V&A LECTURE No need to introduce this venerable art institution found- ed in 1852. It was originally part of the Great Exhibition and known as the Museum of Manufactures—a long way from the magnificent fashion exhibits for which it is now famous. Did you know the museum sits on 12.5 acres of land, has 145 galleries and 4.5 million objects? The museum owns the triangle of land in front of its entrance and across the street so that the view of its majestic doors will never be blocked.

London Wednesday, February 24 Cultured Conversations The first day of our trip is spent in London enjoying some exceptional lectures. Accessing the VIP program of Collect art fair, we learn from the experts at the V&A and Sotheby’s. Is there a better way to explore the cultural life of a city? SOTHEBY’S LECTURE Join Sotheby’s specialists Julia Fischel and Robin Cawdron-Stewart as they take a look at some of their top picks from ceramic and glass at Collect 2021, talk about artists to watch and the hottest trends in galleries and at auction.

V&A LECTURE Join Christine Checinska, British

womenswear designer, art historian and Curator of African and African Diaspora Fashion at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Anne Toomey, Head of Programme and Reader in Smart Textiles at the Royal College of Art to discuss their selection of stand-out objects at this year’s Collect Art fair. Theywill introduce you to the work of new emerging makers as well as established textile artists.

STYLISH BEGINNINGS Sotheby’s founder, Samuel Baker, was an entrepreneur, occasional publisher and successful bookseller who held his first auction under his own name on March 11, 1744. The dispersal of “several hundred scarce and valuable books in all branches of polite literature” from the library of Sir John Stanley fetched a grand total of £826. Baker designed en- ticing advertising campaigns and produced authoritative catalogues. He was, as one colleague noted, a “joyous fellow” with a fondness for plum-coloured coats.

ARTIST Ane Christensen exhibits her work at the Goldsmiths’ Fair

London Thursday, February 25 We virtually spend the day in London traveling from the Goldsmiths’ Hall to Notting Hill and Marylebone (my favou- rite London village). The art- ists we’ll discover come from around the globe. GOLDSMITHS’ LECTURE We explore the Goldsmiths’ Company’s rich history, which dates back to 1327. Its mandate— then and now—is to regulate the goldsmithing trade and enforce hallmarking standards for the pre- cious metals being used.

GILDED TALES The Goldsmiths’ Company is one of London’s iconic ‘Great XII’ Livery companies. For this year’s lecture, which is entitled “Jewellery and Precious Metalwork,” they are holding a panel discussion with Katy Wickremesinghe, founder of KTW London, Lizzie Atkins, a freelance researcher, writer and jeweller and Stephen Webster, who is a liveryman of the Goldsmiths’ Company. The three noted experts will be discussing their favourite pieces from this year’s Collect Art Fair.

GALLERY Goldsmiths’ Centre ARTIST Melanie Eddy Melanie Eddy creates sculptural pieces that use geometry to help explore and define the relationship between the body and a piece of bejewelled metal. “I have always loved geometry—how it informs the art world—as well as the buildings and the landscapes we spend time in... Jewelry, to me, is a form of intimate architecture,” says Melanie.

CRAFTING A DIFFERENCE, MARYLEBONE A curated selection of works in ceramic, glass, metal, paper, textile and wood by over 35 artists will be exhibited across the four floors of SoShiro, a splendid Georgian townhouse in Marylebone. Five London- based contemporary craft and visual art galleries have forged an unprecedented relationship to bring together an ambitiously diverse selection of work in early 2021. “Crafting a Difference” at SoShiro gallery, is a positively defiant act of coming together at a time when so many have been forced apart.

GALLERY Cavaliero Finn ARTIST Frances Priest , Gathering Places Frances Priest’s clay works explore and interpret the languages of ornament from different cultures, places and periods in history. From her Edinburgh studio Frances creates intricate and colourful ceramic objects that celebrate her fascination for ornament and pattern, using clay as a canvas on which to build richly drawn and layered surfaces of inlaid line, glaze colour and enamel decals.

GALLERY jaggedart ARTIST Kazuhito Takadoi , HOKO Inspired by the rich woodland surrounding his birthplace of Nagoya, Japan, Kazuhito grows and hand picks grasses, leaves and twigs from his garden, sowing each blade through the paper. As the grasses dry and mature they embark on a subtle colour shift, comparative to seasonal change. His inspiration comes from many places: an unusual rock formation, a twisted tree branch, clouds in the sky. Nature is just full of inspiration. It is then a matter of matching the material to an idea.

