PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

PRESIDENT GaryW. Ferguson

VICE PRESIDENT Melissa Riegel

For those who didn't attend the Annual Election of Stockholders Meeting, I would like to share some of the highlights of reports. By any measure, 2019 has been a good year. Golf rounds are over 10% higher than the previous year, driven by the improved weather and the fantastic conditions of our courses. In fact, activity is up in all areas of our Club and your strong usage of the Club contributed to a dramatic improvement of the Club finances over the prior year. We are on target to generate the cash required to support the Tennis Improvement Project and while we will use a line of credit during construction, we expect to fully repay the short term loan by the end of 2021. Membership has remained stable but costs, primarily for wages and benefits, continues to rise in a very competitive labor market. The Board has approved a 3.8% increase in dues for 2020. Members are reminded that the best way to minimize future dues increases is to recruit new members to our Club.

A NOTE FROM PHIL

Holiday Greetings! It is hard to believe that it is time to break out the tree and all the trimmings. It seems like we just got the last bit of glitter out of the carpets from last Christmas but it is time to do it all again! BecauseThanksgiving was so late on this year’s calendar, there are fewer days to prepare and celebrate before the 25th. Did we use that as an excuse to cut anything out? Of course not! Things just get a little more hectic. There is a lot to share, so let’s get to it. Throughout the Holiday Season, casual and formal dining will be offered in all venues. The normal activity of regular membership dining always increases during this time of the year so it will be extremely important (and helpful) to make reservations for formal dining or for larger tables (five or more) planning to enjoy a casual meal in the Tavern/Grille. Notification of your planned visit will allow us to have a table waiting. Of course, if you are coming from another Holiday party and simply want to stop in, please do.We will always find a way to accommodate you.

The Holidays also play host to a multitude of special dining and social experiences for you to enjoy. The season gets started when on Monday, December 2nd, decorations go up. As soon as we are officially “in the spirit”, events begin. The very next day (December 3rd) we hold the Holiday Sip & Shop in Pub 37 and the Golf Shop. OnWednesday, we help you with your own decorating by holding the Magnolia Wreath making class. Friday is the Junior Jingle Ball & Teen event, followed by the Annual Bus Trip to NYC that leaves bright and early on Saturday morning. On Sunday the 8th, we have the Santa Party. This event was “reimagined” last year to become an evening affair.Your comments and attendance suggested that it was a keeper! Join us for a terrific evening creating family holiday memories with cookie decorating, ornament making and a visit from Santa. We’ll have a festive dinner buffet, lots of activities and plenty of time for pictures with Santa. On Tuesday evening the 10th, we will be holding a wonderful event where attendees will decorate a personal gingerbread house. This event is open to all ages and skill levels. We hope you will join us! The tradition of our Christmas Candlelight Dinners has continued for more than two decades! To maintain the proper feel of the evening, the event is limited to the formal dining room on three consecutive nights, the 17th, 18th and 19th. Although all three nights are already filled, we always get a few last minute cancellations, and try to fill those vacancies from the waiting list. If you have any flexibility in your schedule and would like to participate, we encourage you to add your name to the list. Chances are, you will get a call. Pub37 will also get into the holiday celebratory mix. And on the third Friday of December, that celebration gets a little “ugly”. On the 20th, our normal “Happy Hour” will encourage you to dig deep into your closet to break out that truly ugly holiday sweater and wear it with pride! It will even earn you a free beer (or wine)! The final event before Christmas is the Yuletide Holiday Brunch scheduled for Sunday the 22nd.This event has proven an excellent opportunity to gather as a family, join old friends or entertain guests during the Holidays. The Holiday season culminates with our NewYear’s Eve dinners. Just as we did last year, there will be an “early dinner” in the Tavern/Grille - complete with traditional favors and decorations - serving a special limited menu from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. (reservations accepted for all size tables). Café 1901 will also be open for families and our youngest revelers including a couple of rounds of family bingo. For those who wish to “dress up”, the Dining Room will feature the same limited menu as the Tavern/Grille, but in a more formal environment. Piano music will be provided by Jim Sullivan and some traditional New Year’s favors will add a special atmosphere to a special evening. Reservations are appreciated for this room as well. And let’s not forget that Pub37 will also be serving your favorites and can be either a great jumping off point or a perfect destination to say goodbye to 2019.Your Club has lots of options to usher the next decade! Please permit me to remind you of some Holiday schedule adjustments. On Christmas Eve, the Club’s athletic facilities will be open until 3:00 p.m. when all buildings will be secured. No food service will be offered. The Club will reopen at regular times the morning of the 26th. On NewYear’s Day, all athletic facilities will be available regular hours, but no Clubhouse food service will be provided, nor will the Bag Room be open. Please plan your use accordingly. Finally, let me share the appreciation of our entire staff for your generous contributions to the Employee Christmas Gift Fund. Your gift reaches all employee ranks and is truly significant. On their behalf, we thank you and hope that you and your family have a joyous holiday season. If you’re traveling, be safe. If not, I’ll see you at the Club. Phil Iannelli G eneral M anager

