Rondo-Pak Launches Major Solar Energy Project In NJ Camden, New Jersy based Rondo-Pak an- nounced that it has chosen Dynamic Energy LLC, a leading independent renewable en- ergy company, to deliver solar power to its Camden, New Jersey operations. Rondo-Pak, which produces folding car- tons and printed components for the pharma- ceutical, medical device and consumer indus- tries, will invest over $4 million in the major solar project. Once installed, the project will provide 2.2 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy per year – equal to over 1.7 million pounds of coal burned annually. The rooftop solar array and carports will cover the entire facility and over 90 percent of the parking lots. Over 25 years, the system will generate approximately 52.6 million kilo- watt-hours of electricity and is expected to provide at least 60 percent of the electricity needs at the facility. Dynamic Energy will pro- vide engineering, procurement and construc- tion services for the project. For quite some time now, manufacturers have been carefully watching and planning for workforce changes as baby boomers and other older employees decide to retire.

According to a study by The Manufacturing Institute, the vast major- ity (78 percent) of companies indicated that they were “very or some- what” concerned about the impending aging workforce exodus. More concerning, however, is the concurrent brain drain that accompanies those retirements. For those companies who aren’t yet ready to deal with this pressing issue (or maybe are in the process of addressing it), the following numbers, courtesy of the Panopto Workplace Knowledge and Productivity Report, paint a dire picture: • As of 2017, nearly 25% of the manufacturing workforce was 55 or older. • By 2030, one in five Americans will be 65 or older. • In 2018, the median age of a manufacturing worker was 44.1, com- pared to 42 for the total labor force. • Lack of knowledge transfer is estimated to cost large businesses $47 million per year due to time waste, missed opportunities, frus- tration and delayed projects. Based on industry research, articles, best practice claims and case studies, the four themes found below have emerged on how the manu- facturing industry can effectively address this issue. ‘Chasing Arrows’ Symbol No Longer Just Symbolic BY MARY DRAIN

Many states in the U.S. are now working to increase the transparency of recycling labels and symbols. The aim is

to get to the root of industries us- ing symbols, such as the chasing arrows, with little-to-no correlation to what is actually being recycled. The chasing arrows symbol has been around since 1970 when a corrugated company called Container Corporation of Amer- ica (CCA – a distant ancestor of

packaging company. Our industry’s long-standing com- mitment to recovery efforts has led to an extraordinary success story in the recovery of old corrugated containers (OCC). Today, corrugated is the most recycled packaging material on the planet with a U.S. recovery rate hovering near 90 percent for the last decade. The problem though is not those who use the symbol on products and packaging that are verifiably recycled, but those who use the symbol in spite of the FTC’s Green Guides instructions for “recyclable” claims. This behavior

deceives consumers into thinking that their product/package will be recycled at a level greater than or equal to 60 percent. A 2019 study from the Consumer Brand Association shows that most U.S. consum- ers presume that all items marked with the three arrow symbol are recyclable when that is not the case at all. While most plastic products have a recycling symbol, actually less than 10 percent is currently and has historically been recycled annually. The re- mainder goes to landfill or is burned. On October 5th, California’s Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill 343 (SB 343) prohibiting the use of the chasing arrows symbol on non-recyclable products and packaging. Under the new law, a product or packaging that displays the chasing arrows symbol or any other symbol or statement, that indicates it is recyclable, is deceptive or misleading unless the product is “recy- clable” in accordance with California-spe- cific regulations and is of a material type and form that routinely becomes feedstock used in the production of new products or packaging. Here are six mindsets to reboot your team: 1. Clarity —Is your Mission clear? Is your Vision clear? Are your Values for how your team is com-mitted to travel clear? Is your Strategy for the next priorities clear? Take this time as an opportunity to reboot and make sure all are aligned with clarity. The outcome is that everything on the path forward becomes clearer. Your team may not have all the answers, but they’ll have energy and clear direction on how to take the next step. 2. Inclusivity — Leaders in the world play an enormous role in widening the circle so that more diverse backgrounds, ideas, perspectives, and experiences have a seat at the table. Teams and organizations will lead the way forward in society by modeling how to have civil, respectful dia- logue and educate people on the strengths of diversity, equity and inclu- sion. When our teams are welcoming, it breathes life and energy into all. . 3. Agility — Possibility + Adaptability is the name of the game in a chang- ing world. Leaders have to practice an occasional reboot that allows their mind to find new ways of doing things and the courage to adapt to opportunities that emerge. If leaders return to the “this is the way we’ve always done it” mindset then they will sit back and watch their people leave the room. 4. Grit — Resolve + Toughness is critical to help people navigate their way through obstacles, challenges, negativity, finger pointing, and divi- sion. Leaders help their people reboot to stay focused on the present moment and the actions that are needed in order to take the next step. Toughness isn’t about being physically stronger than others, it is about being able to be vulnerable with your people and still have the resolve to find solutions, together.

FBA Welcomes Kammerer As New Manager Of Technical Services Fibre Box Association (FBA) announced that it will wel- come a new Manager of Technical Services on November 1, 2021. Chase Kammerer will join Mary Alice Drain, Direc- tor of Technical Services. Kammerer will manage the FBA standing technical committees (Technical, Environmental, and Health & Safety) by administering agendas, minutes, and other meeting concerns. He’ll also work with the com- mittees to ensure that the technical publications in our FBA store are current. Beginning late last year, FBA committees meet virtually every six to eight weeks instead of twice a year in person. The boosted schedule has increased each of the commit- tee’s capability to stay better connected and advanced their project slate. The committees have been tackling more of their goals and it will be beneficial to have another technical staff member to facilitate additional work. The Technical Committee has already completed two research projects in 2019 and 2020 on environmental fac- tors and box design. A 2021 project funded by the ICPF on score profiles and their effect on BCT, has just begun. In addition, ICPF has approved a 2022 project related to pal- let overhang. The research projects have also sparked re- newed interest from university research labs on additional corrugated packaging research ideas.

Baumer hhs Launches Hot Melt System For E-Commerce Packaging Dayton, Ohio based Baumer hhs has announced the launch of its new hot melt system for e-commerce packag- ing. Designed to meet the growing demand for high-quality delivery boxes with pressure-sensitive adhesive closures, the turnkey system includes an energy-efficient melter, application head, controller, product guide, and durable mount with precision settings. Baumer hhs is a leader in detecting and dispensing cold and hot melt adhesives used to produce folding car- tons, corrugated packaging, post press graphic arts, and carton and case erecting and sealing. “Our new system enables e-commerce packaging pro- ducers to apply pressure-sensitive adhesives on corrugat- ed and cardboard with consistent uniformity and quality, resulting in better sealed boxes that ship reliably,“ said Rick Pallante, President of Baumer hhs USA and Canada. PPEC Celebrates 20th Anniversary Of Waste Reduction Week In Canada BY RACHEL KAGAN The Paper & Paperboard Packaging Environmental Coun- cil (PPEC) is pleased to have celebrated the 20th anniver- sary of Waste Reduction Week in Canada. Waste Reduction Week is an

and a rise in e-commerce – the national recycling rate for corrugated boxes is estimated by PPEC to be at least 85 percent, while Ontario has a 98 percent recovery rate for corrugated cardboard. Keeping these materials in the recycling stream allows PPEC member mills to primarily use recycled fibres in their products. Recycled content is a key component of the Ca- nadian paper-based packaging industry’s circular econ- omy, keeping raw materials flowing for longer, reducing waste, and allowing them to be remade into new paper packaging products by PPEC member mills.
