TV SHOWS WE ARE BINGING:

TV and streaming services are providing some much-needed escapism right now. With some of us still being stuck at home, we decided to let you know what we’ve been watching and what we consider to be the best TV shows and movies of 2020, so far. Happy watching!

“Dead to Me” Synopsis: This is the story of Judy Hale, a woman who’s trying to atone for the hit-and-run death of a man she didn’t know. In an effort to make amends for this tragic accident, she befriends the man’s widow, Jen Harding. “McMillions” Synopsis: The story is about an ex-cop security auditor who rigged McDonald’s Monopoly game promotion for a decade. “Tiger King” Synopsis: “Tiger King” is a seven-episode true crime docu-series centered on "Joe Exotic," an infamous collector of giant cats such as tigers and lions that he kept at a "zoo" in Oklahoma. His other wildcat-related money-making ventures included using tiger cubs as props in magic shows and selling animal-themed merchandise. “Tales from the Loop” Synopsis: Each episode of “Tales From the Loop” tells its own hourlong story, focusing on one citizen from the small town of Mersa, Ohio, and each entry shares key elements, like their setting and the Loop itself — a machine built under the town to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe. “After Life” Synopsis: After Tony's wife dies unexpectedly, his nice-guy persona is altered into an impulsive, devil-may-care attitude, taking his old world by storm. “Little Fires Everywhere” Synopsis: Based on Celeste Ng's 2017 bestseller, “Little Fires Everywhere” follows the intertwined fates of the picture-perfect Richardson family and an enigmatic mother and daughter who upend their lives. “Breeders” Synopsis: This is an uncompromising comedy that explores the lives of Paul (Martin Freeman) and Ally (Daisy Haggard) as they juggle full-time careers, aging parents, a mortgage and the unenviable curveballs of parenting their young children.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

CHANGES IN THE SCHOOL DAY ARE ANTICIPATED

The first day of school is right around the corner. For Orange and Seminole counties, the first day of the school year is Aug. 10!

SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE ROAD 3 ACTIVITIES TO KEEP YOUR KIDS BUSY IN THE CAR

As of June 11, public schools are scheduled to reopen at full capacity for the traditional school year. The Orange County Public Schools 2020–21 school year survey results showed that 37% of parents and 33% of school employees want children to return to school as long as there are safety measures in place. What are those safety measures? The schools are continuing to work on developing risk mitigation strategies for their reopening, which could include redesigning the school day to reduce risks. The Florida Department of Education has suggested the following:

Your family might not be taking many road trips this summer, but keeping your kiddos occupied even on short trips in the car can sometimes feel impossible. Few vehicles have built-in entertainment systems, and truth be told, using a smartphone or iPad to address your kids’ boredom and antics might not be the best option, especially if you’re trying to cut down on their screen time. Fortunately, some of the activities that keep kids occupied on long road trips also work for quick trips around town. Before you reach for the nearest screen to keep your kids from picking on one another or finding unsafe ways of entertaining themselves, try some of these constructive car activities.

• Explore allowing students to eat meals in traditional classroom space or outdoors

• Maximize distance between desks as much as possible

• Where feasible, convert cafeterias, libraries, gymnasiums, auditoriums, and/or outdoor areas into classroom spaces

ROAD TRIP BINGO

• At a minimum, schools should be supportive of students, teachers, and staff who voluntarily wear cloth face coverings

This is a tried-and-true, classic car game that still entertains kids today. You can easily make your own bingo boards with squares to mark off for road signs, construction vehicles, and other roadside sights. Plus, this activity helps kids hone their observation skills. Having some treats ready as a prize for the first kid to get a bingo will ensure everyone wants to play along!

• Consider having hand hygiene stations set up at or near school entrances and exits

• Consider staggering arrival and drop-off times to limit direct contact

DRY-ERASE ART

• Clean and disinfect surfaces using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines

Having art supplies in the car might keep your kids busy, but it can also mean dozens of crayons and colored pencils getting lost between the seat cushions. Instead, keep dry-erase boards and markers on hand for a safe art project without the clutter and mess. Plus, old plastic CD cases work as dry-erase boards!

