SOMETHING TO BE THANKFUL FOR THIS YEAR One Patient ’s Story With the MedSpa

We at Cool Renew MedSpa have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season. Speaking for myself, I’m thankful for my family, our incredible staff at the MedSpa, and the amazing people of the Erie community who trust us to help them look and feel better. We receive thank-you notes and cards from patients expressing their appreciation for our team, and we couldn’t be more humbled to have such a profound effect on our patients’ lives. That it’s our job to change people’s lives for the better is incredibly humbling.

One thank-you note we received recently hit us especially hard. It was from a woman named Mary (we aren’t using the woman’s real name out of respect for her privacy). Mary, by all accounts, had a great life. She was in her mid- 40s and had three kids. However, she grappled with one crippling problem on a daily basis — incontinence. Mary struggled with frequent urination. Some days she would use the bathroom, then go and pick up one of her kids from a sports practice 15 minutes away, and by the time she got there, she would already have to go again. Mary’s problem left her incredibly frustrated. She had no idea how to stop her frequent urination, or if it was even possible. That’s where one of the latest treatments at Cool Renew MedSpa, known as Emsella, comes into the story. In short, Emsella is a breakthrough technology, approved by the FDA, that helps heal incontinence for both men and women in a completely noninvasive way. All other forms of treating incontinence are invasive in some way. Mary was one of the first of our patients to go through this treatment, and after six sessions, Emsella changed her life. Today, Mary is back on a normal daily schedule. She no longer has to keep an eye out for every gas station, restaurant, and

public restroom in case she needs to pull over and rush inside. Because of the treatment she received at Cool Renew MedSpa, she took her life back. In the midst of what’s been an otherwise chaotic and uncertain year, stories like Mary’s give all of us reason to be thankful during the Thanksgiving season. In our own little corner of the world, we’re still able to use the tools and expertise we have at the MedSpa to improve people’s lives. So, while things could certainly be better, I’m grateful for what we can do. Do you suffer from incontinence or frequent urination? Are you interested in what Emsella and Cool Renew MedSpa can do to help you get back to a normal life? If you answered yes to either one or both of these questions, then read more about Emsella, how this treatment works, what it can do for you, and our special offer for the month of November on Page 2 of this newsletter.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Top 5 Healthy Life Hacks to Have an Awesome Morning

PACK YOUR LUNCH (OR SNACKS!). Staying on track with your goals starts with having the energy to do them. Plan a healthy balance of fats, vegetables, carbohydrates, and proteins. This can be as simple as assembling dips, carrots, wraps, and salads each morning.

Getting your day started with coffee isn’t always enough. Sometimes, you need to give yourself an extra boost, especially when you have little energy or trouble focusing. For an awesome start to your day, here are five tips to get you going right off the bat. WAKE UP 5 MINUTES EARLY. What’s the power of five minutes? It can be more than you think. Spend this time doing simple breathing exercises or a quick meditation so you can get focused for the rest of the day. If that’s not your style, you can prepare a quick to-do list for your day ahead. Either way, it’s always nice to have a little extra time for yourself without losing too much sleep. START WITH GREEN TEA, THEN COFFEE. A cup of coffee at 7 a.m. can leave you burned out by 10 a.m. Try swapping it with green tea for a more gentle wake-up call. After that, you can brew your favorite coffee to keep you

going strong. This practice also might help you consume less caffeine overall!

TAKE A QUICK MORNING WALK — AND HAVE YOUR MEETINGS ON THE GO. Morning meetings can make us want to fall asleep again. Don’t spend all of them sitting down if you don’t have to! Not only will morning

It’s time to try these tactics to jump-start your day!

walks help you wake up, but they can also add some extra physical activity to your day. WRITE IN YOUR JOURNAL. Who says you have to journal at the end of the day when you’re tired and ready to sleep? You can journal in the morning about what happened yesterday and the things you’re looking forward to that day. Journaling can remind you of your daily goals and motivate you to stick to your commitments.

