Even during the transition process, there were plenty of moments when I realized what a magical place Boise was. I went down to San Jose for Thanksgiving in ’99 to visit Michelle’s family. Running a little late, I feared that I wouldn’t make my flight because of airport security. Well, as any of you who have traveled out of BOI know, that’s not an issue here. Compared to California airports, it felt I walked right up to the plane. The real moment that cemented how much I love it here wasn’t quite so obvious. One day, as I drove down Warm Springs, I passed a home for children. I cannot say exactly why, but something about seeing that made me realize that this is where I belong. I’ll never forget that moment. All of a sudden, I was perfectly at ease. My heart rate dropped back to its normal level, and I knew intrinsically that everything would work out. These days, Boise is our home, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. From those small beginnings, we’ve planted real roots here. I am lucky enough to serve an incredible community of patients and work with doctors that I would do anything for. We’re fortunate to be here and never take this wonderful city for granted.

fitness center on Overland. I visited other physical therapy offices in the area, and enjoyed meeting, and talking with some of Boise’s fine therapists, and other health care professionals. I was excited about working in such a vibrant and active community, and offering my services as an orthopaedic and sports injury physical therapy specialist. By November, I had an office, but patients didn’t really know about me, and my calendar was far from packed. Also, I wasn’t used to cold winters. When people would call the office, I would answer by saying “Ice Station Zebra,” the name of an Arctic base in an old spy movie. Little jokes like these helped me get over some homesickness.

When my family arrived in Boise in May of 1999, I would describe my outlook as one of faithful trepidation. I never doubted that we made the right move for our family, but getting a practice going was a stressful process. I didn’t know anybody — no doctors, no patients, and no friends. I sometimes joke that my heart rate never dropped below 90 for the first year, as I worked day and night to establish myself in the area. The first few months after we moved, I was still in the process of selling my practice in San Diego. When I wasn’t taking phone calls regarding the sale, I drove the streets of the Treasure Valley looking for a future home for Advance Physical Therapy. I inquired about every promising location, from practices in Eagle to a defunct karate studio next to a

FLAXSEED One of the easiest ways to boost your omega-3 fatty acid intake is to add a few tablespoons of ground flaxseed to foods you already eat (freshly ground is best). NUTS Not all nuts are created equal. Almonds and walnuts are kings of the nut world when it comes to nutrition. But between these two nuts, is one truly better than the other? Not really — it all comes down to personal preference. SALMON This is one fishy friend that’s packed with omega-3 fatty acids (notice the trend?). Salmon is one of the heart-healthiest sources of protein you can put on your plate. Other varieties of fish are exceptionally heart-healthy as well, namely sardines and anchovies, but those can be more of an acquired taste for some folks (though they are great in salads).

It helps maintain a more ideal blood pressure and can help reduce the risk of high blood pressure as you age. Because avocados are high in fat — as healthy as it may be — you still want to watch how much you eat. Like any of the foods on this list, consuming too much of a good thing can ultimately negate the positive health benefits. BLUEBERRIES These juicy little blue balls of goodness are packed with antioxidants. Antioxidants help keep cells functioning at peak performance. That includes cells in the brain and those believed to be associated with both short- and long-term memory. Eat blueberries as a snack, toss them in a smoothie, or add a handful to some salad, oatmeal, or cottage cheese.

quickly add up into the tens of thousands. This high repetition associated with golf can put tremendous amount of strain on the body. The high level of repetition associated with the golf swing is bad enough on its own, but making matters worse is the fact that each swing requires the production of a tremendous amount of muscle force. To generate and transfer this force through the body and apply it to the golf ball, there needs to be a significant amount of strength, flexibility, and coordination from virtually every muscle and joint in the body. As long as the muscles and joints are working properly, the chance of injury is greatly reduced; but, as you will see, because of the repetitive nature and high level of muscular forces associated with the golf swing, even minor problems will greatly increase the chances of pain and injury.

When talking about sports injuries, it is important to realize that there are two major types of injuries: acute and repetitive. Acute injuries occur following a single event, such as a fall or hard collision. Fortunately, these types of injuries are rare in golf. On the other hand, repetitive strain injuries are extremely common in golf and make up the vast majority of golf injuries. Repetitive injuries, like the name implies, occur slowly over time as a result of performing the same motions over and over again. As you can see, the golf swing certainly fits into the category of a repetitive motion. For example, over a round of golf or a practice session at the range, a player will take anywhere from 60–100-plus swings. This number may be even higher if practice swings are taken into account. Depending on how often a golfer plays or practices, the number of swings can

information allows for accurate, comprehensive classification of the cause of pain.

One of the chief benefits of physical therapy is the individualized nature of treatment. No two bodies and no two issues are the same. Treatment, then, should be tailored to the needs of each patient. You might be wondering how a therapist decides on the most effective course of treatment for a patient. Here at Advance Physical Therapy, we used the McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), the most widely researched method in the field. The McKenzie Method begins with a thorough assessment of movement tests designed to pinpoint the underlying source of your discomfort. Like all good clinical methods, the McKenzie assessment seeks reproducible, objective, and reliable indicators of the issue. They will also inquire about the nature of your pain — whether it’s acute or chronic, where it radiates from, how far it extends, etc. This assessment will eliminate the need for more invasive and expensive procedures and offers more dynamic feedback than even the most sophisticated imaging available. Once the assessment is complete, your therapist will take stock of the entire picture of your condition. Rather than focusing on one symptom, they use the range of tests to pinpoint a diagnosis. After assessment and classification of your problem, your therapist will develop a course of treatment that best suits your case. This program will involve a series of exercises to centralize and abolish your pain. Matching treatment to assessment is one of the crucial facets of the McKenzie Method. The final component of the McKenzie Method is providing the patient with preventative strategies to limit the risk of reinjury. By giving a patient the tools to quickly manage any symptoms that recur, physical therapy minimizes the number of visits required to achieve an optimal result.

RECIPE: Sensational Summer Salad

How I Found My Home

It’s officially the season of salads, and fruit salads are summer’s specialty! Enjoy this tasty dish as a side or main course. For some added protein, toss in a handful of slivered almonds or chopped pecans.

I guess you could say that I’m a very lucky doodle, given that I got to choose my owners. From the second I saw them, I was determined to make sure they took me home. When two people came to visit my five labradoodle siblings and me, we all did our best to look cute (not that it was too hard). A kind woman, who I would later know as Michelle, picked me up. That was the start of something special. As she nuzzled each of my siblings, I thought about how I would stand out, as I had already felt her love. When she stood alone watching us, I made my move. I shuffled over, and placed my head on her leg. She hugged me, and I cuddled up to her shoulder, expressing “I love you” as best I could. I heard her husband ask, “Is that the one?” I couldn’t see her reaction, but I sensed her smile.

Ingredients

1 heaping tablespoon fresh basil or mint, chopped 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon maple syrup 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

1 pound strawberries, thinly sliced 3 medium peaches, thinly sliced

1 cup blueberries

Directions 1. In a medium serving bowl, combine the strawberries, peaches, blueberries, and basil. 2. Drizzle lemon juice, maple syrup, and balsamic vinegar on top.

3. Gently toss to combine. 4. Serve immediately, or chill for later.
