Making the Grade What Back-to-School Means to My Family

The beginning of school can inspire different reactions depending on where you are in life. I know most kids wish the first day of school would never come, while many parents wish it started back in July! My family faced our own challenges entering the back-to-school season as my boys moved up through their grade levels. These days, the start of the fall semester is a very different time for us. My sons both graduated from high school years ago. In fact, my oldest son, David, graduated from college this past spring! He finished with a Major in History and Minors in Spanish and Sociology. Seeing your child graduate from college is a proud and somewhat surreal experience. At the beginning of the summer, David studied in Spain for a while to learn more Spanish. He had a great time, and I think the trip proved to be an eye- opening experience. As a History Major, he gained a deep appreciation for Spanish culture as he visited the buildings and battle sites that he’d studied. It gave a lot of real-world context for history as a whole. Beyond academics, David came back home with great respect for what we have in the United States. David told me about seeing places where people lived 10 to a room, and even something as simple to us as air conditioning was a luxury they couldn’t afford. His experiences reenergized his drive to go out and do more in the future. After he returned, David spent the summer studying for the LSAT and completing an internship at a law office in Texas. He plans to become a lawyer and hopes to attend Drake University Law School in Iowa or Texas Tech Law School. I couldn’t be more proud of him. There are some long years of hard work ahead of him, but I know David is capable of handling it.

currently pursuing a Biology Major, with a Minor in French. You may have noticed that languages are a reoccurring theme with my sons. That’s because languages are a big deal in our family. My father speaks English, Spanish, French, Italian, and a little bit of German. I speak both Spanish and English myself, and I like to see my sons follow in their granddad’s footsteps when it comes to language and education. William’s taken an extra step in following the family legacy. He’s already pre-dental, like I was in college, and wants to be an oral surgeon. That means there’s a lot of education in his future, but like his brother, he’s going to take it all in stride. Both of my sons have done really well, and I am so proud of them. I know school can be a challenge at times, for both students and parents, and I want to wish everyone good luck as we enter the new school year. May you start the semester on the right foot and have the best year ever!

DNA Tests Pinpoint Periodontal Bacteria

Each of these microscopic species carries its own distinct genetic blueprint embedded within its DNA. If you’ve ever seen a picture of DNA, you know that it is composed of two separate, twisting strands, connected by a series of “ladder rungs.” These rungs are made up of two separate nitrogen bases, bonded together at the center. Each base only connects to a specific other base — adenine pairs with thymine, and cytosine pairs with guanine. Though the way in which these bases bond is particular, the order in which each pair appears as you move down the “ladder” has an infinite number of permutations. When we investigate this arrangement within the cells of a particular organism, we learn its unique genetic blueprint. Periodontists are now able to extract a sample of the bacteria afflicting your gums with a cotton swab of saliva. Then, the sample is sent to a lab and run through a DNA analysis. The results of the test detail the specific strains of bacteria that are present in the gums, giving the periodontist a much clearer picture of the problem. The first step in combating the enemy under our gums is to know what we’re up against, and DNA testing enables us to do just that.

Treating gum disease can be a tricky process. While prevention and deep cleaning are often effective ways to avoid extreme cases of periodontal disease, things get more complicated once tartar begins to work its way into the deep structures of the gums. But new technologies enable periodontists to pinpoint the cause of gum disease and eliminate it at the source. Periodontal disease arises as swarms of bacteria begin to eat away at the gums. Over 350 discrete species of bacteria participate in the deterioration of human gums, and each of them is utterly unique.

Ingredients • Olive oil • 2 medium ripe avocados, halved • 1 large cucumber, halved • 6 stalks spring onions • 1 jalapeno Directions 1. Preheat grill to medium-high. 2. Coat halved avocados with lemon juice to avoid browning. Brush olive oil over avocados, cucumber, spring onions, and jalapeno. Oil grill while hot. 3. Grill vegetables until everything is grilled or slightly charred. Once grilled, remove and place on platter to cool.

• 1 lemon, juiced • ½ cup cold water • 1 clove garlic • ¾ teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon black pepper

2 Rogue Goats Do They Make Handcuffs for Hooves? He posted a cute picture of them on Facebook with the caption, “Got goats? We do, and they do not belong to us … They are currently riding around with Sgt. Fitzpatrick, serenading him in goat music. Though he is thankful for the company on this cool Sunday morning, he would gladly return them to their owners. He is running out of vegetables to feed them.” Louis and Mowgli appear cool and collected in the photo. (Perhaps it wasn’t their first time in the back of the police car.) Luckily, their owner saw the post and quickly came to retrieve them. To announce their safe return, Fitzpatrick posted another cute selfie with his four-legged friends, saying, “The goats have been returned home. Louis and Mowgli enjoyed their day trip with Sgt. Fitzpatrick, but alas, all good things come to an end. Perhaps in the next budget year we can inquire as to getting some patrol goats.” Look out, K-9 unit. These goats aren’t kidding around.

Why would two goats be in the back of a police car? Did they wander onto private property? Get into a kick-fight at the local bar? Swallow a woman’s prized jewels? Nah. They were just lost. On a Sunday morning, Sergeant Fitzpatrick of the Belfast Police Department in Maine spotted Louis and Mowgli, two pygmy goats who were clearly lost. He shepherded them into the back of his squad vehicle and called it in: “I got two rogue goats here.” He wasn’t worried about the condition of the car. The back of that car had seen more hostile characters in its day.