• Educate everyone on the premises (staff and children) about when they should stay home

• Teach and reinforce hand-washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

TOY AND BOOK BOX

Consider the use of cloth face coverings

When the games and art projects don’t work, a box of picture books, toy cars, dolls, and other toys might prove to be the best defense against your kids’ boredom. While this fix might seem too easy, sometimes the simplest ideas work the best. Instead of having your kids play the quiet game the next time they’re acting up in the back, try some of these ideas to keep them entertained so you can keep your eyes safely on the road.

Additionally, the Florida Department of Education has encouraged all medically vulnerable students, staff, and those who live with medically vulnerable individuals to consult with their family doctor and develop a plan for their safe participation in face-to-face school settings. TIMESHARING DURING COVID-19

from the other parent, even during this uncertain time. The order requires that summer timesharing begin immediately. It also provides that “each parent is prohibited from unreasonably restricting access of the child(ren) to the other parent.” The order also provides a location for exchanges to take place in the event that parents are unable to agree. If parents cannot agree, then the exchange shall take place at the police station or sheriff’s office located closest to the school or day care of the child. With the state of Florida starting to reopen, timesharing issues are beginning to resolve. However, it is important to note that the courts in Orange and Osceola counties are still limiting hearings to emergency cases only. On March 25, 2020, there was an amendment to the temporary order regarding parenting in domestic relations cases in Orange and Osceola counties. Although the order provided a lot of necessary clarification for parents during this time, over the past few months, we have received numerous phone calls and inquiries about whether timesharing was required during COVID-19. Parents were justifiably concerned about if they had to continue timesharing and potentially expose their child(ren) to COVID-19. The answer for Orange and Osceola counties, based on the March 25, 2020, administrative order, is “yes.” Timesharing is required and parents are expected to follow all timesharing orders and parenting plans.

1. In a small bowl, combine salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and garlic. 2. Brush vegetables with olive oil and place in a large bowl. Top with lemon juice and seasoning mixture. Toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes but no longer than 2 hours. 3. Prepare the grill at medium-high heat. 4. Grill vegetables in batches, cooking 3–5 minutes on each side until browned

INTEGRATING MEDICINE AND SPORTS THE FIRST MRI SCAN OF A HUMAN

by Dr. Raymond Damadian. Although it took five hours to produce that first image of the patient, the machine successfully scanned his chest and revealed his lungs and heart. Damadian named the machine Indomitable, an homage to his team’s struggle in developing the technology that allowed the device to succeed. Thanks to Damadian’s determination and the brilliant people on his team, today’s medical professionals can use MRI machines to scan broken bones, detect cancerous cells, take full photos of the brain, and reveal blood clots. MRI scans are useful for athletes and nonathletes alike. The results inform a diagnostic plan that will help them get back to playing the sport they love, whether it be their career or a hobby.

A sports injury is severely damaging because it can potentially end the athlete’s career or alter their quality of life. Injured players hope to get a diagnosis and treatment from the medical professionals around them and get back in the game as soon as possible. MRI technology is an essential part of that process. An MRI scan is used to produce an accurate diagnosis of the player’s injury, but that’s not all. It can also assist doctors in estimating recovery time and determining if the player will need surgery. With so much depending on the MRI scan, it’s no wonder that fans, coaches, teammates, and injured players themselves wait anxiously for the results. Though it’s now standard practice to use MRI scans to help diagnose sports injuries, the MRI device itself is less than 50 years old. On July 3, 1977, the first recorded MRI scan of a human body was performed

Whether it’s football, hockey, rugby, or any other contact sport, when a player goes down, fans immediately want to know why. An injury could mean a player is out for the season, which could also cause the entire team to falter. Concerned fans will wait for hours to hear the player’s prognosis.
