When Did You Fall In Love With Florida?

I clearly remember the moment many years ago when I fell in love with Florida. I was 14 years old, exploring Pinellas County by an open-windowed car with my older cousins around 10 o’clock at night. At a stoplight, I happened to look up at

many places and things to love, and so different. So we set out looking for the different.

What we found is a place you might call a “hidden treasure” of Lee County, historic and charming Boca Grande. Then, we discovered that perhaps to your surprise, Southwest Florida is fast becoming one of the nation’s top hotbeds for ice — youth hockey — with two of the top ranked youth teams in the country here. And then, here comes this local artist who’s uncovered a whole new form of art, by painting with both sides of the paint. Yes, both sides.

an illuminated bank sign, where it reported the temperature at 84 degrees. Game. Set. Match. For a boy from Wisconsin who never liked cold, the warmth was intoxicating and I knew in my heart I’d someday live here.

I’m sure many of you have similar epiphany stories. Moments that are forever etched in your mind, your heart and your soul. With Valentine’s Day approaching, the subject of loving Florida — specifically Southwest Florida — is on our minds here at COASTE. There are so

He works on numerous paintings of various sizes simultaneously, and often glues 50 to 100 different “pulls” of paint together to create the final work of art.

It took about a month of experimenting for Pennisi to figure it out. Put simply, he creates his paintings by applying paint to plastic film, works the paints with random items like squeegees, metal strips and cans of air. The paint dries for 24 hours, then the piece is glued to canvas and after waiting

The results are stunning works of art that are abstract, dramatic, powerful and altogether novel in both approach and outcome. “Why are things in nature so beautiful? Pennisi spent the better part of 2015 preparing for his solo exhibit this January, and anticipates his works to sell for $1,500 to $9,000. “I’m very excited at the opportunity,” he says. “I’ve been at other shows, but always with other artists. This is very gratifying and I’ll be able to show a cohesive body of work.” Now 60 years old and with a six-year-old daughter, Steve Pennisi moved his family to the Fort Myers area to be closer to other family members here and in Orlando — and in the process found a whole new life through his work. “This is one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done. To pursue my dream, and then to discover this technique — it’s given me my map for the rest of my life. When I’m in the studio I feel as young as I’ve ever been.”

“The Arts Unify Us Positively.” By John Sprecher | PhotographyJerry Smith

TAKE FIVE

Eric Raddatz may be Southwest Florida’s most beloved impresario. He’s also one of the hardest working dudes around. His day job is Presentation Editor at Florida Weekly, a highly successful newspaper serving six markets across south Florida, where he’s responsible for everything from front page composition to the overall graphic design of the publication. He’s good at it too, having won numerous awards for his work. But Eric Raddatz is also all about film, film and more film. He’s founder and host of T.G.I.M. (Thank God for Indie Mondays), a monthly event held at the Sydney & Berne Davis Art Center that features short indies and lively debate, mixed in with a dash of music and fun. Plus he’s founder and executive director of the Fort Myers Film Festival, three days that bring upwards of 70 indie films to six venues across Southwest Florida (and winner of a Chrysalis Award for local tourism impact). This year’s Festival is April 7-10. Each issue, “Take Five” poses five questions to a community personality that have not previously been shared. Here, Eric Raddatz dishes on the art scene in Southwest Florida and why he’s so passionate about moving our arts needle forward.

COASTE | TAKE FIVE

1 What feeds your passion for the arts? I feel like the arts are a healing of sorts, and my gratification comes from the introduction and satisfaction we bring to people. The arts unify us in ways that bring us together positively, and by having a culture that understands the importance of the arts, you’re going to have a more caring community, a more intelligent community, one sensitive to all people. 2 3 If someone hasn’t attended T.G.I.M., what should they expect? An embracing of short independent films they can’t find anywhere else, with a focus on local films, and then a discussion that raises an intellectualism of the value of film on various levels, with a crowd that’s intensely wonderful and often involved in the creative arts community. Or in other words, short indie films, fun and wonderful people. Talk about your baby, the Fort Myers Film Festival. I look at the major national film festivals and where they were at when they were six years old. We’re a smaller film festival, but our programming is on par with any in the United States. The filmmakers that come here are from around the world, and many of them comment that this is one of if not their favorite festival because they love the programming, the people, the weather and the venues. The quality of the films we’re playing, Fort Myers is ahead of the curve, not behind it. I’m very happy with my baby. What’s the state of the creative arts community here? There are silver linings that just about any day of the week, you can go to a play, a performance, a concert in our area — it’s out there, just a little harder to find or a longer drive. We’re seeing it grow, and there are a lot of talented artists in our market, but we have a ways to go to really be vibrant and vital. What’s your long term plan for taking over the world? The Beatles said: “All you need is love.” While it may be a cliché answer, the kind of love that goes into what I’m doing is I believe contagious, and the best way to take over the world is with kindness and love. If I make a small contribution to help others appreciate the arts and they gain from that, that’s a pretty good way to take over the world. 4 5

Forget the beaches — it’s youth hockey that’s all the rage in Southwest Florida, and quickly becoming the talk of the country.

