Port Stanley Villager June 2022 • Issue 40

Letter from the Editor I love June -- the weather is generally sunny and warm but not yet too hot. June is also a time to celebrate our graduates of all levels of education as they steady themselves to take a brave step forward into their new reality. This month, we also celebrate all the amazing fathers there are out there. Yes sir, I love June; if only it had football on, it would be the perfect month!

sold out so quickly they had to add a second seating, which also sold out quickly! If all that wasn’t enough, the kick off to the Port Stanley Festival Theatre season comes in June. Speaking of exciting times, once again in this issue, we are sharing stories of two new local businesses which happen to be right next to each other. Read about a new salon in town, the Crown & Glory Hair Salon, which is right next to the new Harbour Cheesecake: celebrate a new hairdo with a sweet treat! With the changing of the season comes the changing of fashions. With that in mind, you will find in our pages this month, the suggestions which the ladies at Lady Savannah Fashion Boutique offer for the must-haves for this summer! We also have a local skin care expert offering tips on how to treat your skin right under those hot summer rays! One more event to add to your calendar, Saturday June 4th there will be a special BBQ fundraiser to help raise money for a family of four moving to Port Stanley from the Ukraine. The BBQ will feature live music, silent auctions on some local art and more. It will be held at 547 West Edith Cavell Blvd. from Noon – 4pm. Any donations you would like to make are welcome, and appreciated. I once again remind you that Election Day is Thursday, June 2nd. I urge you to take an opportunity to go out and cast your vote. This is your opportunity to help shape your province into what you believe it should be. It doesn’t matter if your candidate wins or loses; your vote matters and I hope you will join me in exercising our right to have our voices heard. Geoff

There are so many exciting things going on in our community and the surrounding areas during June. The St. Thomas Home Show will be on at the Joe, June 3rd – 5th; the Port Stanley Art Guild will host their annual Art Show & Sale at the Legion, June 10th – 12th; look to pages 8 and 9 of this issue for some samples of some of the amazing talent on display. Of course, Father’s Day is June 19th. While you are showing Dad how much you care, make sure to also show some local love by shopping local for him. On the weekend of June 25th and 26th, Air Fest takes off at the St. Thomas Airport, and the Port Stanley Lions host their first-time Lobsterfest at the Legion. Based on the response, I would say this event will become an annual tradition: tickets

Above: All 12 Grade 5 contestants of the spelling bee with their certifcates. Below: Ainsley Granger, the champion with her mom Lindsay.

Doing Their Own Sting: The Port Stanley Optimists Spelling Bee On May 7th, a dozen local Grade 5 students gathered in the Port Stanley United Church for one of the oldest academic traditions, a spelling bee. This year marked the 4th time the Port Stanley Optimist Club had hosted a spelling bee, and the first one since the pandemic. Invitations were sent out to 11 area schools and the first 12 brave and eager Grade 5 students who signed up made up the field. I will be honest; the idea of competing in a spelling bee still sends shivers up my spine and I am over 30 years removed from Grade 5. I truly admired the gumption of these 12 students who each stood up and spelled out words from transportation to chiffon (yeap, I got that one wrong myself). Each of the contestants was given their own words to spell; if they received three strikes they were out. Through a dozen or so rounds, 10 gifted spellers were struck out one by one, leaving just two. After a few more rounds, Grade 5 student, Ainsley Granger of Forest Park Public School emerged this year’s spelling bee champ! After the awards were handed out, and some group photos of the contestants taken, I got a chance to speak with Ainsley about her win. “I was really nervous; I kept my hands under my legs to keep them from shaking,” she said. “At first, I didn’t realize I had won and when I did, I was really excited!” Each of the contestants received a small cash prize and a certificate of participation, with 3rd, 2nd and 1st place A brand new play by Canada’s king of comedy, Norm Foster. A story about change, love and new beginnings. My Hero WORLD PREMIERE

winners each receiving pro- gressively larger prizes, all provided by the Port Stanley Optimist Club.

“The primary focus of Optimist Clubs (“Friend of Youth”) is on helping young people in any way possible,” says Paula Mizi- olek of the Optimist Club, and event Host. “The Grade 5 students-only rule provides new contestants each year for additional educational learning, build- ing self confidence in pub- lic speaking (away from a school atmosphere) and meeting students from other schools. It is also a fun event as no one is put down and all are applauded as a group.” So, if your student is heading into Grade 5 next year, make sure to keep an eye out for their invitation to the 2023 spelling bee. They could have their chance to get up and spell out champion – C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N, champion.

