DECEMBER 2018

3  New Year’s

3. Give Up Smoking, and Encourage Your Friends to Quit Anyone who smokes in this era has no excuses left. It doesn’t make any sense. I have many clients who come in for Botox, fillers, and facials — and then they smoke. Smoking is so detrimental to the skin, and as long as they smoke, they won’t get the full benefits of their treatments. Giving up smoking is the most profound and effective way to halt aging. It is very hard, but you can do it! I notice a big change in my patients who give it up. Lean on a friend, use resources, and replace the habit with something positive, like running, reading, or drinking more water.

 Resolutions for 2019

Focus on Your Health

It’s a new month, and almost a new year. Can you believe it? Christmas will be here before we know it! I’m glad to see you’re getting your facial treatments in before the holiday parties. A visit with our estheticians can be a nice, relaxing indulgence to help you prepare for an event. You know what I like about this time of year besides the holidays? This is your opportunity to make a plan so you can make next year a healthier one. There are three things I recommend to every patient who makes good New Year’s resolutions. 1. Find a Workout You Love One in three women over 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures, and one in five men will. But this doesn’t have to be you; there are ways you can build stronger bones now . The main way? Exercise. Research shows that people who are active are less likely to have a hip fracture, so find something active that you like to do. Walking is good for your bones and can help maintain bone strength. Anything that is weight bearing, like running, weight lifting, or dancing, is also beneficial. If you prefer, try a workout that improves your balance. In one study of tai chi, patients who took lessons and practiced twice a day on their own for 15 weeks were half as likely to fall as those who didn’t do the daily practice. Maybe 2019 is the year to try out a workout you’ve never done before! 2. Have Your Hormone Levels Checked As we age, our hormone levels change, and sometimes we need to add supplements to return our bodies to balance. I encourage patients to take vitamin C, especially during the winter, to protect their immune system. Unless you already have a lot of vitamin D in your system, take vitamin D supplements, too. You’ll find out your levels when you have your hormones checked, and almost everyone is low. Although it’s especially beneficial to take vitamins in the winter, since we don’t spend as much time outside, I often recommend taking them all year.

Once you’ve made resolutions, schedule your visit with our estheticians, as they are your best resources on beauty. I hope I’ve given you some ideas for the year to come. This way, you can get a head start on 2019 and begin the year at your best.

Happy Holidays!

Surviving the Season of Sweets

HOW TO INDULGE YOUR SWEET TOOTHWITH LESS SUGAR Cookies, cakes, and pies, oh my! The holiday season is brimming with sweet treats of all kinds. Sometimes it can feel like candy and sugary desserts are around every corner, and yet you still want to indulge. However, when you consider that over 50 percent of Americans are insulin-resistant, prediabetic, or diabetic, that piece of pumpkin pie with whipped cream starts to look more dangerous than appetizing. During the holidays, how can you satisfy your sweet tooth without worrying about consuming excessive sugar and calories? Skip the candy and go for the fruits and nuts. Keeping a bowl of fruit and nuts nearby can help keep sugar cravings at bay. Dried fruits, such as cranberries, pineapple, or apricots, are both sweet and nutritious. Just be sure to check the packaging for added sugars. You can even make your own dried fruit with a food dehydrator. This way, you are completely in control of the ingredients. No matter what you do, just be mindful not to overindulge. Dried fruit is high in sugar and calories, but the fiber and vitamins make fruit much healthier than just about any other sugary treat. Another way to cut down on your sugar intake is to use dark chocolate in all your chocolate-based treats. Dark chocolate has about half as much sugar as milk chocolate, twice as much healthy fat, less cholesterol, 4–5 times more iron, twice as much potassium, fewer carbs, and more flavonoids and theobromine. The antioxidant properties of the theobromine and flavonoids make dark chocolate as good for your heart as it is for your soul. If you have a recipe that calls for chocolate, reach for the dark stuff, whether it’s dark chocolate chips, cocoa powder, or baking chocolate. While it may seem as though everyone and their grandma is overindulging in sugar this season, know that you have the choice to opt for healthier sweets. And come New Year’s, you won’t have to spend the first few months of 2019 working off that extra cookie weight.

