Spectacular Views from this Eureka Valley Victorian DreamHome
Nestled into the hillside of Eureka Valley on a quiet, tree-lined street sits this 1904 Queen Anne Victorian with a historic façade, preserved period details, and a seismically reinforced modern structure. This magnificent home has been updated for today’s living, yet its history has been meticulously maintained with picture moldings, pocket doors, and ceiling medallions throughout. Perfectly located just steps from the best of San Francisco, you’ll remove yourself from the heart of the city to your own private escape in just a few short blocks.
Showcasing the elaborate trim of the home’s façade, the Victorian-inspired color scheme was designed and executed by Fine Custom Painting in San Francisco. By undergoing a restoration project in 2007, the façade has been returned to its original glory as well as refined with additional ornamentation. Woven throughout the façade is an exceptional and detailed use of specific hues and gold gilding that serves to accent the Victorian adornments, egg-and-dart moldings, dentil moldings, garlands, and geometric reliefs. To further highlight the home’s exterior, Fine Custom Painting has implemented a subtle, alternating color variant pattern in order to add movement and texture to the home’s half-cove cedar shake shingles, and to draw the eye up to the finial-capped apex of the house. There, atop the façade at the ridge line, a striking and roaring lion sculptural centerpiece overlooks and accentuates the home’s gravitas. Historically speaking, the roaring lion is the architect’s or the owner’s way of indicating power, prestige, or courage. This leonine theme is then echoed on the front door by an English antique brass lion’s-head door-knocker, which greets visitors as they enter the home.
First Impressions To Last A Lifetime. As you approach the house and pass through the brightly-colored flower gardens to ascend the front steps, you’ll be welcomed onto the intimate front porch by an intricate balustrade that includes re-crafted finial and newel posts. You’ll also be greeted by the handsome, original front door with leaded glass, lion in brass relief, and matching brass 4444 numbering. Coming into the home, the formal entry welcomes you and sets the tone of the dwelling’s overall warm spirit. To the right is the gracious and elegant formal living room with wood-burning fireplace, bay window, and pocket doors. True to the Victorian era, the living room forms one half of the double parlor. Encompassing the second half of the parlor is the formal dining room with built-in china cabinet. An elaborate ceiling medallion draws your eye upward where you immediately notice that the home’s placement on the hillside of Eureka Valley allows for city views that will surely only increase dramatically as you ascend to its upper levels. Your mind captures that moment when you begin to understand what makes this house so special: The details, the generous proportions, the refined spaces, and the incredible views will make this more than just a residence. You have found your new home.
Also on the entry level, the chef’s kitchen is spacious and grand in both scale and functionality. Sure to be the center of your daily life, the kitchen was custom built by the previous owner for his wife, who was a gourmet chef. The kitchen is paired with top-of-the-line appliances, expansive workspaces, and rows of custom wood cabinetry that provide tons of storage. Bookending the remodeled kitchen is a walk-through butler’s pantry on one side and a sun-drenched breakfast room on the other side, complete with a built-in desk and a window bench seat, either spot seeming perfect for researching the evening’s dinner menu. Off the kitchen through a sliding- glass door is a large redwood patio suitable for lounging and/ or for a BBQ grill, with stairs leading down to the landscaped garden. Lastly, serving this level and honoring the home’s location in San Francisco’s Castro District, the powder room pays homage to the six-color rainbow flag representing the legacy of gay rights and the history of the neighborhood.
The second-floor staircase leads you to an opulent landing accented with a wall niche historically crafted to display a statue, bust, or vase of fresh-cut flowers. The first two bedrooms on this floor are each endowed with generously- proportioned bay windows that provide southwest light. The third bedroom is sunny and bright with amazing panoramic outlooks of Eureka Valley and downtown. Stealing the spotlight on this level is the fourth and largest bedroom with sweeping views of downtown San Francisco and the bay. A small but functional patio allows you to step outside for a breath of fresh air or to enjoy the daily light show as the sun moves across the city to create an ever-evolving palette of colors and shapes. Adjoining this room is an expansive cedar- lined walk-in closet, and hallway with linen closet. A stylish bathroomserves this floorwithdual vanities, spa tub, elaborate detail, and a lightwell that beckons a future outdoor shower.
The penthouse level of the home is occupied by its crown jewel, the expansive master suite. Upon entering the room from the top of the stairs, you’ll find yourself mesmerized by the stunning, 270-degree views from the bay to downtown and beyond. Here you can wake each morning with the sun as you bask in the glorious natural light, while the twinkling lights at night will lull you to sleep. The master bedroom leaves nothing behind as it is outfitted with custom cabinetry including dressers and drawers, and features a built-in window seat that would be perfect for enjoying a long novel as you overlook the city. The recently remodeled master bathroom showcases dual vanities, a built-in beauty bar, oversized spa-inspired shower, and private water closet. The master bath is serviced by a separate on-demand hot water system, ensuring continuous hot water at your fingertips. Wind your way through the master suite’s expansive dressing room – with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, triple cedar- lined closets, and an integrated dresser – to find yourself at the pinnacle of the home’s amenities. The ultimate destination, the rooftop terrace, provides complete privacy while delivering an absolutely breathtaking vista of the bay area. Perfect for lounging or for a new spa (for which it is already set up), you’ll know you’ve arrived the minute you step out onto this magical view deck. Standing here, you will feel on top of the city – and on top of the world. Truly a must-see. Lastly on this floor, a hidden and surprisingly unique A-frame room under the front of the gabled roof adds to the home’s intrigue and is the ideal place for your work- from-home office, additional walk-in closet, or playroom.
The lower level of the home is everyone’s favorite hobby space. Starting on the right side of this level with a 2+ car garage, wall-mounted storage cabinets, and a separate entrance, you’ll have everything you need at hand. Parallel to the garage, the left side of this level also runs the length of the house, and comprises a complete set of rooms and spaces that will finally allow you the opportunity to tackle those long-overlooked passion projects. Beginning with lots of additional storage and counter space and a large laundry room, this elongated area culminates in a large bonus room, half bath, and yet another sizable patio to provide the canvas for your next project. With decks on each level, the sprawling outdoor space ultimately arrives down at the home’s meticulously landscaped back yard, designed by P-Squared Gardening. With both upper and lower large patio decks separated by a babbling brook water feature, the garden is lush with rich vegetation that features a towering birch tree, and is surrounded by private fencing. This rear garden will become yet another intricate part of your urban getaway as well as the ultimate entertaining space. Finishing the garden level are two storage rooms that are tucked away at the back of the yard. On the right is expansive space for additional storage, while on the left is a wine cellar with integrated security safe.