It’s another beautiful January Saturday in Southwest Florida. The sun is shining. The skies are clear blue. It’s maybe 75 degrees. Yet while most visitors would be heading for the beaches, more than a hundred families — some from as far away as Chicago and Dallas — are instead huddled inside the chilly “blue” and “green” rinks of Germain Arena in Estero, sitting on cold concrete bleachers, cheering on their kids as they participate in the first of a three-day youth hockey tournament. But the fact is, youth hockey in Southwest Florida is white hot — so hot that one team was ranked number one in the U.S. for more than two years, three teams are currently ranked in the top 20, and hockey moms, dads and organizers around the country have taken notice. While there are rec leagues and just-for-fun programs for kids, the youth hockey we’re talking about takes the sport — and the teaching of it —

seriously. These programs include Florida Junior Everblades AA hockey and Florida Alliance AAA hockey. Founded in 1998, the Junior Everblades is (this season) comprised of 10 teams and approximately 150 players, ranging in age from five to 16 years old, and teams compete with others throughout Florida. The Florida Alliance, formed in 2012, fields the top players from around the state (via tryouts) and travels to major tournaments across America and even to Canada. Originally from Toronto, Jim Brown is a former Florida Everblade who’s in his first year as hockey director for the Junior Everblades. “I would never have imagined my son learning to play hockey in Florida,” he laughs. “However, we’ve had so many ex-pro hockey players move here and get involved here that our coaching is outstanding, our kids are learning and the success of our teams is getting recognition around the country.”

Certainly the most prominent name among these former professionals is Brian Rafalski, who moved his family to Southwest Florida in 2011 following his retirement from the Detroit Red Wings. With a resume that includes three Stanley Cup titles, three Olympic appearances for the United States and two NHL All Star nominations, Rafalski has been instrumental in growing Southwest Florida

two teams of 11-year-olds who shine brightest in the spotlight. The “Elite” squad was ranked number one in the country for over two years (at this writing, ranked number three) and the second “AAA” squad is ranked among the top 20. “It’s pretty unique to have two teams ranked as highly as we have,” says Ryan Brindley, another former Everblade and key contributor to

hockey the last few years — by coaching, collaborating with other coaches and helping establish the Florida Alliance. “Travel hockey’s purpose is to develop the elite players and give them opportunities to compete against the best players

across the U.S. and in Canada,” he explains. “We want to bring out their best individually, while teaching them to work within the team concept. Those are skills that are very important in any profession and in life. And hopefully, we can put them in a position to earn a college scholarship.” Although only four years old, Florida Alliance AAA already features nine teams of boys (and occasionally girls) ages nine to 14 — but it’s the

coaching youth hockey since his undergraduate years at Miami University of Ohio. With the Florida Alliance, the goal is “to have kids become the best people they can be, on and off the ice. If they have the passion and the work ethic, we’ll push them in skill development as well as life lessons.”

In fact, Southwest Florida hockey is now so well respected that parents from all over the state

are bringing their boys and girls here. Michael Cunningham is one such parent who literally goes to this extreme, traveling from his home in the Keys to Germain Arena for his daughter Ainsley (former Junior Everblade) and son Eagan (current Alliance). “I’m fortunate to have a job where I’m able to do my work anywhere,” he notes. “One

While a number of fundraising events are planned, Rafalski is hoping that Southwest Florida businesses will see the value of their efforts — and the national recognition it’s bringing — and support their mission with sponsorships. “Our goal is to create a year-round program where kids can train together, work on skill sets they may not be able to otherwise and, with travel, have a chance to go up against the top players in the country,” he says. “Any improvement within the hockey frame will always help kids in life.” Ryan Brindley agrees. “In the end, we’re just trying to do what’s best for the kids. And now that we’re getting recognized nationally, well, that’s pretty satisfying.” Florida AAA Youth Hockey www.FloridaAAAYouthHockey.org Junior Everblades www.JrEverblades.org { }

knowledge coaches are communicating to my daughter and son are invaluable. It’s teaching them life lessons and developing their skills.” As Cunningham and other parents can attest, tournament hockey like Florida Alliance ain’t cheap — anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 per year when you add it all up. About a year ago, Rafalski, Brindley and others began discussing ways tomake the Alliance better for kids, and more affordable for parents. The result is the new, not-for-profit Florida AAA Youth Hockey, Inc., complete with 501(c)(3) papers from the IRS, that will debut in August as a year-round program.

Tucked away at the southern tip of Gasparilla Island, at the northernmost point of Lee County, charming Boca Grande awaits your discovery. By John Sprecher | Photography Milissa Sprecher + Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau TREASUR

Among the upper islands that dot Lee County’s spectacular Gulf of Mexico frontage, you’ll more often hear the names North Captiva, Cayo Costa, Cabbage Key and Useppa. But there’s another almost forgotten jewel to be admired, separated from Lee County by land, water and in some ways, time itself.

to be missed. If you have access to a boat, it’s a spectacular outing just north of Cabbage Key across Boca Grande Pass, where eventually you’ll encounter the iconic Gasparilla Island Lighthouse before docking. If by vehicle, well, the trip is a little more laborious and not as visually spectacular, but easy to navigate. This writer and his family have had the occasion to travel to Boca Grande by both means — and one sunny December day, we found the destination as quiet, slow paced and delightful as we had our first visit two years ago.

As word of this fishing frenzy spread, wealthy families from the north began to move in. Then in the early 1900s, phosphate was discovered — valuable for fertilizer and many other products — and shortly thereafter, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began work on a railroad station and

railway that would make transport to Port Boca Grande (and then to ocean- bound freighters) fast and easy. Today, many of these local fishing families are now third- or even f ou r t h - gene r a t i on residents, who share

As for the railroad station, it’s now a centerpiece of unique shops, boutiques and restaurants — while the railway has been converted to a bike and golf cart path, two of the best ways to explore. An area highlight each year is what’s called “The World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament.” Founded in 1991 and held this year May 19-20, fishermen pay to play (entry fee $5,000) and vie for $80,000 in prizes.