KICK-START

the Renewal Process

ENERGIZE YOUR SKINWITH THERMAGE

Skin contouring and firming without surgery? Yes, it is possible! Using focused energy that both heats and cools at intervals, Thermage kick-starts the body’s renewal process to deliver firmer, smoother skin within days of treatment. The rejuvenating benefits can address skin issues related to age and environmental factors by targeting areas below the surface — all while remaining noninvasive. The innovative treatment utilizes radio frequency to deliver gentle vibrations to the skin as the effective combination of heating and cooling produces noticeable firming and rejuvenation, often in as little as one day. Heat is focused below the surface of the skin to promote growth within the deep tissue, while cooling is applied to the surface to protect the skin and provide increased comfort. While we have offered Thermage for a while, only our latest version includes patented Comfort Pulse Technology, providing interspersed cooling to make the treatment even more relaxing. Your physician will also communicate with you throughout the process to see that you are feeling comfortable while attaining maximum results.

Thermage can be used on the face as well as other parts of the body for contouring and firming. The treatments last for about 45 minutes for the eyes or face and up to 90 minutes for larger areas, and most people return to their regular lifestyles right away. Other than some slight redness, there will be few to no noticeable signs that you’ve had anything done. Like giving your house a new coat of paint and new flooring, think of Thermage like a collagen remodeling — like if your home kept repainting itself. As the body produces new collagen, the collagen matrix thickens and creates a smoothing effect, which can continue long after treatment. Ready to see if Thermage is right for you? Talk to Dr. Sanchez to find out how you can kick-start your skin’s renewal process and bring your youthful look into the holidays.

GET YOUR VITAMINS

On the cover, Dr. Sanchez mentions the importance of keeping your health in balance. Here are three vitamins that are connected to your health and well-being. Vitamin C Important to the body’s healing process, this vitamin is also an antioxidant. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, berries, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and spinach. Vitamin D The main source of this vitamin is sunlight, which causes a chemical in the skin to convert into an active form of the vitamin. It’s important for bone health, as it aids in the absorption of calcium. Vitamin E In addition to being important to your vision and skin, vitamin E also contains antioxidants that protect your body from free radicals. You can find this vitamin in leafy greens, olive oil, and almonds.

4 Methods That Helped Celebrities Kick the Habit How Stars Like Anjelica Huston Stopped Smoking

Social Media Whoopi Goldberg turned to social media to stop smoking. By sharing her efforts on Twitter, Goldberg gained accountability and support from her followers and used this encouragement as fuel to give up the habit. Others, like Courtney Cox, have leaned on the support of a partner to stop smoking. Reading Allen Carr’s book “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking,” has celebrity fans, including Anjelica Huston, Ellen Degeneres, Ashton Kutcher, and Sir Anthony Hopkins. Huston says the Easy Way method “achieved for me a thing that I thought was not possible — to give up a 30-year smoking habit overnight. It was nothing short of a miracle.” Hypnosis Celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Paul Rudd, Matt Damon, and Chelsea Handler turned to hypnosis and say that it helped them successfully stop their nicotine addiction. Although they don’t endorse it, the American Cancer Society recognizes that some people have found it helpful.

What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve done for a cigarette? Chelsea Handler reportedly once paid $500 to have cigarettes delivered to her door, an act that prompted her to quit once and for all. It turns out that giving up cigarettes isn’t just challenging for regular folks; even superstars find it difficult. To kick the habit for good, they’ve turned to everything from yoga to hypnosis. Yoga Jennifer Aniston is among the celebrities who say yoga helped them give up smoking. She credits the addition of the daily calming exercise to helping her put an end to her not-so-healthy habit. Charlize Theron is another star who attributes adopting a healthier lifestyle that incorporated a yoga routine to helping her quit.
