THE PT PROFESSION ALLOWS ME TO GET ALL THE SCOOPS!

meals I’ve had or movies I’ve watched have been thanks to my patients. I’ve learned about the best schools, all the great books to read as a new mother, and so many things I wouldn’t have known if it weren’t for you. I’m very grateful. I’ve seen this happen with our staff, too — our team members have been inspired to climb mountains, try yoga for the first time, and start new sports or hobbies because of their patients. When a patient is trying to get back to a sport, I want to know what it’s like firsthand, so over the years, my patients have inspired me to go to hockey rinks, play more basketball, and watch martial arts. It’s energizing to learn something new, and thanks to my patients, I constantly get to do that. Our patients are here to learn from and be healed by us, but I learn so much from them in the process. We get to share in some of their challenges as they overcome injuries and get stronger. It’s such an honor to meet with our clients a couple times a week and watch them heal as well as learn about them as people. That’s what makes this job so awesome. I hope you know how much you enrich our lives or, at least after reading this, that you have a better sense of how grateful we are for you. 425-497-8180 | WWW.PTPRO.BIZ 1 -Maureen Madden

for an hour, I learn about each patient and their life. I learn about their family, what they love to do, and what they are passionate about. I get to have a connection with them that I think is pretty unique to our profession. Sometimes, longtime patients come back, we get to talking, and they ask how old my kids are. It’s a trip to realize I was pregnant when I first saw them! I get to hear about their kids, too, and how their dog is doing. These connections make me appreciate how special each person is and the different elements we bring to the table. I found out about the school I ended up sending my daughters to through a patient. I found out about so many great books on parenting from my patients. It’s like the PTPro village helped me raise my kids! We consider ourselves doubly lucky at our location because we get to work with people from all over the world. In an eight-hour day, I might see people from six different countries. It’s incredible. In spending an hour together three or so times a week, I get to learn about so many different things I maybe never would have known about otherwise. It’s one of the best parts of my job. If you’ve ever given me a recommendation for a restaurant, movie, book, or anything else, let me tell you how much I appreciate it! I take them to heart, and some of the best

When I was in PT school learning all about the profession I would be practicing, I couldn’t wait for the day when I would start helping patients. I saw that as my calling. I imagined helping an athlete get back on to the field. I imagined a weekend warrior getting back to the trails or a parent being able to pick up their child again.

What I couldn’t have guessed then was all the ways my patients would enrich my life.

One of the best parts about being a physical therapist is that I get to connect with amazing people all day. I help people who are working hard to get back to the active life they love, but it’s so much more than that. In working together

WHAT DO JULIUS CAESAR AND BUFFALO WINGS HAVE IN COMMON?

Fun Facts About the Month of July M ost Americans associate July with Independence Day and everything the holiday

and red and white attire, much like how Americans celebrate the Fourth of July.

Quintilis was renamed July in his honor. Of course, Caesar’s legacy didn’t end there. Before he died, he implemented the Julian calendar, which he based off of the Egyptian solar calendar, and it remained in place for over 1,500 years until the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the 16th century. RED, WHITE, AND WHO? Similar to the Declaration of Independence for the U.S., Canada’s Constitution Act of 1867, signed on July 1 of that year, marks the birth of Canada. The following year, Charles Monck, the 4th Viscount Monck and Canada’s first governor-general, signed a proclamation requesting that everyone in Canada celebrate their country’s independence on July 1. However, it wasn’t until 100 years later that the date officially became Canada Day. Most celebrations include fireworks

GOT WINGS? While chicken wings are a staple of Southern dining, they actually originated in upstate New York. In 1964, Teressa Bellissimo, co-owner of the Anchor Bar, started cooking leftover wings dipped in hot sauce for her son and his friends. After receiving enthusiastic feedback, Bellissimo put them on the menu. Over the next few years, the recipe’s popularity spread, and in 1977, former Buffalo mayor Stan Makowski declared July 29 to be National Chicken Wing Day. The reputation of the famous Buffalo wings continued to spread nationwide, and in the early ‘90s, wings became an international hit when McDonald’s, KFC, and Domino’s Pizza began selling them in the variety of flavors we know and love today.

entails, including traditional barbecue cuisine, fireworks, and summer vacations. However, in addition to the Fourth of July, this midsummer month has a rich history and offers fun opportunities for everyone to celebrate.

‘WHAT’S IN A NAME?’ You’ve likely heard of Julius Caesar,

the famous Roman dictator and general known for changing the Roman Empire’s political structure, innovating war tactics, and eventually dying after a legendary assassination. But did you know that July, Caesar’s birth month, wasn’t always called that? It was initially named Quintilis , which means “fifth” in Latin, because it was the fifth month of the ancient Roman calendar. Shortly after Caesar’s death, the month of

EXERCISE OF THE MONTH

“Heel Raise ”

Why: Strong calves are important for many reasons, including helping with stair climbing, hiking, cycling, and running. You may not notice how much they help, but when calf muscles get weak or tight, it can lead to injuries like Achilles tendonitis, knee pain, plantar fasciitis, and even contribute to back pain! How: Heel raises are best done one leg at a time to maximize benefit and be able to tell if one side is weaker or tighter. Stand near a counter top in case you lose balance. Keep your knee locked straight and raise your heel off the floor as high as you can, then SLOWLY lower. Repeat 10–15 times and do three sets. Goal: 40–50 in a row without a break! Follow this with a good calf stretch.

If you’ve worked with Megumi, you are a lucky person. It often feels like there is no problem she can’t solve. She is an accomplished physical therapist and teacher as well as a compassionate, empathetic person. When Megumi was 19, she needed to have brain surgery. The experience changed her perspective in life. She knew she wanted to do something that would involve working with and helping people. Six months later, her path became clear. She had moved to the United States from her native Japan and was taking language classes when she learned about physical therapy from her roommate, who was receiving it. Megumi was immediately interested and, after looking up more information, decided PT was the path for her. You might notice how many letters Megumi has after her name and the whopping number of continuing education classes she’s taken (as well as taught). As a nonnative English speaker, Megumi saw pursuing her education and continuing to learn as a way to prove herself. “To make sure I’m providing really good care to people, I tried to pursue a lot of training,” she says. “I love learning about different ways of approaching the body. If I can’t change something now, hopefully I am better able to next time.” For Megumi, seeing patients improve is the best part of her job. “I like problem-solving,” she says. But her work goes beyond just fixing something. “If I help my patient without giving them the tools to be independent, then they might have the same problem a few years later. I like giving patients tools so they can fix the whole problem, so they’re not depending on my care to get better.” When it comes to treating patients, Megumi approaches each person and situation as unique. “Several people may experience back pain, but it’s not the same for everyone,” she explains. “Every individual has very different presentations. I learn from each case in that way and change my treatment to adapt to the person. I learn a lot from my patients.”

Directions

1. In a small bowl, combine salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and garlic. 2. Brush vegetables with olive oil and place in a large bowl. Top with lemon juice and seasoning mixture. Toss to coat evenly. Remove from the grill, sprinkle with parsley, and serve hot.
