THE MOST INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN MY LIFE AND HOW THEY GOT ME WHERE I AM TODAY
Sometimes the most influential people in your life are the ones you seek out for guidance, and other times, they may appear when you least expect them. When I think of the people who’ve had the greatest impact on my life, I would say it’s probably a 50-50 mix between those two situations. Certain people have guided me and also provided wisdom that’s applicable both inside and outside of the PT clinic. As I’m sure is the case with many of you, one of the most influential people in my life was my dad. He taught me a lot of practical skills and life lessons. As a career electrician for 30 years, he was the kind of guy who was good with his hands. I learned about electrical work, sure, but I also learned a lot about basic home care, construction, auto maintenance, woodworking, and much more from him. My dad was never one to say, “You can’t do this.” Instead, he was more inclined to say, “Let’s figure out how we can fix this together.” Through everything my dad taught me, he drove home the value and necessity of hard work. Regardless of what career you find yourself in, understanding that value will always serve you well. When it comes to how I became a physical therapist, one of the most influential people in my life is Phil, my boss from when I worked as a tech before going to PT school. More than anyone else at any PT clinic, Phil was the one who opened my eyes to the available opportunities in that field.
years that I worked for him. When I floundered at the prospect of applying to PT school, he encouraged me, saying I was ready for the challenge and even wrote me a recommendation that I’m sure had a lot to do with my acceptance. Throughout my life and career, I’ve found role models in places that I decided weren’t the right fit for me. For example, right out of PT school, I thought I found my dream job at a clinic, but like many jobs people take immediately after graduating, I realized it wasn’t the dream job I thought it was. However, while I was there, a coworker of mine became a great mentor. He showed me the ropes of being a PT, and it helped me prepare for being a PT at my own clinic today. Without his help, I don’t know that I would have felt nearly as prepared to open what is now Proof PT. Whether you’re currently working at your dream job, you’re looking for a job, or you’re working somewhere that merely pays the bills, be on the lookout for the people who can help you get where you want to go. You can find them anywhere that you are, so long as you’re willing to look around and listen. -Dr. Jordan Williams

As people grow older, they’re more likely to find themselves at home with less company. If your family members live far away or you have physical limitations that make it difficult to leave the house, you may be at an increased risk of experiencing loneliness. This is why adopting an animal can be so helpful. Pets offer comfort and love, and many encourage physical activity. Integrating a pet into your life as you grow older can be just what you need to lift your spirit and keep you healthy. The Benefits of Pet Ownership A lack of purpose can take a significant toll, but the sense of duty pet owners have around caring for their animals helps them avoid this. The daily tasks of feeding, playing with, and walking your animal can help provide structure and bring meaning to your life. They also give you something to look forward to each day. What’s better than waking up or coming home to a wagging tail or loud meow? This is how pets help improve their owners’ mental and physical health. Studies also show that those who care for pets have less stress and lower blood pressure and cholesterol than their petless counterparts. You’re also more likely to maintain a daily exercise routine. Humans have an innate need to be social, and without someone to talk to regularly, our mental well-being can start to deteriorate. Pets may not be the best conversation partners, but they may increase your social activity. Walking a dog to a local park every day, for example, can provide an opportunity for you to interact with other people. If you live alone, this simple activity can increase your social circle and improve your mental health. Find the Right Pet Before taking advantage of the many benefits pets offer, it’s crucial to consider which pet is right for you. Doing research can help answer important questions about which animals might be a good fit for you and your lifestyle and which aren’t. Finding a perfect match may take some time, but once that connection is made, there is nothing that will bring more joy into both of your lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a list of questions that will help guide you to the perfect pet. Take a look at CDC.gov/healthypets .
