered constituency. How do we ensure commitment to the greater good of our communities who have both common and unique concerns? What about a legacy of serving the greater good at a time when decisions made by Council will shape our future form and function? What if we contribute to a vision that shapes our form and function as a quaint fishing village and a thriving ever evolving community? What if we elect a Council that is transparent and accountable in its processes, and creates solutions that contain costs that concern its constituents?
There are those among us who may turn a blind eye or roll their eyes at a call-to-arms for a future far beyond their own. But what about our children and their children’s children? We’re not done yet. What if we lived up to “Progressive by Nature”? This is our moment for making legacy in our local communities. Now is a storied pause in human history that will be told and re-told. Now let’s build our future drawing from our past. When we practice our best future, we create it.
