As students celebrate spring break, prom and graduation during the next few months, Mothers Against Drunk Driving ® (MADD) and National Presenting Sponsor Nationwide ® are equipping parents with the resources they need to talk with their teens about the risks of underage drinking and drug use. MADD ’ s Power of Parents ® program encourages parents to talk to their teens about alcohol and other drugs. Research shows 74 percent of teens say their parents are the biggest influence on their decisions related to drinking. Parents should start talking as early as 8 years of age, and continue talking often. When students understand the dangers of underage drinking and use of other drugs, they are more motivated to engage in health-promoting behaviors and avoid unhealthy behaviors, like underage drinking and drug. -continued on page 2 Keep Talking: MADD's Power of Parents

“ Marijuana is safer than alcohol. ” Both are drugs and are associated with serious problems especially if used by those under the age of 21 while the brain and body are still in a rapid period of development. “ Marijuana makes me a better driver. ” It is not safer to drive after marijuana consumption. Studies have shown that, of seriously injured drivers admitted to trauma centers, more than 1 out of 4 tested positive for marijuana. In another study of fatally injured drivers, more than 1 in 10 tested positive for marijuana. “ You cannot get addicted to marijuana. ” Marijuana is currently the leading cause of substance dependence other than alcohol in the United States. Studies show that marijuana accounts for over 50 percent of the 7 million people age 12 or older who are dependent on or abusing a drug.

As part of Power of Parents, ® MADD has designated March 1 through May 31 as PowerTalk21, ® the critical time during Spring when several milestone events occur that could increase the presence of alcohol for young adults and teens under 21. “ Spring break, prom, graduation and other big events that happen at this time of year create memories that last a lifetime. We want to make sure the future leaders of our country enjoy their youth, free of the devastating impacts that underage drinking and drug use can bring, ” said Lori Burke, Executive Director. “ MADD wants to ensure that parents have all the right tools needed to have the important conversations that will keep their kids safe. ” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), excessive drinking is responsible for more than 4,300 deaths among underage youth each year and can lead to early addiction as well as many other dangerous outcomes. In addition, marijuana is the leading cause of substance dependence other than alcohol in the United States. This year, MADD is expanding its reach by encouraging parents to use the tools included in Power of Parents to not only talk to their kids about alcohol, but other drugs as well, including marijuana. What does this mean to MADD SWFL? This means that committed volunteers are challenging to find and keep. Until someone is impacted by a drunk or drugged driver, MADD's mission is too serious and sad. Often times, the average citizen also perceives drunk driving as a mistake rather than a crime. This makes MADD volunteers invaluable and worth more than $24.04 per hour. To show our gratitude, we have regular social events for our volunteers as well as flexible duties, hours and levels of commitment. As a result, MADD in Southwest Florida has some of the best volunteers of any nonprofit.

Volunteers have long been the backbone for nonprofits. Many nonprofits, MADD included, do not have the funds to staff to capacity in order to affect our mission to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support victims and prevent underage drinking. $24.04 HOURLY MONETARY VALUE OF A FLORIDA VOLUNTEER. ACCORD I NG TO I NDE P ENDENT S ECTOR . ORG The lack of staffing capacity leads to swimming against the current. No matter how hard MADD staff tries, the task is too great; there is not enough time in the day and there is still items on our 'to do' list. This is where volunteers save the day and are true Super Heroes for safe and sober streets in our community. In 2016, a VolunteerFlorida study concluded that 52% of

Floridians said they volunteer for their church, a nonprofit organization or informally in their neighborhood. Further the study shows that volunteers are most likely to help a stranger or neighbor; donate money, assets or property with a value of $25 or more; and collect, make, or donate clothing, crafts or goods. The study also found that Floridians donate their time when they have a connection to the organization's mission or the mission makes them happy.
