Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center - Digital Brochure

Caring for FAMILIES who care in California's Gold Country

I love the quote from Steve Jobs, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do,” and I love working for Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center! A career in the non-profit sector is a labor of love. It feels like your heart and soul are part of the organization. Our mission—to improve the well-being of family caregivers—matters to so many in our community, and it is an honor to be of service. Family caregivers often feel invisible, because so much attention is on the person they are caring for. Our mission allows us to focus on those who have dedicated their lives to caring for a loved one.

Michelle Nevins Executive Director

Family caregivers—who may be relatives, friends, or neighbors—are some of the most selfless individuals. They sacrifice their own needs and may even compromise their own health and well-being to provide care.

At Del Oro, we consider each story unique and come alongside caregivers to offer support and services along the way. In the midst of this process, they often become more confident and empowered in their role and can sustainably carry out their caregiving responsibilities without burnout. I am a native of California and have lived the majority of my life in the Sacramento region. Over the last 30 years, I have worked in the field of aging and long-term services/support. I have worked in skilled nursing, assisted living and the acute care hospital environment. I joined Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center in 1999 and have been through many periods of change and growth during my tenure. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve our clients alongside a talented team of dedicated employees, Board Members and volunteers, all of whom support our mission. Michelle Nevins

Our Mission

Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center is an independent, private, non-profit program funded by the Department of Health Care Services, Area 4 Agency on Aging, grants and private contributions. Del Oro offers a host of free services to unpaid family caregivers in Northern California’s Gold Country counties -- Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Colusa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Sierra, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba.

Del Oro's mission is to improve the well-being of family caregivers and provide support throughout the care giving process.

Our Values As an organization, Del Oro operates based on a set of core values, which we

apply in our relationships with colleagues and with clients.

Del Oro offers a host of FREE SERVICES TO UNPAID

in Northern California’s Gold Country counties: FAMILY CAREGIVERS

Alpine Amador Calaveras Colusa El Dorado Nevada Placer

Sacramento San Joaquin

Sierra Sutter Yolo Yuba

Del Oro provides a suite of essential services to help unpaid family caregivers manage their caregiving responsibilities while mitigating burnout and maintaining their own health.

All services provided by Del Oro come at no cost to the family caregiver. To meet eligibility for some of our services, a client must reside within our thirteen-county territory AND:

Care for an adult with a cognitive impairing condition that occurred after the age of 18 (i.e., Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease) OR Care for someone 60 years of age and over regardless of diagnosis who requires assistance with two or more activities of daily living, residing in Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties.

Del Oro provides information on chronic and disabling conditions and diseases, aging, caregiving issues and community resources. Additionally, as your local CRC, Del Oro also provides referrals to regional agencies and organizations that can provide services relevant to a client’s specific care plan.

Support Groups

Del Oro offers several in-house support groups run by staff. Additionally, we maintain listings of support groups organized by county on our website, which anyone can access.

Support groups are often an important aspect of a care plan with both caregiver and care receiver in mind. Caregivers can benefit from sharing their stories with peers and learning new strategies to deal with challenges they may face during the journey.

Del Oro provides education and training on a variety of issues related to caregiving. We cover practical, hands-on training in subjects related to research, disease specific information, stress reduction, self-care, and other relevant caregiving issues.

Family Consultation throughout this journey. Our family consultants are specialists who assess an individual caregiver’s needs, develop a customized care plan, connect the client to critical resources-including services such as respite, legal advice, and counseling- and offer ongoing emotional support. The purpose of family consultation is to bolster the caregiver’s support system and make caregiving more sustainable.

Del Oro staff work with family caregivers to explore different options that ensure their well-being and prevent burnout. The professionals on our team help identify existing and potential resources to assist family caregivers in providing the best care while maintaining their own health

We cover the cost of respite, which is designed to provide short-term relief to caregivers. This service may be provided at home or in an out-of-home setting, such as an adult day care center or assisted living facility. Del Oro contracts with select, professional agencies and facilities and works with caregivers to choose the best respite option.

Counseling Services

know that they can take a toll on a caregiver’s mental health. Del Oro offers clients up to six (6) one-hour individual counseling sessions for the purpose of getting emotional support and developing new skills and strategies to better cope with their caregiving situation.

When we encourage caregivers to engage in self-care, we prioritize mental health. Many caregivers are facing complex emotions and challenging circumstances that can be difficult and isolating, and we

Del Oro connects caregivers to elder law and estate planning attorneys and covers the cost of one (2)-hour consultation to address various legal and financial issues related to caregiving, including eligibility for public assistance programs (such as Medi-Cal), understanding Advance Healthcare Directives and Powers of Attorney, and gathering and updating legal documents related to estate plans.
