engaged to the love of my life, and soon actually getting to put a ring on her finger… well, another one at least. I enjoy exploring the outdoors and watching Baltimore Ravens football, or any sports really! Some of my favorites to binge watch are Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, and basically any Jim Carrey movie, so feel free to test my pop culture knowledge when you see me! I am thrilled to be a part of the Atlas Physical Therapy team and I’m looking forward to being a part of more great stories!”

Welcome Garrett! Garrett helps us fill a need at the front desk 3 days per week, and he helps keep us running smoothly in the gym other days. Here’s part of the scoop from Garrett, from his full Bio on our website: “I am a lifelong Pasadena, Maryland resident, or as many call it, “The Dena.” I truly enjoy speaking with others and getting to know their stories, not just their injuries, and trust me, there are no shortages of great stories that I have heard! Outside of work the past few years, I have crossed off some major life milestones: graduating from college, getting

She did a live laser demonstration on an attendee’s knee, and had a really dramatic pain drop from an 8 out of 10 all the way to no pain after! So cool to experience. Easter morning, we got a very special surprise visit from the Easter Bunny!! It’s the first time the girls have met the E.B., and they were tickled! I enjoyed my last official Helping Parent shift for Kathryn’s class when they spent a whole day at Down’s Park. They set up a spotting scope and we got a great look at a Bald Eagle and two eaglets in their huge nest. Kathryn is practicing her whistling and sounds like a mourning dove. Samantha did a great job in the chorus for the 1st Grade Play: Stone Soup. We attended an Enviromental Fair at her school. During the last hour, she set up her own table promoting clean water with her friends! From Dr. Sam: “My Mom, Dad, and sister drove

down from PA for the weekend to celebrate Mother’s Day as well as visit my brother who was in D.C. for the week with his fiancé. Dad, Mom, Rachel (sister), Alissa (girlfriend) and myself had a fun filled Saturday. We started at Sagamore Distillery for their whiskey tour and had an amazing lunch. We then traveled to Fort McHenry and learned a lot about the birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner. We Finished at Camden Yards to watch the Orioles play. It was an enjoyable day to show my family what Baltimore has to offer.” We hope you made or reflected on your own Mother’s and Father’s Day memories! - Dr. Laura Sanner, Founder of Atlas PT

Stiff knees? Try this: While lying on your back place a belt, towel, strap or bed sheet around your foot and start by pulling with your arms to bend your knee into a bent position until a gentle stretch is felt, hold 10 seconds. BERR Y ALMOND SMOOTH I E BOWL

“I came to PT after experiencing pain in my shoulder and elbow that gradually became worse. I had tingling in my arm almost all the time. I would wake up several times per night with terrible pain and tingling in my arm that ran all the way to my fingers, and limited my normal workout routines that left me feeling weak. I couldn’t do planks, push-ups, or many upper body activities. I changed my posture to eliminate or lessen pain, which was only creating more of an issue. After many, many weeks of continued strength building, stretching exercises and nerve glide work, I am able to say that I no longer have pain. I sleep through the night. No more tingling! Range of motion has increased, as has my general strength. I feel great!” - Jennifer K. 2 Name:

HERE’S HOW TO HELP MOBILITY AND MUSCLE TENSION WITHOUT MEDICATION… THE BUZZ ABOUT DRY NEEDLING. WHAT IS IT? WHAT DOES IT DO?

Do you suffer from constant knots in your shoulders, legs or back? Does your mobility limit life?

Why Dry Needling? Dry Needling eliminates knots, tension and improves how you move without medication. What Is Dry Needling? It is a treatment used to treat pain that comes from your muscles. A small, solid needle is placed directly into the muscle knot or spot that hurts to help break the pain cycle. How Does Dry Needling Work? By using dry needling your goal is to eliminate pain. Dry needling does this by: • Stopping chemicals your body releases that trigger pain. • Relieving stubborn muscle knots. • Helping your body move better once the muscle knots are gone. • Allows you to use your muscles the right way when they don’t hurt. What Does It Help? Dry Needling can help relieve pain for the following conditions: • Neck, back, shoulder, or arm pain. • Headaches, even headaches caused by jaw pain, migraines, and tension. • Leg and pain in the butt (sciatica, hamstring strains, calf tightness or spasm). Isn’t Dry Needling The Same As Acupuncture? Both use thin needles, but dry needling uses typically one at a time, where acupuncture uses many. Acupuncture typically leaves the needles in for an extended period time in the skin. For dry needling they are inserted directly into the muscle for an average of 1-2 minutes to each muscle knot.

Does It Hurt? Most patients say they don’t even feel the needle go in. When the muscle reacts to the needle sometimes the patients say they can feel an electrical zing;others feel a deep cramping sensation, both are good results. The relief or benefits are felt later once the muscle knot is gone. How Many Treatments Does It Typically Take? Typically, it takes several visits to get a positive reaction to take place. We are trying to get the body to ease the knots, get the body to stop releasing the pain chemicals, and allow your body to finally move normally. One session may reduce the pain and shrink the area that hurts but each additional application helps reduce pain and get you back to normal, faster. Who Is It For? • People with muscle pain or knots. • People who can’t quite get to 100% with Physical Therapy alone. • People who have just that one spot that hurts. • High school age or older. SEE WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT ATLAS PT

“I can walk my dog, Atlas, for longer than I used to.” “I went into PT just hoping to learn a few exercises I could do without hurting myself. What I found instead was a friendly, helpful environment that has benefitted every aspect of my life. I can stand and walk more easily. I can walk my dog, Atlas, for longer than I used to. Plus, when normal exercises weren’t quite enough, I tried dry needling and I was shocked at how much it helped my muscle pain! It even minimized the constant clicking in my knees.” - Chelsie C.

“Every time I came in with a headache and got needled, the headache was gone.”

“Myexperiencewasamazing.Beforecominghere, Iwasdizzy24/7andhadmomentswhere the room was spinning. I had no balance and migraines every day. Now, I can look up, down, side to side, and be fine! No room spinning and no migraines. Every time I came in with a headache and got needled, the headache was gone. I now feel like I have more muscle movement as well. I feel an amazing difference.” - Stacie P.

“...it’s helping me get my life back, piece by piece.” “I receive dry needling for chronic low back pain. It is uncomfortable, but tolerable. And it’s definitely worth it! It’s allowed me to participate more actively in PT, which has enabled me to begin to do more activity outside of PT, like kayaking. Combined with the rest of my treatment plan, it’s helping me get my life back, piece by piece.” - Ashlyn D.

“Working with the Atlas therapists has been truly a journey...” “Ihavebeendealingwithchronicpain, andattempting tomanage it, formostofmy life.Working with the Atlas therapists has been truly a journey; one that has brought the most beneficial success in my pain management endeavors to date. We reached a plateau of what I was capable of doing with physical therapy alone. It was recommended by my rheumatologist and my physical therapist that I attempt a dry needling session. The goal of dry needling is “to improve Neuro-Musculo-Skeletal function, restore motion and possibly induce a healing response to the tissue.”At theskilledhandsofLauren, Icanattest to the fact that Ihavegained further mobility and a reduction in my overall pain. I have since done several dry needling sessions and each needling session, along with continued physical therapy, has benefited me and unlocked new potential. The dry needling performed at Atlas Physical Therapy, in my opinion, is excellent. Lauren communicates extremely well, is very professional, and has very steady hands.” - Jason H.
