Practicing the 6-Inch Step How a College Football Exercise Became a Life Exercise

When I think about August, I think about two things: football and life lessons. From elementary school into college, then through my career in adulthood, I’ve spent this month, every year watching, playing, or practicing football, and I’ve learned plenty of valuable lessons along the way. My dad who coached high school football for 31 years was a huge part of these lessons. To me, football is a teaching tool for so many things in life. You learn the importance of having teammates, relying on those teammates, doing your job well, and valuing the role you play. Perhaps most importantly, football teaches the importance of practice. In college, I played as an offensive lineman at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky, and our practice sessions were intense. The other linemen and I would spend the first 20 minutes of every practice taking and practicing what we called our “6-inch step.”We’d get in our stance then start moving one foot, and one foot only. First, we’d move it forward 6 inches, then forward at a 45-degree angle, then to the side 6 inches, and then back 6 inches. Then you’d switch and do the same exercise with the other foot. This common toil has led to life lessons and lifelong friends. I did this exercise for 20 minutes of every practice until my very last practice before my last game in college, and it became muscle memory. Now, I haven’t played football since 1995, but my feet can still do those 6-inch steps. To me, this practice is more than just a college football exercise. It has so many applications to your life when you consider it with this one question in mind: What are the 6-inch steps that can benefit your life? “When I think about August, I think about two things: football and life lessons.”

If, for instance, you are married, ask yourself what are the little things you can do for that relationship that will make a huge difference? Or if you’re more focused on general success, what are the goals and plans you’ve put in place that will help you succeed? If you’re trying to stay healthy, what are the 6-inch steps you’re doing to bolster your well-being? No matter what your situation may be, creating and implementing your own 6-inch steps will make a significant difference in your life. Over the years, I’ve created 6-inch steps for a number of my personal goals. My 6-inch steps for spiritual success involve praying, meditating, reading Scripture, and serving people in one way, shape, or form every day. As a dad, I came up with 6-inch steps I can do daily that will help me become a successful father. I know I need to spend casual time with my kids every day, in addition to making sure to spend more intentional time with them too. Whatever your 6-inch steps are, they can have a big effect on your life. Those little things you do make a difference. And when you practice your 6-inch steps, they will stick with you. They’ll become so ingrained that they become muscle memory, and you can improve yourself without even thinking about it. One of my goals is to write a book on the 6-inch step to help my readers create their own. Along the way — you guessed it — I’ll be using my own 6-inch steps to accomplish that goal.