BOOK CLUB For December 3rd, we have chosen Kate Quinn’s powerful historical novel The Alice Network which follows two women who are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption. 1947. Charlie St Clair, an American college sophomore, pregnant and unmarried is in England with her very proper mother. She’s on her way to Switzerland. Charlie wants to find her much loved cousin Rose who disappeared in occupied France duringWWII. Charlie thinks this may be her chance to find out what happened to Rose who she loves like a sister. 1915. Eve Gardiner wants to fight against the Germans inWWI. She speaks English, French and German fluently but stutters which is a big problem.Yet, she gets her chance when a captain recruits her to work as a spy in the real-life Alice Network in occupied France and she is trained by Lili, who manages a vast network of spies right under the enemy’s nose. Lili, code named Alice, is the “Queen of the Spies.”

Join us on December 3rd at 4:00pm in the Ladies’ Lounge as Cynthia Woolley leads the discussion of this suspenseful, intriguing novel.

Our January selection, City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert, is a spellbinding novel about love, freedom, and finding what makes you happy. This love story is set in the NewYork City theater world during the 1940’s.

A MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL SHANK

December 1st marks the final day of the South Course for the 2019 season. What a wonderful season it was! The golf courses were terrific, we had great participation in our junior programs, new women’s events and men’s tournaments, we moved digital with our first year of online tournament sign-ups, and our new Golf Simulator Indoor Studio. However, the cold weather does not mean that we are finished yet. Winter months are the very best time to get involved with golf instruction and see dividends by the spring. Individual instruction is always available in our covered outdoor hitting bays, and now in our Golf Simulator. If you have not yet received an orientation on our new Golf Simulator Indoor Studio stop by the Golf Shop to set up a time.

During the Holiday Season, the Golf Shop is a great spot for all of your holiday shopping needs. Plan on attending our popular Sip & Shop event this week on December 3rd. If you are not able to attend, we will continue to offer discounts on merchandise and golf equipment throughout the month of December. Enjoy the service and convenience of shopping here at the Club.

RECAP

TURKEY SHOOT It was a beautiful November day for our 2nd Annual Turkey Shoot. A full field of 84 golfers took to our 14-hole, par 54 cross-country layout, playing a four-person scramble format. The golf course was constructed using the entire South Course and back nine of the North Course, to create a unique and challenging setup for all players. We saw a lot of great scores posted today, despite the cold weather and difficult conditions. Claiming 1st Place Net was the team of John Dennison, Tom Mester, Randy Taylor, and Tom Evans with an impressive score of 43.2 (-10.8).

