Hospitality in Indiana

The Hospitality industry is a key driver of economic growth in Indiana, as the Circle City attracts major national conventions and critical regional markets of leisure travelers. In fact, the sector experienced peak employment in February 2019 at 111,604 jobs. The city we call home also serves a significant population of enthusiastic residents who enjoy our dynamic local dining and brew pub scene. Indy’s local chefs often receive nominations as finalists for the James Beard awards. The Covid-19 pandemic brought immediate and lasting consequences to the industry, which saw the deferral or loss of more than 50,000 hospitality workers. Even after some recovery since the lowest point of 2020, nearly a decade of employment growth has been lost, with current employment numbers equivalent to those of November 2011. Projections for 2022 remain difficult, but recovery will rely on a combination of visitor and residential activity. Because a full recovery of group bookings is not expected until 2025, we are placing much more emphasis on residents driving the hospitality market in the short term. Local hotels and restaurants are challenged every day with finding a trained cadre of waiters, chefs and line cooks, front desk personnel and housekeepers, etc. This workforce engine needs a “restart” to supply trained workers needed so desperately in the Hospitality industry. Ivy Tech Indianapolis and Visit Indy, the destination marketing arm of our city, have partnered on a series of initiatives over a number of years to connect and inspire the next generation of hospitality employees seeking meaningful careers.

Ivy Tech Hospitality A dministration

The Culinary/Hospitality curricula at the Ivy Tech Indianapolis campus provides foundational training to supply the local hospitality employee pipeline. The program was established at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis in 1983 as the only source of culinary and beverage management education in Indiana, and is modeled after the best practices and principles of some of the most well- known hospitality colleges in America. While our program remains significantly more affordable than other Culinary Schools in the region, we offer the same hands on learning and are nationally accredited by the American Culinary Federation Accrediting Commission. The hospitality industry is the largest private sector employer in the United States, and students in the Hospitality Administration program

receive hands-on training in world class facilities which mirror the professional industry. Students thrive in engaging labs (now including a food truck) and experiential learning, including development of customer service skills. It enhances cultural development with courses, certifications, and degree options in: Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts, and Hospitality Management with areas of emphasis in Restaurant Management, Hotel Management, Event Management, and Beverage Management.