My Hero by Simon Joynes, Port Stanley Festival Theatre Artistic Director Well, the word “hero” gets tossed around a lot, doesn’t it? Once upon a time, I think the meaning was clearer, but like a lot of words, over

the course of time, ‘hero’s’ meaning been somewhat co-opted. We talk about athletes being heroes, but I’m not sure that that’s appropriate, really. I mean, sure they perform extraordinary feats, but many of them do it not exactly selflessly but for a healthy pay cheque. I’ve always felt that there should be an element of sacrifice involved for someone truly to be a hero. When I was a kid, if I thought about it all, I guess I would have said that my grandfather was my hero. He came over to Canada at the turn of the century in his early 20’s at a time when horse and buggy was viable prairie transportation and fur coats were normal winter wear, and after all sorts of adventures, returned to England because he promised his mother he would. That all seemed pretty heroic to me. Then, to top it off, even though he was old enough that he didn’t have to, he joined up with the veterinary corps during the First World War, serving as an air raid warden during the battle of Britain in World War two. He lived to be 93 years old. In Norm Foster’s play, My Hero, the lead character, Jim, talks about who his hero was growing up. Jim’s dad had been a famous hockey player who had died in a car accident while in his prime. He was a man’s man, a hard hitting, high scoring athlete,

“one of the best to play the game”.The memory of Jim’s father in many ways underpins the story, and Foster leads us to expect that Jim’s hero is his father. It is only after he leads us through the events of the play, the ins and the outs, the laughter, and the pathos, that we come to understand that Jim’s hero is in fact his mother -- a woman who fought hard, sacrificed everything, raised Jim on her own, and ultimately always had his back.

I guess being a hero is not gender specific. I guess heroes come in all shapes and sizes. I think that’s a good thing to keep in mind.

The Spring Real Estate Market has really taken off at the beginning of May in Port Stanley. Over the winter months there was little supply in our local market place, with only a handful of listings at any one time. By mid May this number had risen

to over 35 Houses for sale. More real estate signs can be seen around town as the supply increases. My Open Houses have been busy, with many people driving up to 3 hours or more to come view these homes. Some have never been to Port Stanley before. I often take these folks for a tour of the town. They fall in love and want to buy here. Check out the properties I currently have for sale. Call me before you list or buy. I live here, I sell here, I know the market. Summer Must Haves by Melissa & Connie Van Ymeren, Owners of Lady Savannah Fashion Boutique It's spring, 2022 and fashion is finally getting back to normal. It's so refreshing seeing outfits that can be worn off the couch! Now that we are heading in the right

direction with regular shopping with weddings and events happening again, it's time to revamp your wardrobe with fresh spring/summer outfits! With that said, let's talk about what the current trends are and what is here to stay! You may have noticed some current styles that you have seen before, perhaps 25+ years, or even 50 years ago? We all know fashion revolves and in the 90's, there was a strong influence of the 70s and its all making another round! Remember when your parents or grandparents had macrame plant holders that hung from the ceiling? Home decor and fashion always beat to a similar drum, which means macrame/crochet are a hot trend in both worlds. From crocheted handbags to cute cro- cheted tops, it's a lovely style that everyone can wear! I'm sure most of you wore either bell bottoms, flair/boot cut or wide leg pants right? Well, these pant styles are all back and with the proper pant length, they can be a figure flattering fit. But, you can't get away with not pairing those cute pants with a great platform or

wedge shoe! Not only do they look great on, but can elevate an outfit while still keeping your tootsies comfy. It's a win-win! Now, just because the wider pant is a current trend, that does not mean the skinny pant/jeans are out. They are a classic

for a cute and cool (literally) summer outfit. Not only is linen a classic, but a hot trend right now as well! Let's talk about colour and pattern trends! We are seeing soft pinks, corals, yellows, blues and lots of neutral tones such as cream and off-white, mixed with beautiful sand and butterscotch tones. Khaki, army green and sage green are also huge colours for the current season. Floral patterns are hot, but more of a smaller print and also stripes or modified stripes with lots of natural fabrics such as linen and cotton. Speaking of colour trends, the hot colour for late summer/fall, 2022 will be chocolate brown mixed with deep pink, blue and deep sage. 70's style patterns like chevrons will be making a comeback as well! From beautiful, flowing, feminine dresses to high-rise, wide-leg pants, it's all a dramatic change from the days of matching sweat shirts and pants and everything lounge wear. 2022 is alive and looking vibrant and lovely all over again. If you're lucky enough to fit into your ‘blast from the past’ clothing or need a trendy new wardrobe, you'll be set this season with beautiful colours, prints and feminine styles!

