GOLF
2018 Northern Virginia Retired Men’s Golf Association (NVRMGA)
5 8 t h a n n u a l Member Guest golf tournament
Don’t miss out on a great experience of playing local country club courses. If you are 55 or older, you can become a member of the NVRMGA and do just that! ANCC will field two separate teams, one at Arlington and one at Fairfax. Both teams are always looking for new players. The ANCC Arlington team was the league champion in 2010 and 2015 and the ANCC Arlington and Fairfax teams were co-champions in 2011. In 2017, the ARL team was again crowned League Champion! And the FFX team finished in a tie for sixth place. Both teams are looking forward to successful seasons in 2018. The 2018 ANCC teams will be put together within the next few months, so there is still plenty of time for you to sign up. HOW? Just sign up here before 31 January 2018 for the ARL Team and here by 1 March 2018 for the FFX Team or by visiting the NVRMGA page under Golf Organizations. Even if you were a NVRMGA player last year, it is required you sign-up again this year. A contact list will be posted on the golf bulletin board in each ANCC pro shop whereby eligible ANCC golfers not currently part of a team, but wishing to join us in 2018, can express interest. How does NVRMGA work? New in 2018, the League will be organized into 3 regions - Eastern, Central and Western with ARL in the Eastern and FFX in the Central. We will play each of 10 opposing teams twice, once at home and once away between early April and late September. The League Champion will be determined by a four-team playoff (three region champions and one wildcard team) during the first two weeks of October. Play is on Thursdays, teeing off at 8:45 AM. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in at least 6 matches and have the opportunity to volunteer as a substitute for matches to which you are not assigned. A schedule will be available in early February for ARL and early March for FFX indicating which matches you have been assigned. These are handicap matches - no need to worry about your current handicap index. If you would like more information for ARL , please contact Mike Downs (703) 317-1822 [email protected] Nick Fritz (703) 553-4435 [email protected] Jim Schroeder (703) 237-1939 [email protected] For FFX information, please contact Verne Wattawa (703) 433-9279 [email protected] Rich Barkell (703) 442-0932 [email protected] Mike Golembieski (703) 643-1444 [email protected] Please sign-up as soon as possible!

The Senior Men’s Golf Organization (SMGO) invites all ANCC members age 55 and over to participate in our men’s senior golf program in 2018. This is organized play that develops new friendships and enhances your enjoyment of the game of golf and Club facilities. The SMGO program features an ABCD scramble at 8:30 AM on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the ARL course commencing in April through October. Other tournaments may be scheduled when play dates are available. All ANCC members are welcome regardless of their handicap. If you were a member in 2017, your membership will be renewed. Sign-ups for new SMGO members will be posted in the ARL Golf Shop by December 1, 2017. If you do not want to participate in 2018, please indicate your decision to be deleted on the sign-up sheet or you may contact Peter Junghans at [email protected] or (703) 836-7966. New members who may be leaving the area for the winter are encouraged to sign-up prior to departing. The 2018 dues will be set prior to the opening of the season. A $10 entry fee is collected at each event for the prize pool, a dues augmentation and for the cost of coffee and pastries available at each ABCD Scramble check-in.

Winter Golf Course Set Up
WGO-18 WOMEN’S 18- HOLE GOLF ORGANIZATION
As part of our ongoing effort to improve the quality and consistency of our golf course playing conditions, the Golf & Green Committee approved the following action at the business meeting on 8 November 2011. Winter play course set up at ANCC will commence on or about 1 December and remain in effect until approximately 1 March each eason. During this time only two sets of tee markers will be placed on each hole – one forward and one back. In many cases artificial mats will be placed on the teeing ground. When this option is utilized, all players should play from the mat and refrain from use of the grass teeing ground. We believe that this course of action will minimize winter damage, promote faster spring recovery and provide superior playing conditions during the golf season, March through October.
December is a month of no organized events for WGO-18. Winter Golf is available to those who choose to participate - see below for description and rules. This can also be viewed online under WGO-18 Booklet here . Winter Golf: The goal is to improve your ten gross 9-hole scores, played from the RED tees. Winter Golf began November 1, ends March 31 and has a $5 fee which will be billed to your account. Once you post your first score, you will be registered in the tournament. Each time you play an authorized round (with another player - doesn’t have to be a member of WGO-18), enter your score on the Winter Golf Tournament Sheet on the WGO-18 bulletin board at only one club. You may play at either campus – Arlington or Fairfax – but post on only one sheet. You may not post a winter golf score if you are not allowed to post a regular score. Every stroke must be counted, do not pick up if or when you reach your maximum ECS, putt out (conceded putts not allowed), post your actual score even though you will use your ESC score to post for handicap purposes. You may improve your posted scores by erasing the previous score and posting the new lower gross score. You must post a minimum of ten 9-hole rounds. Winners will be determined by their gross scores, less handicap strokes, at the end of the winter golf season. New members are welcome at any time during the year. Contact Debbie Dawson, [email protected] , for more details or click here to view the WGO-18 website.
The Committee thanks you for your support.

CWGO CAREER WOMEN’S GOLF ORGANIZATION
The Career Women’s Golf Organization wrapped up its 25th season with its end-of-the-year dinner and business meeting on November 8. The group also recognized two golfers who made stellar improvements to their games during the 2017 season. E.R. Anderson was the most improved golfer for the half of the group with lower handicaps, and Barbara Lancaster was most improved in the higher handicap category. Also during the meeting three board members were unanimously elected: Leah Little, Vice President; Cheryl Watson, Events co-chair, and Shara Fordyce, Secretary. In addition, Ruth Seyler was formally elected to fill the unexpired term of a previous Events co-chair. The group recognized outgoing board members for their exemplary service: Laurie Bravo as President, Joanne Waters as Secretary and Lisa Croteau as Events chair. In other news, our ANCC team won the Interclub trophy for a third straight year with a win over Hidden Creek in the championship match on October 15. On August 4, 1958 ANCC procured 233 acres in Fairfax that included an 18 hole golf course for $1,062,313.89. On August 27, 1958 the Board of Governors authorized the Executive Committee to negotiate for the purchase of additional real estate at Fairfax. Shortly thereafter, the Executive Committee engaged renown golf course architect George W. Cobb, whose designs included Quail Hollow (the site of this year’s PGA Championship), the par 3 course at Augusta National (with Bobby Jones) and the University of Maryland golf course, to investigate the feasibility of “increasing the golf facilities at the Fairfax course…” Cobb presented his report in October to joint meeting of the Golf & Green Committees (they were separate committees at that time).
