IP, Cascades Announce Board Price Increases
Fosber Makes ‘Quantum’ Leap In North America BY JACKIE SCHULTZ
Memphis, Tennessee based International Pa- per last week announced a $60/ton domestic linerboard and medium price increase and Kingsey Falls, Quebec, Canada based Cas- cades announced increases of $60/ton for linerboard and $70/ton for medium. The announcement follows earlier re- ported increases by Packaging Corporation of America, which announced a $70/ton in- crease and Greif, which announced a $50/ton increase for all grades of uncoated recycled paperboard, a $70/ton increase on recycled and semi-chemical medium, and a $60/ton in- crease on recycled linerboard. All increases are effective at the beginning of March 2021. With this issue, Board Converting News has adjusted the Average Containerboard Prices on its page 3 chart by $50/ton for Kraft Liner and Semi-Chem Medium to reflect the increases announced by major paper suppli- ers late last year. As the chart states, average prices are tabulated from prices PAID by var- ious sources in North America and are only intended for purposes of reference. They do not connote any commitment to sell any ma- terial at the indicated average.
After considerable investment and R&D efforts between Quantum Cor- rugated and the Fosber Group, Fosber America is now ready to launch a new version of the Quantum corrugator in North America. The new line is being marketed as “Quantum by Fosber.” Introduced in 2015,
there are currently about a dozen Quantum installations worldwide, in- cluding one in the U.S. It was recently updated after the Fosber Group acquired 60 percent of Agnati and established a new company called Quantum Corrugated. The announcement last year of Fosber’s intent to acquire Agnati drew keen interest considering both manufacturers offer full line corru- gators. However, the redundancy stops at the Quantum, according to Jeff Pallini, President of Fosber America. “We saw a real future for the Quantum technology,” he says. Fosber offers three lines of what are considered traditional cor- rugators for high- and mid-volume box plants. The Quantum doesn’t compete with those lines. Instead it serves the specialized markets of microflute corrugated and high-end graphics, and soon will have lami- nating capabilities. Key sections of the machine were re-engineered to include Fos- ber’s proven technology while keeping Quantum’s patented innova- tions to preserve its niche appeal. The new line now includes Fosber Fosber America recently completed a 40,000-square-foot expansion of its headquarters in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

Toronto. At age 32, he was hired as national sales manag- er of Bathurst Containers in Montreal where he remained for four years. He returned to Toronto and worked with an independent sheet plant for two years before starting his own company, Cameron Containers, in 1968. While an owner he was one of a small group of inde- pendents in the Toronto area to become charter members AICC at its founding in 1974. He remained active in the industry even after the sale of his company. In 2005, Hugh was named a member of AICC Canada’s Hall of Fame. Hugh is survived by Bernardine, his wife of 67 years, four daughters, 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchil- dren. Contributions can be made in Hugh’s name to his favorite charity, The Salvation Army.

Advantage Corrugated & Packaging Invests In Third Kolbus Machine With more than a decade in business, Advantage Corru- gated & Packaging, a Hopkins, Minnesota manufacturer and distributor of boxes, is continuing its expansion and growth with a third machine from Kolbus America in three years—an AutoBox AB 300. The firm, which caters to cus- tomers who need cost effective, short and medium run manufacturing for their specially-sized corrugated ship- ping containers, industrial packaging, and point-of-sale, signed the contract in December 2020 and will install its newest investment in early February 2021. Advantage has assembled a diversified base of cus- tomers within the state from the manufacturing industry, to printers, and corrugated brokers. “We offer a wide ar- ray of capabilities and solutions to our customers who require cardboard corrugated packaging,” says Dave Po- boisk, President of Advantage Corrugated. “Our team of employees manufactures everything from small boxes to extra-large boxes many of which do not fit the capabilities of our competition. The new Kolbus machine has the abil- ity to run as large a corrugated sheet as our raw material manufacturer can produce.” The new Kolbus AutoBox AB 300 machine provides Advantage with the flexibility and versatility to produce more than 100 different box styles from one panel folders
to extra large containers. It is the only machine on the mar- ket that can set itself in less than one minute from one job to the next. Operators appreciate its user-friendliness due to its capability of automatically changing box styles and sizes with a touch screen. No tooling is necessary; Advan- tage operators just input the job that they want to run and the AutoBox sets itself in seconds. “Due to the wide variety of box jobs that come to us, we rely on the Kolbus AutoBox to enable us to turn a special- ized job from layout to conversion in a very timely manner,” says Poboisk. Advantage purchased its newest AutoBox machine in December 2020 after having installed the Boxer and Pro-Gluer in 2017. While the firm has seen an upward tra- jectory since it opened its doors in 2009, the current pan- demic and the growth of e-commerce has certainly boost- ed box production due to the need of manufacturers to utilize corrugated boxes to send products. “We didn’t look at any other manufacturers,” says Po- boisk. “Kolbus America has been a wonderful partner.