Struggling with incontinence can be both inconvenient and embarrassing. Nobody wants to have to use a bathroom every 15 minutes and plan their day-to-day schedule around it. Unfortunately, most procedures meant to help with incontinence can be invasive and uncomfortable. That’s what makes Emsella so revolutionary. Emsella is a completely noninvasive method for getting rid of incontinence. Before diving into how Emsella can accomplish this, it’s important to know what causes incontinence. Your pelvic organs are supported by a layer of pelvic muscles resting on top of your pelvis. These muscles, when strong, are what help you control your bladder. However, when these muscles are weak, they aren’t supporting your pelvic organs, making it hard to control your bladder. Because incontinence is ultimately a problem of weak muscle groups, Emsella works to cure incontinence much like EmSculpt works to strengthen your abs and glutes. It uses electromagnetic energy to cause thousands of pelvic floor muscle contractions, which re-educates those muscle groups on how to control the bladder, healing that person of their incontinence. To date, five studies have shown the effectiveness of Emsella, and almost every patient in those studies has reported a higher quality of life, while 3 out of every 4 patients reported using fewer pads. Most patients see results from the treatments within a few weeks of the first treatment session, but a few patients have even shown positive effects after just one treatment. During the month of November, Cool Renew MedSpa has a special offer for anyone struggling with incontinence and believes Emsella is the best option for them. If you schedule your appointment this month, we’ll take $300 off the normal price. With Emsella, you’ll be able to do more than cure your incontinence — you’ll get your life back.

HOW TO LOOK GOOD ON YOUR NEXT ZOOM CALL

(At Least From the Waist Up)

If you’re one of the millions of workers who traded their office or cubicle for the kitchen table, guest bedroom, or home office, chances are you have to hop on a lot of video meetings. This new interfacing dynamic might keep you safe and connected with coworkers, but when it comes to looking your best, it presents a whole new set of challenges. Fortunately, you can practice a few simple tricks to look great, even from the comfort of your own home. LIGHT UP YOUR FACE. If you want to look your best on camera, start by making sure your coworkers can see you! If you’re constantly backlit, you’ll look like a silhouette. Facing the best light source in your workspace while on camera gives your coworkers the best look at you. If you’re worried about what the light might reveal, brightening eye cream can help you look more alert, under-eye patches or eye masks can help you get rid of bags, and even just a little moisturizer can go a long way in brightening up your face to match the light. GET THE CAMERA ANGLE RIGHT. Always have your camera at eye level. If your camera is too low, your coworkers will see up your nostrils, and you’ll just look plain unflattering. (Fun fact: A low camera angle is how the director of the 1931 movie “Frankenstein” got the monster to look more menacing.) If necessary, stack some books underneath your monitor so, even though you’re looking at a screen, you’ll still look like you’re meeting your coworkers’ eyes.

AVOID DISTRACTING CLOTHES AND BACKGROUNDS. When it comes to your clothes, avoid busy plaid and/or patterned shirts; they can numb your viewers’ eyes. Opt instead for a plain-colored shirt, which will accentuate your face. You can apply similar principles to your background. Having a bookshelf with lots of trinkets on it behind you can draw viewers’ attention away from you. Opt instead for a “boring” background, like a plain wall with maybe a simple piece of art on it. While these tips certainly aren’t new, they’re good for anyone working from home to keep in mind. Just because you’re wearing your comfy pants doesn’t mean you can’t look your best from the waist up.

What Makes Spinach a Superfood?

Why Is Spinach so Good for You?

POTENT PROTECTION AGAINST DISEASE The abundant antioxidants in spinach mitigate a staggering number of health problems. For starters, spinach has kaempferol, an antioxidant that can protect the body against cancer. Additionally, the antioxidant quercetin, also found in spinach, has been shown to have positive effects on brain health, heart disease, and Type 2 diabetes. Other components of spinach can also improve blood pressure and protect eye health. VERSATILE IN MEAL PREPARATION Aside from the more scientific reasons that make spinach a superfood, you can prepare and consume spinach in so many creative ways. You can eat it raw as a part of a salad, throw a few leaves in a smoothie, cook it in stir fry, or bake it into some brownies. If you have a bag of spinach in your fridge, there’s no shortage of ways you can get some of those amazing health benefits. Just don’t expect to suddenly vanquish all your foes like Popeye did.

If the reason you know spinach is good for you is because either your mother told you, or you saw Popeye the Sailor down a can before a fight and gain superhuman strength, you might not understand exactly why it’s so good for you. Rest assured, your mom wasn’t lying (although Popeye might have been stretching the truth). Spinach is actually one of the most nutritious and versatile foods you can add to your diet. Here’s why. INCREDIBLE NUTRIENT-PER-CALORIE COUNT Three cups of spinach contain about 20 calories. However, those 3 cups also contain almost no fat, 2 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbs, and 2 grams of fiber. On top of that, you get more than 300% of your daily dose of vitamin K, which supports bone growth; 160% of your daily dose of vitamin A; and around 25%–40% of your daily dose of vitamin C, both of which help the immune system function properly.