silhouette that will never go out of style. However, they are just not the number one current trend. So ladies, keep your skinny jeans and keep wearing them! Trends will come and go, but classics are here to stay. Another classic is anything linen! For the fashion world, linen pants and tops are always a staple

Port Stanley Artists Guild Annual Art Show & Sale We are lucky here in Port Stanley that we are surrounded by so many talented artists. It is truly one of the amazing gifts that help make Port Stanley the gem that it is. On June 10th through June 12th, local artists will be converging and covering the walls of the Port Stanley Legion hall, as the Port Stanley Artists Guild (PSAG) hosts their annual Art Show & Sale. The sale was forced to take a two-year hiatus during the pandemic response, but our local Guild members are excited to show their work to casual viewers and potential buyers alike. “The PSAG is a group of artists from Port Stanley and surrounding communities,” says Marcia Pensa, President of the PSAG. “It’s been a very active group for over 30 years now, meeting once a month. They allow only 62 members at one time and generally have a waiting list of potential new members.” With the pandemic, their membership has fallen below their hard cap, so if you are interested in joining, you are encouraged to reach out. They have workshops or guest speakers at their meetings, or members of the guild will demonstrate different techniques to their fellows. “It’s a very social group as well, says Marcia. “We usually have a coffee break with some goodies; though we haven’t done that since the pandemic, but we started live meetings again this past September.” June is a busy month for the guild, as they not only have their very popular Art Show & Sale, but June also marks the last meeting for the season, with the next meeting not until September. the planning committee decided caution was best and decided to forgo the reception. The show will run from 11am to 8pm on Saturday and from noon to 5pm on Sunday, with free admission all weekend. The submissions to the show will be judged Friday, before the show opens to the public. This year’s judge, Laura Woermke, will choose her 10 favourites and 10 honourable mentions. “Usually, the honourable mention is recognized because it’s unique in some way,” says Marcia. “If you get a ribbon, it means your work was noticed.” You too can get in on the judging; each visitor to the show will be given a ballot to submit for their favourite piece. At the end of each day, the ballots will be counted, and that piece will be recognized as the patrons’ choice. As it is an Art Show & Sale, if you see a piece you must have, you can purchase it. As well, the PSAG will be having an art draw; you can buy a raffle ticket and place it in the raffle container for one of the four pieces to be won. “The goal of the show is for artists who are working away on their art at home to have a place to display their work, and to help people get eyes on their art. Selling the art is just such a wonderful bonus,” says Marcia. “It’s fun, and it gets people excited.” Make sure to circle your calendar for June 10th-12th and stop in to the Port Stanley Legion so you can take in the Port Stanley Artist Guilds Art Show & Sale.

Let Them Eat Cheesecake! Perhaps with the addition of that one little word, Marie Antoinette might have been spared her grisly fate! For many, after a hard day’s work, cheesecake is a decedent treat and Christy Gee is inviting you to treat yourself at her new store, Harbour Cheesecake. Christy, a lifelong resident of the area, knew that one day, if she opened her own business, she wanted to open it in Port Stanley! “It’s not something I really planned on,” she says. A talented cake decorator, Christy decided she wanted to see her clients enjoy her product. “I’ve always dabbled in cake decorating -- kind of the creative side, art as far as that goes; done a few wedding cakes, had a lot of fun with that. But it just wasn’t all that much fun for me because I don’t get to see the enjoyment from people unless I’m invited.” So while she enjoyed the craft of it, she knew it was time for a change. “We were eating cheesecake one day and my husband said, ‘You know what? This would be fantastic in Port Stanley. So now, here I am.”

At Harbour Cheesecake, it’s a New York style cheesecake, sold by the slice and garnished in a variety of different ways. “Starting out, we want to keep the menu small. I have nine options on the menu, and each is themed towards the Port Stanley waterfront. Plus, I want to have specials that pop up every once in a while. There will also be specials for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter, Christmas, etc. and maybe, just to have that little bit of a change occasionally -- something that just kind of pops up out of the blue just because it’s nice outside. We want to offer a different take on cheesecake.” If you are looking to reward yourself with a little slice of heaven, stop into Harbour Cheesecake and see how Christy and her team make each slice special just for you! Christy serves the first slice to Owen Gallerno, who has been patiently waiting for weeks!

