HELPING TO BUILD A BETTER WORLD

My Dedication to Volunteer Work

to my heart, and a very successful one — nearly 10,000 children across the country have received treatment through the SCL program, with more than 99 percent successfully completing the full treatment. Not only that, I partner with a local, thriving dental practice in Half Moon Bay, donating tens of thousands of dollars in orthodontic treatment to select patients. It just doesn’t seem right to me that the affluent have more ready access to a beautiful smile. After all, everyone deserves to look their best, not to mention the gains to general health that orthodontic care provides. I may be a busy woman, but I take every opportunity to be a force for positive change in the world and in my community. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to lift up others, to afford them the same opportunities that have led to my own success, so that they can thrive.

Human dignity and basic rights is a general

theme in the volunteer work I do. Through one organization, Youth for Human Rights, I work with fellow volunteers to educate communities, especially the young, on the fundamental concepts of human rights. Across the world, there are constant affronts to essential aspects of humanity. It’s vital that we work together to realize those “inalienable rights,” as the declaration says, that are the “foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world.” In addition to those basic tenets, I believe all people should have access to proper orthodontic care. I strive to use my years of experience and expertise as an elite Invisalign provider and orthodontist to give back to those in the community who need treatment the most. That’s why our practice partners with the nationwide Smiles Change Lives organization. We work with them to sponsor orthodontic treatment at no charge to children of families with economic barriers that would otherwise prevent them from coming in. Obviously, it’s an organization close

Ever since I was young, community service has been a central aspect of my life. In my mind, your passions, accomplishments, and success don’t mean much if you fail to spend some time trying to help others achieve happiness and success of their own. For this reason, I work constantly with an array of various volunteer organizations. One of the most powerful and inspiring of these is the International Way to Happiness Foundation, which is dedicated to revitalizing the cultures of the world through a nonreligious, common-sense set of moral precepts. It’s more of a path to follow than a dogmatic code. We’ll spend time in the area distributing pamphlets and peacefully spreading a message of nonviolence, reducing crime and hostility throughout California. In Los Angeles, the police have even begun to use the organization’s simple guidelines to reduce gang activity.

THE WORST KITCHEN UTENSIL EVER Say No to the Avocado Slicer

• thekitchn.com/ from-budget- to-big- spender-10- chefs-knives- for-every- budget-166133 • foodandwine.com/ lifestyle/kitchen/ best-chefs-knife • gentlemansgazette. com/best-knives- home-cook

The avocado slicer. Bon Appétit magazine called this kitchen utensil “the last thing you’ll ever need.” TV chef and host Alton Brown will yell at you if you have one. And if you do have one, ask yourself this: Why? If you don’t have one, pat yourself on the back — you’ve saved yourself from one of the most useless utensils in the world. Okay, but let’s say you do have one. Is it possible to turn this (barely) one-hit wonder into something worthy of your kitchen? We can try. Egg slicer. Hard-boiled eggs can be difficult and messy to slice up for a salad or side dish. That’s why they make egg slicers, a close cousin of the avocado slicer. But here’s the great thing about using an avocado slicer to prep hard-boiled eggs: the clean-up. Cleaning

an egg slicer can be a kitchen nightmare, while avocado slicers are a cinch to clean.

And that’s it. We tried. Considering the highly specialized shape and overall design, you aren’t going to get much mileage out of an avocado slicer. Sure, you can slice mushrooms, various soft fruits, and soft cheeses, but each item must be fairly small to accommodate the shape of the avocado slicer. There is, however, another tool you can use to get the job done. Call it the world’s best kitchen utensil — the chef’s knife. A good, sharp, well-maintained chef’s knife can last a lifetime. It will slice and dice just about any food item you need prepped. Do some research and find the chef’s knife for you. You’ll be glad you did. Here are three resources to get you started:

Pediatric Orthodontic Appliances You May Not Know About BEYOND BRACES

Pediatric orthodontics goes far beyond braces, and it’s important to consider all your child’s options. These solutions can solve orthodontic issues before they become a problem later on. Take the Nance Button, for instance. If your child’s baby teeth decide to pop out a little prematurely — whether via injury or some quirk of biology — they may face a potential problem. The first molars that sprout up through the gums may creep forward in the absence of any teeth to obstruct their motion,

severely crowding other teeth as they erupt. The Nance fixes this with two metal bands that wrap around the back upper molars, braced against a “button” covering a section of the palate. Similar to the Nance is the Lower Lingual Holding Arch, which does essentially the same thing but for the lower teeth. Two metal bands cement to two lower molars, joined together by a bar resting behind the lower teeth — no contact with the gums or any soft tissues, so no irritation. Though, with both

the Nance and the Lower Lingual Holding Arch, thorough oral hygiene is vital to avoid food and bacteria gathering between the appliance and the teeth. If your child’s alignment problem is more severe, Twin Blocks may be the answer. As your child’s bones develop, their jaw might become misaligned. An overjet, which is when the top teeth to stick out much farther than normal from the bottom teeth, is fairly common. With two fitted blocks — one behind the upper teeth and one behind the lower — affixed to dual plates, your child’s lower jaw will be pushed forward into the optimal position. Twin Blocks can help you avoid years of toothaches and cosmetic orthodontics in the future, but in order for them to work, early screening is important.

Where to Watch the Great American Eclipse VIEW OF A LIFETIME

On August 21, 2017, the greatest show of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! This eclipse will be visible across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called The Great American Eclipse. If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence. Columbia, South Carolina Need a place to watch the eclipse in the Southern U.S.? Then get yourself to South Carolina, where the state capital of Columbia is almost right in the middle of the path of totality. Plenty of hotels make Columbia a great viewing location for those who don’t

want to camp out, and the vibrant city life means you’ll have lots to do even when the eclipse is over. Sandhills, North Platte, Nebraska In the heartlands, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more perfect viewing location than the Sandhills of western Nebraska. With wide open skies, low rolling hills, and no towering buildings to get in the way, the Sandhills are sure to be a popular viewing spot. The Museum of Idaho, Idaho Falls, Idaho The Museum of Idaho has been designated an Official NASA Observation Site, and the museum is hosting four days of awesome events to celebrate. Enjoy live presentations, technology demonstrations, and special exhibits as you prepare to watch the total eclipse with NASA scientists.

Visit the official website of The Great American Eclipse at www.