In the gross division, the team of Pete Moran,Tim Porter, Scott Porter, and BooWhite took top honors with a great round of 46 (-8). Thank you to everyone that participated in the 2019Turkey Shoot, and congratulations to all of our winners! Please follow this link to view the tournament webpage where you will find full results from the event. WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM TheWorld Handicap System (WHS) is being launched in January 2020 and will provide golfers with a unified and more inclusive handicapping system for the first time. Developed by The R&A and USGA in close coordination with existing handicapping authorities, the WHS will provide all golfers with a consistent measure of playing ability, with handicaps calculated in the same way wherever they are in the world. A key objective of the initiative was to develop a modern system that enabled as many golfers as possible to obtain and maintain a Handicap Index. Golfers will be able to transport their Handicap Index globally and compete or play a casual round with players from other regions on a fair basis. It will also indicate the score a golfer is reasonably capable of achieving the next time they go out to play. Below are some of the key features of the newWHS. We will provide more information in the coming weeks.

We held a committee meeting in mid-November to set dates for major tournaments and special events for the 2020 season. We also proposed a change to the bylaws: Currently, women are not allowed to be members of the 9-hole and 18-hole groups simultaneously. The change will allow any woman golfer who meets the eligibility requirements (18 years of age, 36.0 maximum handicap for 18-holers) and pays the required dues to join both the 9-hole and 18-hole groups. The change to Article II, Section 2 will be posted in the Ladies’ Locker Room and a vote will be taken at the Spring Annual Meeting, which follows the opening round of play in April 2020. During this off-season, we hope everyone will be working on their golf games, either with the new golf simulator at the Club or on a course in a warmer climate. Have a great holiday! WOMEN’S NINE-HOLE GOLFERS

We are extremely excited to announce the opening of a new golf space at the club -- the Golf Simulator Indoor Studio. Located in the Squash Building, this space will allow members to practice their games on our Trackman Launch Monitor, or play golf in a realistic environment indoors. Prior to using the room, each member must take part in a 15-minute orientation on the simulator with a member of the Professional Staff. These orientations should be scheduled during regular golf shop business hours.  Once your orientation is complete, you will have access to the room from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., 7 days a week. Note that due to anticipatedhighdemand, each member may currently reserve two 30-minute slots (consecutive or not) up to 7-days in advance.  You can find all of the rules for the Golf Simulator Indoor Studio RIGHT HERE.  Kindly familiarize yourself with the rules for this space. You may schedule your simulator orientation and all subsequent reservations on the Foretees app. Simply open the app, select the Foretees button (bottom center), and select the Golf Sim/Hitting Bay Reservations.  Please note that reservations for our outdoor hitting bays at the back of the range will now also live in this space on the app.

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS The outcome of last month’s aerification on the South Course transpired very well, achieving our goals for thatch management of our major playing surfaces. In particular, the greens received the necessary amount of disturbance that will pay dividends for conditions next season. As the winter season begins, so do our programs to improve the grounds for 2020. Activities such as relieving soil compaction or decreasing tree root competition from the golf course roughs will be an on-going process. August and September’s dry weather help identify areas in need of relief as seen in the pictures below, (left to right) to the left of 16 South Fairway, and (2) to the rear of 5 South Green. To promote firm ground conditions, we will continue with the fairway drainage program from last year. In addition, we have identified bunker surrounds that will be re-grassed prior to the coming playing season. We have numerous tasks on our docket to achieve in all areas of the Club and hope Mother Nature will cooperate over the next few months.

On behalf of our grounds staff, we wish you and your families a happy and joyous holiday season!