GALLERY Ting & Ying ARTIST Zhao Jinya , Existent Existence II, No. 13 Zhao Jinya sees glass as an ideal medium to explore the themes of environment, emotions and personal experiences. Her intention is to playfully explore how glass can affect the viewers’ perception of reality and to engender emotional responses. For this collection she uses opaque and transparent layered blown glass to deliberately obscure the interior of the specific enigmatic forms. This cre- ates a paradoxical interpretation of what is interior or exterior. To this end Jinya aims to evoke the ‘non-existent existence’.

TEA TIME Time to relax over a

spot of tea with London gallerist Andrea Harari and artist Charlotte Hodes. Andrea’s gallery has a reputation for showing work that is poetic as well as championing work that shows the artists’ involvement and their love of craftsmanship.

TEMPTRESS IN A TEAPOT Charlotte Hodes began her life as an artist in the midst of the ‘70s feminist movement. She was at art school in London studying painting—a medium that feminist artists rebelled against as she says it was represented by a kind of “male her- oism that women wanted to move away from.” Hodes says her work challenges the notion of the female muse—the one who is subservient to the male genius or male ego. Her women aren’t following a conventional path. “People ask me if my work is a self-portrait,” notes Charlotte. “I think there’s some truth in that. I’m probably a quiet egoist at heart.”

TRAVEL AND THE ART OF IMAGINATION

I ’ve chosen a collection of books and created a playlist that will pique your imagination in advance of our virtual adventure. As Elizabeth Dunn told a New York Times reporter, “Anticipation is such a valuable source of pleasure.” Dunn, who is professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, studies anticipation and happiness. She spoke of a “happiness reset” we’ll all feel when we take our first real travel adventure post pandemic. Meanwhile, consider this your virtual warmup act to rekindle that sense of wonder. - ISABELLE

CLOTH THAT CHANGED THE WORLD: THE ART AND FASHION OF INDIAN CHINTZ This scholarly yet sumptuous book covers over a thousand years of the history of printed and painted cotton in its 300-plus pages, which are light- ened by lavish illustrations. Published to coincide with a show at the Royal Ontario Museum (4 April – 27 Sep- tember 2020), essays range from sacred wall hangings in Indonesia and luxury dress in 18th-century Europe, to blockprinting in high fashion today.

OUR ISLES: POEMS CELEBRATING THE ART OF RURAL TRADES AND TRADITIONS This unusual project explores countryside crafts in two ways: poetry and printmaking. Each of Angus Birditt’s 30 poems focuses on a single occupation – from blacksmith to farrier, thatcher to drystone waller – and are accompa- nied by Lilly Hedley’s characterful monochrome linocuts. The pair run a foraged food business in North Wales, which helps give a personal flavour to this celebration of all things rural

ANNI & JOSEF ALBERS: EQUAL AND UNEQUAL This biography celebrates the rich output of two creative masters, Anni and Josef Albers. From their formative years at the Bauhaus in Germany to their time teaching at Black Mountain College in the US, it explores the work of modernism’s foremost power couple, who reshaped the worlds of craft, art and design.

HANNAH RYGGEN: THREADS OF DEFIANCE The Swedish-Norwegian modern artist, who died in 1970, was best known for her monumental, politically charged tapestries, which reflected her feminist views, her communist sympathies and her opposition to fascism even before the Second World War. Marit Paasche’s detailed analysis explores the artist’s move from painting to textiles, her participation in the Venice Art Biennale in 1964, as well as her influ- ences and personal hard- ships, shining light on this often neglected practitioner.

SIMONE PHEULPIN This is a spectacular reference monograph about the artist who is turning 80 this year. We will admire Simone Pheulpin’s work at Maison Parisienne.

NORWEGIAN CRAFTS Norwegian Crafts’ aim is to strengthen the position of Norwegian contemporary crafts internationally. They have a large library of publications covering many crafts, techniques and materials.

BERNARD LEACH: LIFE AND WORK First published in 2003, Emmanuel Cooper’s classic biography of the man often dubbed ‘the father of British studio pottery’ has been republished in time for the centenary of the Leach Pottery, which Leach co-founded with the Japanese potter Shoji Hamada in St Ives. Coming in at over 400 dense pages, sprinkled liberally with footnotes, this is a deep dive into the man and the myth, exploring both his pioneering role and continuing legacy.
