Andrew Vincent 1898–1993, Oregon Andrew Vincent studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1923 to 1928. He taught painting and drawing at the University of Oregon, becoming head of the Art Department in 1931, retiring in 1968. Vincent hired artists David McCosh and Lance Wood Hart to teach in Eugene, and produced several murals for the WPA during the Great Depression years. His teaching methods remain very influential amongst the landscape painters of Eugene and the Willamette Valley. Deeply influenced by Paul Cezanne, Vincent initially worked in a brushy, Post-Impressionist style, focusing primarily on the landscape. He would develop a more modernist approach to painting, based on bold, monumental forms often sculpted with a palette knife, and distinctive, warm color, while maintaining a poetic feeling for nature and the landscape.