On Friday, December 6th we will hold our annual JuniorTennis Jingle Ball Party andTeen Event. Each year we play tennis games for prizes and also ask that each junior participant bring a new toy or gift to be donated to the AI DuPont Children’s Hospital. Food and drinks will be served and all the juniors are guaranteed to have a great time. Our teen group will have a separate event run at the same time. On Saturday, December 7th at 6:45pm will have a pickleball social with play and a few tips from our pros. Pickleball is a fast growing sport and we will be offering several learn and play pickleball clinics to get you started. Limited space is available on December 7th so sign up early. The sun slowly slithers out from behind the bleak, cold winter clouds, illuminating the morning sky with brilliant shades of orange, ushering in a vibrant new day.Your alarm reacts to its orders and belts out a screeching wakeup call pulling you from your dreams…..For a few brief seconds, as you enjoy the warmth and security of your blankets, you get to ponder the first most appealing question of the day, continue to sleep with your dreams/goals or wake up and chase them? I’m not going to lie, there are some goals/dreams that you’re better off sleeping with (my starring role in the next Indiana Jones movie being one of them). Other goals/dreams are very much within our reach if only we took the time to make ourselves chase them.  There’s a quote that I love which says,“If it’s important to you, you will find a way, if not you’ll find an excuse.”And this time of year, more than any other time, is filled with excuses:Too hot, too cold, too long, too short, too hard, too boring, too windy, too wet, too many errands to run, too much family in town, take your pick. There’s a slew of excuses that come out during the holiday season that manifest themselves as monstrous mountains to scale.Well it’s time to set the record straight and see those mountains for the mole hills they really are. Speaking strictly from a fitness perspective (although you can easily apply some of what I’m going to say to other facets of your life) I’m going to share a few thoughts on how to overcome some universal excuses to stay motivated over the holiday season. “This time of year I just don’t have time to workout” A one hour workout is only 4% of your day. I shouldn’t need to say any more than that! “But please Chris, we need to hear more!” Ok, very well, since you asked nicely. The idea that there’s not enough time in the day to workout is perhaps the king or queen of excuses and by the same token is the easiest to pick apart….remember the quote I gave you about three paragraphs ago?Yeah, let’s apply that now shall we? It doesn’t matter if you have one job, two jobs or a gaggle of jobs. The likelihood is you’re not at work twenty four hours a day. Nor are you running errands for the entire day, or taking care of your kids, or watching the entire six seasons of Game of Thrones (although A. That would take literally all day and B. I might actually join you!).The point is, there are windows of opportunity throughout the day that you can get a workout in. It’s called time management. Half an hour, an hour, forty five minutes, twenty minutes. Something can always be done. It’s a matter of prioritizing its importance. If being strong, healthy, vibrant isn’t important to you then I’m sure you’ll be able to fill your day up with alternative endeavors. “I travel too much over the holiday season” First and foremost, lucky you! Where’s my invite? The idea that workouts or fitness in general is tied to a specific location is a ridiculous notion. The beauty of working out is that it literally can be done anywhere. The problem for most people is not a question of location but a question of comfort zone. I get it, while you’re out gallivanting around the country, you’re not going to be able to attend 7:15AMTRX class (which might be the best hour on the planet) or 6:15PM Yoga Foundations. But guess what? That’s ok! The beautiful thing about today’s world is that you have information literally at your fingertips. So no matter where you are you have access to knowledge about an abundance of other fantastic activities. Step outside your comfort zone and sign up for a something that’s not offered at home, “A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there.” My advice while you’re travelling, try something different. And if the notion of new is just way too overwhelming to you then there’s always, the hotel gym, day passes to local gyms and the good ole outdoors (for running, biking, hiking, rowing, skiing).Travel is not an excuse it should be seen as an opportunity. “I have too much family in town over the holidays” Let’s be honest…..you’re really clutching at straws if this is your excuse. I mean, it’s not like you didn’t know they were coming, right? Uncle Fred and Aunt Betty didn’t randomly turn up on your doorstep with their cats and dogs. It really boils down to managing expectations. Prepare for your families arrival. Give them a heads up that mornings from 7-8AM is your time and that’ll you be back for breakfast. Or better yet have them join you. Here at the Club all family and friends are welcome, we even encourage you to bring them to your favorite class (Just ask about our guest policy). Not sure what class to take? Our full class schedule along with their descriptions can be found on the Wilmington Country Club website. Motivation isn’t an inherent skill, you’re not born with a desire to go out a tackle tasks. It takes practice, persistence, perseverance and above all else it takes having a goal that’s important to you.

MASSAGE Tracy, Susan, Vicki, and Ryan have set aside available hours each week but request at least twenty-four hours advance notice, as they are not onsite staff. Some time slots are already filled; other hours may be available.
