The Trend Is Your Friend
I recently met with a new client who had seen a number of other financial advisors. He was not happy with any of those advisors because he did not like their portfolio philosophy. He told me they were all firm believers in the buy and hold approach. That is, after they build the portfolio, they just leave it.
The remaining 30% is made up of individual stocks. While exact percentages can vary, it roughly follows a 70/30 model.
The individual stocks follow a breakout model. I target seven stocks that get rebalanced every month. Algorithms monitor the S&P 500 and determine breakout stocks — companies that are trending up — that may fit within the portfolio. There will always be stocks in breakout mode. By using this approach, many people have benefited over the last year. We identified several breakout stocks, most of which were related to the pandemic. As tragic as the pandemic has been, a number of companies did very well, and my clients were able to take advantage of that. So, while we look for opportunities to get in, we also look for indications that it’s time to get out. We look at eight different parameters that inform us as to an ETFs viability. If all eight are negative and performance is disappointing, it’s time to go.
