WE DON’T KNOW HOW YOU DO IT, MOMS But We’re Glad You Do
I n a word, moms of all kinds are tough. Even if you’re not someone who spends a lot of time out in the wilderness, you probably know intuitively to never get in between any kind of animal mother and her babies. And when it comes to human moms, that protective dedication is just as present. With Mother’s Day coming up here pretty soon, let’s make sure we remember our moms and celebrate them for everything they do. My mom passed away three years ago, but I still take Mother’s Day as an opportunity to remember all the ways she loved and supported me throughout the years. I grew up in the 1960s, when a mother’s role looked a little different than it does today. Most of my friends’ moms during that time didn’t work; they spent their days taking care of the homestead. When my friends came home from school, they found dinner waiting for them on the table. Even though that picture of motherhood isn’t as common today as it was then, you could still see how mothers were the foundation of the family. It seemed like they held everything together.
Unlike my friends’ moms, my mother did work. She and my father often operated as a management team for their businesses. And yet, my mom never let that stop her from making sure my brother and I were taken care of. I don’t know how she did it, but despite her involvement with the family business, dinner was still on the table every day when my brother and I would arrive home from school.
My wife was the same way when my son was growing up. She worked full time and also somehow found a way to always help our son with his homework, get to all his sporting events, get his uniforms pressed, bring snacks for the rest of the team, and shuttle around some of the other parents’ kids on top of that. I have no idea how she had the energy for it, and how moms with more than one kid balance their lives is an utter mystery to me. Moms just get things done, and I can’t always surmise how. But I’m glad they do. Without moms, none of us would be where we are today — or be here at all, for that matter. About 75% of the people who come into Cool Renew Med Spa are women, many of them wives and mothers. However we can, we want to help all the ladies who come into our clinic to be the best versions of themselves. They deserve nothing less.
It wasn’t just in the day-to-day things where mom really shined, though. Back when we couldn’t just buy Halloween costumes from the store and had to make them ourselves, you better believe she made sure my brother and I had costumes ready to go. The same went for Valentine’s Day, when we had to decorate shoeboxes for collecting valentines from our classmates. Whenever we had any sort of project, it seemed like mom was there to magically whip something up for us. “Moms just get things done, and I can’t always surmise how. But I’m glad they do. Without moms, none of us would be where we are today — or be here at all, for that matter.”
To all the mothers reading this, happy Mother’s Day! We hope it’s a good one.

Has Breakfast in Bed Gone Out of Style? WHAT MOMS REALLY WANT ON MOTHER’S DAY
Serving breakfast in bed to moms, especially on Mother’s Day, has been a widespread tradition for years, but have you ever wondered if it’s what your mom really wants? Here’s a look at the Mother’s Day breakfast in bed tradition and some recent insight into the popular trend. According to Heather Arndt Anderson, author of “Breakfast: A History,” the popularity of breakfast in bed became widespread during the Victorian era, but only for married, wealthy women who had servants. Those women
holiday by running ads in magazines and newspapers encouraging children and fathers to serve their matriarchs breakfast in bed. Since then, serving mothers breakfast in bed has become a popular Mother’s Day ritual around the world, and it remains so today. However, there is one group whose voice has been left out of the breakfast in bed conversation: mothers. In a recent study conducted by Zagat, a well-known dining survey site, researchers found that only 4% of moms polled want breakfast in bed. Yes, you read that right. When you factor in the mess of syrup, crumbs, and coffee spilling over clean sheets, it’s understandable. Today’s mothers usually don’t have servants to clean up afterward. The study also revealed what most moms prefer to do for breakfast on Mother’s Day: 53% of mothers like to go out, and 39% prefer brunch instead of breakfast. While breakfast in bed seems like a nice gesture, statistics show that it’s probably the last thing your mom wants to wake up to on May 10. This Mother’s Day, show your appreciation for your mom or the mother of your children by asking her what she would like to do. She deserves the holiday morning she desires, whether that includes a full breakfast in bed or a trip to her favorite brunch joint.
would enjoy their first meal of the day in bed, and then their servants would handle all the spilled scone crumbs and messy breakfast residue.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson dubbed Mother’s Day a national U.S. holiday, and a few years later, the aristocratic English tradition of breakfast in bed sailed across the pond to America. By the 1930s, food and bedding companies capitalized on the tradition and the new
3 REASONS WHY THE BEST TIME TO COOLSCULPT IS NOW
Summer bodies are forged before warm weather ever arrives, and even though summer is almost here, many of you may still be trying to shake that pesky fat that didn’t disappear with a healthy diet and regular exercise. If that’s the case, don’t worry — now is still one of the best times to schedule your CoolSculpting appointment. Here are a few reasons not to wait. YOUR RESULTS WILL TAKE TIME. As is the case with trying to lose weight with diet and exercise, it takes time for the results of your CoolSculpting treatment to really show up — usually around 5–8 weeks. Since the results aren’t immediate, you shouldn’t wait until summer is already here to make sure your body is bikini ready. For the quickest results, schedule your CoolSculpting appointment as soon as you can! YOU WILL PROBABLY NEED MORE THAN ONE TREATMENT. As revolutionary as CoolSculpting is, it’s not usually a one-and-done type of process. Most patients have to come back in for multiple treatments over the course of several weeks. Just like with your diet and exercise, you have
to be diligent about your appointments if you want the summer body of your dreams.
IT’S NOT A HUGE TIME COMMITMENT. While coming to your
appointments is certainly important, it should be noted that the time commitment on your part will be minimal. Appointments usually only take an hour at most. While you undergo treatment, all you have to do is kick back, relax, and even watch Netflix if you want, all while that stubborn fat just melts away. If you haven’t already started the CoolSculpting Process, we’ve got some exciting news for you! A POWERFUL SYMBOL OF FEMININE SELF-ESTEEM The History of Red Lipstick
Perhaps no beauty trend has been more ubiquitous and long lasting than red lipstick. For as simple as it seems, red lipstick, as a part of greater ensembles, still turned heads at the last New York Fashion Week according to global media company Refinery29. And while you might be wearing red lipstick for elegance or glamour, this beauty trend that’s been making lips pop for centuries has a longer history than you might imagine. Even in the ancient world, red lipstick was both a way to accentuate beauty and declare status. While the ancient Egyptians wore it to show that they were a part of high society, the sector of society it represented in ancient Greece was less reputable, to say the least. During the Middle Ages, wearing red lipstick was downright heretical. But as time went on, that began to change. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the women’s suffrage movement was picking up steam, Elizabeth Arden, a cosmetics brand founder and women’s suffrage supporter, began handing out red lipstick at women’s rights marches. The bold color shocked men and eventually became
synonymous with women’s rights around the world. For the first 20–30 years that red lipstick was prominent in the United States, Americans were deeply divided over whether it was scandalous or empowering. That all changed when WWII began. Adolf Hitler famously hated red lipstick, and so through an act of defiance against Nazi Germany, wearing red lipstick became not only acceptable but patriotic. While the men were away at war, millions of women donned red lipstick as they entered the workforce. That’s why Rosie the Riveter, the cultural icon of working women during WWII, has red lips. Beauty brands began capitalizing on the new perception of red lipstick, creating colors such as “victory red” or “regimental red,” and red lipstick became mandatory for women who joined the U.S. Army. Today, red lipstick remains a power symbol of feminine self- esteem and a great-looking beauty trend to boot. Now, next time you plan to color your lips your favorite shade of red, you can remember all that red lipstick represents.
