HOPE Hope has a whole new weight to it these days. Back in 2008, when “Hope” was on so many campaign posters, I felt hope, and a lot of it. Then, in 2016, a bit of despair. Well, a lot of despair. But here we are in 2021, and hope has its own presence, its own living, breathing heft. The arrival of a vaccine signals a coming change. Certainly maybe not a fast change, but we see we’ve at least hit the second half of the ultramarathon. As hard as that is, it’s easier on the psyche to be on the backside. Certainly, I feel hopeful that some solid COVID leadership will carve a path to enable keeping all of us on the same team, the healthy team, and that hope lifts me up. I remind myself on a daily basis to stay present. That presence enables me to endure, and I like to think of fortitude and endurance as my special life skills. That presence enables me to stay calm (mostly) while my hormonal almost-tween bursts forth in front of me. That presence enables me to take sharp turns that get thrown in all of these COVID times at the clinic with nary but a sigh. That presence enables me to accept, and BE. Living in “I wish” or “I hope …” in my head can sometimes end up crushing my spirit when the wished for actions don’t materialize. I prefer to be an optimistic realist and stay grounded and present.