...

• Spring is here, and we are happy to safely connect, gather, and learn as communities once again. We have been here with you throughout the pandemic and recognize that it has been difficult on everyone and every club, group and church.

Harbour Cheesecake is located at 204 Main Street, Port Stanley.

I nvite us to join you at one of your meetings to give a short presentation on preplanning, cremation and how funerals have changed, and we will donate s10 to your organization for every person who attends.

Replacing Richmond Street for Lovely Port Stanley

One of the most amazing things about Port Stanley is that no matter where you are, chances are you have a great view of the water, or of nature, or of the unique architecture there is all over town. For Joan Faubert, the pace of life and the change of view was a deciding factor when, back in April, she decided to move her Crown & Glory Hair Salon from London to Port Stanley. “Replacing the view of busy Richmond Street in London for the lovely Port Stanley view made the decision to relocate simple,” says Joan, who added that reducing her commuting time from 45 to 12 minutes was also a huge perk! While the Crown & Glory Hair Salon is new to Port Stanley, Joan operated it for seven years in its previous London location. Since the Crown & Glory Hair Salon is right on the water, Joan and her customers get to experience a beautiful view while enjoying a relaxed atmosphere: says Joan, “l love the feel of village life, seeing locals and visitors walking by and enjoying the quintessential aspects of Port Stanley. It’s just such a wonderful environment to work in.” “I have always been interested in the hair industry since my early teens,” says Joan, who has been in the industry for over 30 years. l love the creative outlet it provides and the industry is ever-changing, so it never gets dull. It’s fun to work with people and create at the same time. Hair is so important to oneself, so if l can help people reach their hair goals it is very rewarding.” “I received my formal training in England, where l met my husband, Paul from St. Thomas and from there my journey

began. As my husband works as a software developer, travel was part of his job and so we embarked upon this journey together. So far l have worked as a professional stylist in England, Germany, USA (Arizona & Utah), and now for the past 18 years, in Ontario.” For Joan, the most import part of her job is giving the customer what they want and using the best products for the customer. “Crown & Glory is a full service hair salon for the whole family that has a relaxed vibe so my clients will never feel rushed. I listen intently to what the customer wants, striving to achieve a high level of client satisfaction. I utilize only the highest quality hair products that are both eco-friendly and safe on the hair and scalp. I chose a hair colour line containing organic monoi from Tahiti; it’s vegan, and free of ammonia, sulphate and ppd. The product brand l use is Kaaral Maraes; however, if a client has a brand they have a preference for, l will accommodate.” If you are looking to change your style or your stylist, make sure to set up an appointment with Joan at the Crown & Glory Hair Salon, located at 204 Main St., Unit #2, Port Stanley.

Helping Your Skin this Summer by Denise Lauzon, owner of Metamorphosis Skin Summer is my favourite time of year. After a long winter of bundling up and wearing face masks, I just want to let my skin breathe. My plan is to lie on the beach and feel the sun on my face. I would like to have a golden tan, just without the skin damage; is that possible? The sun isn’t all bad: we get Vitamin D from the sun; we just need to have sensible sun exposure guidelines in place; for example, if you know you’re spending the day on the boat or outdoors, prepare beforehand. Apply a dermatologist-approved sun screen 30 minutes before you leave the house; even if it’s cloudy, UV rays can still cause sun damage; you may not feel the heat but your skin will burn, especially on the water. Selecting the right sunscreen may feel like you need a chemistry degree but it is relatively simple. There are two types of sunscreen -- chemical and physical; they function by blocking and screening out harmful rays. Physical sunblocks are zinc and titanium oxide, naturally occurring minerals considered broad spectrum. When applied to the skin this type of sunscreen protects the skin by creating a physical barrier and blocking the suns rays. Chemical sunscreens allow UV rays to hit the skin, transforming it into non- damaging wavelengths of light or heat. Choose one that suits you best and make sure you reapply throughout the day, especially after you swim. If you are an outdoor enthusiast and like to hike through the wooded trails, prepare a small backpack with a couple bottles of water to maintain hydration, wear a sun hat and apply a natural bug repellent. If you get a bite make sure it’s not a tick and apply a simple calamine lotion or antibacterial tea tree balm to soothe the itch and keep it from infection. The hot and humid weather makes us sweat. Sweat combines with the bacteria and oils on our skin, resulting in breakouts and sweat NAME THIS PLANE

• This is a family friendly community event that has an opportunity for participation from the entire village. • For our local businesses who have faced such economic challenges over the past few years the festival attracts more visitors to increase tourism industry revenues through destination marketing • It encourages us to go out and explore this place we call home and retains the local spending of residents • It’s a great time to invite out of town friends and relatives and encourages visitors from outside of Elgin County to visit the area • It will enhance the quality of sum- mer vacation offering within Elgin

After having to cancel the C.A.L.I.P.S.O Festival for two summers in a row, I know we are all looking forward to celebrating this year. A special thanks to all who participated in our FUN-Raising Dance at the Port Stanley Legion on May 6. It was a huge success and sold out. If this event is any indication, then, we are going to have an amazing festival with a heart- warming display of community spirit. C.A.L.I.P.S.O. is an acronym for “Come And Live In Port Stanley Ontario”, designed to attract people who appreciate our unique attributes. This celebration offers a variety of activities, events & special offerings throughout the village during the Civic Holiday weekend July 29th through August 1 this year. Local businesses participate by decorating with a C.A.L.I.P.S.O. theme,

Why are we so passionate about keeping a summer festival alive in our village? • It caters to a market of consumers who are seeking authentic, unique experiences in shopping, culinary, beaches, sightseeing, small Canadian towns and villages. • It highlights our “distinctive local characteristics including local cultural, heritage, and historical traditions to create appealing and unique opportunities to attract potential newcomers to “live, work, and play” in the village

Port Matters by Frances Kennedy [email protected]

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign/blocking up the scenery/breaking my mind/do this, don’t do that/can’t you read the signs? Is there a public place left in Port that doesn’t assault us with signs to tell us what we can and can’t do? How did we become a fishing village with nowhere to fish? I send my guests to Port Burwell to cast a line (and their signs are as instructive and far less obtrusive.) Do we need a sign to direct traffic not to pass on Bridge Street at Carlow Road? Really? There are two solid yellow lines on the road! At the same location… are two signs required to direct visitors to 401, St. Thomas and London? Do we really need to harm the charm of a quaint village community with superfluous signage? Little Beach has several towering signs from either approach that obliterate the natural wonders of lakefront, five of which are meant to deter dogs. They’re not in different languages; so why the repetition? And it’s not working. I dare say signs are a greater blight to our public places than dog-do; we are (for the most part) a community of conscientious dog owners. Let’s scoop the poop and fight the blight of unsightly signs! We’re inundated with COVID protocols everywhere! Are towering signs on our beaches to be the new normal? Can we relocate and reduce the size to see the splendour of sunrise? Common ground is prime real estate, and whether old-timers, long timers, or newcomers… we share it. What I know for sure is that most residents of Port Stanley and environs are here because we believe it’s the best place to be. The plethora of photos posted on social media is a daily testament to why “we’re all here ‘cuz we’re not all there” be it London, Oakville, Kitchener, Hamilton, TO or Mississauga (swathed by surrounding suburbia and by design, requires vehicles.) Port can’t accommodate that design and by virtue of our current development the core will be as congested as New York City with paid parking, two-hour limits and no provision for residents living in the core, Colonel Bostwick, Hetty, Colborne, Main, and William, as examples. As for filling the municipal coffers: is the only free parking left behind the CE administration building? What about a Municipality that walks its talk and pays to park? With respect to waterfront planning… read up on the ECO students at Kettle Creek Public School! Let’s endorse the PSVA’s response to the Thinc survey; it’s well considered, well presented consensus-based Dan Salhani Broker CENTURY 21 First Canadian Corp., Dan Salhani Inc.; Brokerage*

thinking. On behalf of the community, thank you for your time, energy, and commitment to synergy. Yesterday, I watched three V formations of geese converge as two and veer off in different directions; let’s consider the benefits of honking! What’s the cost of bylaw officers to enforce paid parking relative to the revenue? There are communities like ours addressing similar growth issues with fair-to-citizens solutions. Why won’t CE Council consider similar alternatives that work… and act on behalf of its citizens? This is a municipal election year; an informed vote shapes the best possibilities for defining the character, function, and vitality of Port Stanley and CE. Who we determine as next term’s Council casts a long shadow going forward; let’s vote accordingly. When we practice our best future, we create it.
